From an early age, I acquired a keen interest in geography. AN example of my love of the subject is when I visit Wales many times a year, every time becoming overwhelmed with the pure beauty of the landscape along with the physical and human processes that have interacted to make it the place it is presently. During my school years I studied geography, building up a foundation of knowledge. Along with this, my personal experiences with the natural world like hiking up dolgoch falls and visiting the centre of alternative technology (CAT) in Wales has given me a more insightful understanding of geography, engaging me with the desire and determination to learn more.
At The Streetly Academy I am studying Geography, Maths (Statistics) and Information Technology for my A Levels. A combination of these topics has given me an analytic approach to problem solving, and a

I am thrilled by our planet and what it has to offer so in doing hiking I get so see what our world has to offer. When I go camping it spurs on my interest with the world being able to see the world out in the country rather than being in the city isolated from the natural world. These interests in the outdoors spur my interest in geography. When I go to university I am keen to join a hiking club to gain the social aspect of hiking with fellow students and the chance to see stunning landscapes the UK has to offer.
I believe I am a credible candidate for a geography course, there has never been a day when geography has not interested me catching my attention, filling me with enthusiasm to learn more. The skills I wish to gain out of the course include transferable skills like communication, teamwork. report writing and essay writing. In doing the geography course I want to gain skills in the physical aspect and knowledge in the human aspect so in doing a geography course I will be set up with skills for my future aspirations in the field of
Chapter one in the book, Human Geography, gives a timeline of the changes that have occurred since the creation of planet Earth. The author, John Rennie Short, explained how truly powerful the earth itself is. It has the ability to wipe out humanity. We often blame nature when natural disasters happen, but perhaps the human race may have something to do with the cause of environmental hazards like volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
The Five Themes of Geography are: Location – Absolute points on a map or grid or Relative to where something may be; Place – The physical and/or human characteristics of a locations; Human/Environment Interactions – How humans have impacted the landscape or environment; Relationship between places Movement – How humans interact on the earth (i.e. how they communicate over distance (short or long)) and Regions – a unit of space that has commonalities defined by physical, human and environmental geography. The Explorers of the New World may have not known what the Five Themes of Geography were but they quickly learned. Of the five themes the ones that they all took advantage of was the physical Location and Place as they learned to navigate
Cronulla is a beachside suburb in southern Sydney, it is located 34.0574° S, 151.1522° E which is 26 kilometres south of the Sydney CBD (see figure 2). It is governed by the Sutherland Shire Council. Cronulla’s coastal environment is on the Kurnell Peninsula, which is made up of a tombolo. A tombolo is a sand spit connecting a rocky outcrop or island to the mainland. So this forms a barrier between Botany Bay and Bate Bay. The two areas of study visited were Wanda Beach and the Greenhills Beach development.
C.A country likely constitutes a formal political region because within its boundaries certain conditions of nationality, law, and political tradition prevail.
In turn, this allows the visitors to experience the natural beauty, charm, and spiritual significance of the “true world” in almost the exact same light as even the earliest of environmental philosophers, such as Henry David Thoreau. Being exposed and actually walking through these lands allows people to go beyond their desktop screensaver aesthetic admiration for the natural world and really connect to and feel in their own individual way the majestic powers of the wild. One example, among many, of these powers would be the opportunity for extreme solitude, time for personal reflection, and an outlet for escape. The benefits of such introspection could entail an increased sense of vitality, self reliance, confidence and moral strength. “New Englander Joseph Knowles proposed setting aside ‘wild lands’ and establishing outdoor communities where Americans could retreat from the ‘commercialism and the mad desire to make money that have blotted out everything else leaving us not living, but merely existing.”’ There are no advertisements trying to persuade one to buy this, or upgrade to this new form of “must have” technology in the wilderness. There is no boss or professor demanding work or assignments, there is just pure bliss. When people get out and really smell the pollutant free fresh
The mystery and beauty of nature are some of the greatest phenomenons to ever exist. There are no limits to what you may discover and witness while outside and exploring. The advancement of technology has strayed today's youth far away from nature and the outdoors. Today’s prototype of success has caused people to move away from nature and instead follow laid out paths that will ensure a large income. Many brave and courageous people, such as Chris McCandless, have abandoned society and began their own pursuit of happiness. But what about nature and the wilderness is it that draws so many people to it?
A psammosere is a serial community; an ecological succession that began life on newly exposed coastal sand. Most common psammoseres are sand dune systems.
Much of my passion for Geography is derived from the fact that it depicts relevance to all aspects of society. It is dynamic in a sense that my perception and understanding is constantly evolving with the growth in understanding and perception. What intrigues my further pursuit of geography is how Geography unlike other subjects has direct links to both human and physical attributes. By further pursuing geography at a higher education level, I wish to enrich my understanding of the wider significance of issues being faced and how it affects society on a local and global level. It is important to identify and understand the interconnecting aspects of the world around us and apply such knowledge towards a more sustainable future. Geography
While discussing Henry David Thoreau's Walden and Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac, we attempted to address an important challenge -- Is the close observation and description of nature merely an idle thing for people in today's world? It could be suggested that nature writing and the close enjoyment of natural environments is merely "recreational" and not intellectually, economically, or politically worthy of our efforts. Perhaps this activity has "spiritual value" or gives us a "sense of peace." But does it really have anything to do with the way we live in the world today? It seems to me that this question is central to the whole course of study and that we
John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, is well known as one of the nation’s greatest environmentalists and conservationists. Muir spent many years of his life wandering around in the hills of Northern California, experiencing a phenomenon that can only be described as wanderlust. The term wanderlust describes an innate feeling or desire to travel. Just a few short weeks ago, I packed my bag and hopped on a plane bound for Spain, in an attempt to rekindle my own wanderlust. Growing up, I was extremely lucky to have a family that believed in traveling all over the country
In Burgesses model, the central town is surrounded by poor housing. The housing is low quality but there is short commuting time. The further one is away from the central business district, the better quality the housing becomes but the longer commuting time. This transition from low quality housing to longer commuting time occurs in the zone of transition. When people move further away from the center, they can afford both the better housing and the longer commuting. In this model, relative location effected both the housing and transportation
Women only make up a small percentage of law enforcement individuals. While this is such a minute number, it may come with a valid reason. While this is not applicable to every woman, a handful may find themselves as the target of issues such as tokenism, the belief that they have obtained the prestigious title of law enforcement officer or obtaining a promotion in order to provide the force with a diverse element and have not earned their title, and prejudice for their gender. However, Kathy says to her this is not a reasonable application to what goes on in her personal work life. Kathy says that our physical geography has a heavy influence in regards to the treatment that she receives as an officer, stating that “The comments I receive
If I was interested in pursuing a career in geography I feel I would be most drawn to Human geography in the specific field of cultural geographer. A cultural geographer’s job is study culture in relation to geography. They examine attributes such as language, ethnicity and religion and how they relate to the location. The degree and education requirements span from a bachelors to a Ph.D. depending on who you want to work for. Most government workers only need a bachelor’s degree, however if you plan on working for a private organization you may need experience and a Masters degree in Geography or in geographic information systems. The amount a cultural geographer in Colorado makes per year ranges from 49,480 to 101,410 z year depending on
I became interested in Geosciences when I was very young, starting with dinosaurs and other ancient life like many other kids, however unlike other kids, I never grew out of dinosaurs. Instead, my interests grew and I started picking up rocks and creating my own digs then getting handbooks for identification. From the first quartz I found in my driveway, to the Apatosaurus vertebrae I helped excavate last summer, I have been hooked on the ancient world. I remain amazed by the immenseness of time on Earth’s scale, and on a universal scale, where all of human existence is barely a blink. That this idea, can be viewed in calcified bones, or in strata of rock, stays endlessly fascinating. My interests have led me to many opportunities in my
Geography is field of study that has come a long way in history. It not as old as some of the other studies that were developed so many years ago but it has certain grown into professionalized discipline. Geography was very general in the beginning but as it grew disciplines then became available at the University of Berlin. All this and much more has contributed to becoming the recognized profession it is today. There were several figures and there careers that really helped get geography professionalized. This included Paul Vidal de la Blache (Vidal), William Morris Davis, Halford Mackinder and Friedrich Ratzel. They have had big contributions to geography
