In “Shooting an Elephant”, Orwell, being a police officer, is going through some tough times. The reason being was because many of the people in the area, in which he resided, hated Europeans. In the story, Orwell is told that an elephant has gone on a rampage and is asked to deal with the situation. The elephant’s rampage had come to an end and it was peacefully eating grass “He took not the slightest notice of the crowd’s approach. He was tearing up bunches of grass, beating them against his knees to clean them and stuffing them into his mouth” (George Orwell, 142). He was one of the very few who know about the root that can help to prevent the loss of vision from tree snake venom. When he heals Teddy Farquar with this root, many people pressure him into leading them to the root. They want the root to be used across, to heal many people. He seemingly gives in and leads them to the wrong plant to keep his dignity. “And suddenly he appeared to give in. He lifted his head, gave a long, blank angry look at the circle of whites, who seemed to him like a circle of yelping dogs pressing around him, and said: ‘I will show you the root.’” (Doris Lessing, 154) Gideon does not plan on sharing knowledge of the root. While Orwell gives into the peer pressure, and shoots the elephant, Gideon does the exact opposite, he rebels against the people’s will and refuses to give up his knowledge of the root. The root was a part of his people and he did not want white people to take it
