Towards the end of Orwell’s novel that presents a dystopian society, the antagonist, O’Brien, a close member of the inner party, warns Winston, the protagonist and one of only two reasonable people left, that “We do not merely destroy our enemies; we change them” (319). Winston, who has been taken prisoner for his political dissent, receives this grave warning tied down to a chair with O’Brien’s face staring at him from above. This alarming solution to the infamous mystery frightens Winston a significant amount, who after sacrificing so much, has just learned his fate. Orwell has brought about this fate to emphasize the perpetual triumph of the party over its enemies. “1984” is an imaginary novel wrote by George Orwell in 1949. The novel takes place in a fictional country called Oceania. In 1984, the society is a mess in the control of the “big brother”, people are leveled by three three classes: the upper class party, the middle outer class party, and the lower class proles. But the lower class make up 85 per cent of the people in Oceania. Winston is a outer class party member working for the “big brother”. This novel uses Winston as an example to show how the “big brother” takes the control by mind, manipulation and technology.

           In George Orwell’s 1984, the Party’s slogan “Ignorance is strength” is the foundation of the security of Oceania’s society. The proles’ ignorance to repression increases the strength of the Party and Big Brother, allowing them to have complete control and diminish humanity.  The most gifted citizens are assassinated, whereas the less intelligent, perish.  In Oceania, the non-ignorant  and independent citizens who risk their lives and chose to rebel, are the weak and therefor collapse.

George Orwell’s 1984 is a prime example of a deep dystopia with a totalitarian government. Totalitarian governments have full and total control. The Inner Party, which is the main form of government in Oceania, has total control over its people’s thoughts and actions. They use many forms of abuse in order to control them. The Inner Party controls the government and is the upper class. The middle class is called the Outer Party. These people are given jobs from the government and are more educated than the Proles, which make up the lower class. The Outer Party is in charge of executing the Inner Party’s policies, but they have no say in them. The government uses many forms of manipulation to control their people. The members of Oceania’s society do not misbehave out of fear of punishment. People who betray the government vanish. They disappear and there is no evidence that they even existed. The government also uses the threat of abuse to keep its people in line. People of Oceania know they can be tortured or killed for even the slightest misdemeanor. The middle class is led to believe that they are living a high quality life through a method of false prosperity. The government fools people by changing history so the only form of truth the people think they have is their own memory. Throughout the countless eons of human civilization, the desire for ultimate power and control over resources, people, and/or general geographical areas is very prevalent. This authoritarian mindset resonates with the high class of past peoples and that of the three countries in 1984 by George Orwell. The Party preserves itself by the ultimate interventional espionage of one’s own people and criminalized animalistic instincts. The Party also isolates the people from those of the other two countries as to prevent dissidence amongst the poles. Naturally, this suppression of deep-rooted characteristics proves to spawn a variety of incidents for the Party and the people.

Henceforth, through advancements in technology has the ability to monitor all activities of people. The elimination of privacy “demands obedience and devotion of Oceania's citizens” since anything done against the Party will lead to fatal consequences (“1984” 5). Furthermore, Ministry of Truth renders the denizens at the mercy of the Party when the truth is out of their grasp. According to Orwell, “who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past” (34). The Party keeps the denizens in constant hatred and anger to the enemies of Oceania or constant feeling of triumph. With this in mind, it is significant to the motive of the daily Two Minute Hate and labeling everything with victory before it. As a result, Big Brother manipulates society which results in control over language.
