Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, is a controversial topic that has come up in conversation and debate since it first appeared in grocery shelves as new tomatoes back in 1994 (Woolsey). GMOs have had an infamous reputation among the public since they first started being offered in the markets and continues with much controversy to this day. Up to 80% of processed foods in the U.S. are genetically modified (Paturel). Most people which one might come across will often debate against GMOs and why the practice should be ignored and instead how one should focus on organic foods as an alternative due to it being healthier and safer on the body. Are GMOs dangerous to the body? Do they pose a general risk to our health? Are the rumors about GMOs as true as people claim they are? Or is the fear behind GMOs overly exaggerated? On the other hand, there are arguments and debates on why the research of GMOs are important for the future as well as being quite safe. There are, of course, disadvantages to using GMO which up to now has only been proven to be quite minor in nature, but at the same time there are many benefits that comes with it as well. Most people will tell you how GMOs are bad and is not needed. But instead of taking that path, I will instead focus on why genetically modified organisms, although controversial, is needed in the world and why it is

Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Over the past few decades a new controversy has arisen in the scientific community: should Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) be used in modern society. There are generally two sides to this debate: one being in favor of GMO use and the other against it. Pro GMO activists believe that GMOs can help address hunger issues and help reduce use of pesticides/insecticides while Anti-GMO activists state that it is a threat to the agriculture industry, and should be banned. Both sides have several valid points, however GMO’s are even more complicated from initial glance, and may not be as dangerous as some believe.
Many will argue that Genetically Modified Organisms(GMOs) are not safe for human consumption, however they are almost inevitable for our everyday food consumption. Some argue that the recent increase in gluten intolerance is caused by GMO foods (Argument against). Other state that the risk to humans by GMO’s is relatively small (The GMO”). The bottom line is what people put into their bodies is a personal choice and a person should be able to easily tell if a product has been genetically modified or not.
Dr. Praphul Joshi 10/23/2013 Controversial Public Health Issue There are several controversial issues confronting us today; from Universal Healthcare (Obama Care) to Stem Cell research, to vaccinations, to genetically engineered (GE)/genetically modified (GM) foods. However, I shall look at genetically modified foods as the controversial issue for this article. I shall look at an article from the mass media about this controversial public health issue and place emphasis on the message the document wants to convey and address any biases that may be within. In addition, I shall provide additional data or facts from another article to see if it supports or refutes the controversial message. It is my intention that this article will provide some clarity on genetically modified foods confronting us in the United States and the world over. When it comes to the topic of whether Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO) are safe or not, most of us will readily agree that it has become an issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of is it really safe to consume them. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are safe and improve the production of crops, others maintain that GMOs are not safe and should be eradicated. I disagree that GMOs are safe for human consumption because as a recent research has shown they can cause severe organ damage and fatal diseases. GMOs should be banned and remove from all food sources until they are proved safe for consumption.
In this article, Tamara Thompson asks common questions regarding genetically modified organisms otherwise known as GMOs. She gives a decent definition of GMOs as plant seeds that are modified to resist certain insects as well as harsh weather conditions. It is a very biased article, drawing attention to the company, Monsanto, in particular. She repeatedly assures her readers that GMOs are safe and that Monsanto currently works to the standards of organizations, such as the Food and Drug Administrations (FDA), Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). She concludes with the benefits of GMOs nutritional value and how they contribute to reducing draws on natural resources such as fossil fuels. This article was beneficial, although biased it gave insight to what companies such as Monsanto want the public to believe. When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves.

Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) are created by moving a gene from one animal to another. An example of this would be moving the gene of an Icefish to a tomato to give the tomato a longer shelf life. GMOs were intended to help increase food production and help foods last longer however, GMOs have become very controversial because of their potential health and environmental effects. Tomatoes for example, would normally go bad after a few days, however after being manipulated the tomatoes now have a longer shelf life. Common sense seems to dictate that as humans, we shouldn’t be eating harmful chemicals. Lately, regardless of where anyone looks whether at their local market or in their local grocery store, there is someone selling Genetically Modified Organisms/Genetically Engineered (GMO/GE) foods. GMO’s/GE’s can come in a range of different varieties from fresh vegetables and fruits to various medications or even flowers. Numerous individuals do not think twice about what they buy, but as the trend of GMO’s/GE’s continue, these individuals might have to think twice about the effects.
