George Orwell's 'The Hunger Games'

Dystopian films and books have become popular over the past few years. These tend to reflect the way in which society could possibly soon turn if expecting extremes. Dystopian literature and media also tend to have utopian elements as well. While the societies in these works are strict and controlling, they do offer something that our society could possibly benefit from. Divergent has this element. The population is broken up into five factions that represent the different types of people in society and separate those who would fight easily due to their personal morals. The Hunger Games on the other hand (when modern society crumbled) they punished their citizens for fighting the government. While yes there was a chance for riches in the Hunger Games, it took risking your life to get it. In addition, if one did win the Hunger Games they would have an extremely easy life due to riches and a free luxury house. Divergent does not have this part, as its utopian aspect is the fact different ideals are separated from each other. Utopian literature is a reflection that is a perceived direction society may go. In these stories, mirrors are a device used to symbolically state the universe of the film is a reflection not a reality.

Until page 50 it was a perfect beginning , and I had a good time in reading this pages and a lot of something to learn and something make me feel interest, such as, the deep description of the characters, places, and even food which made me feel the moment and as if I were living with them. Also, the way that the author had depicted how people suffered because of the hanger and poverty. Therefore, he used very precise descriptions of situations and words to provide the reader a clear understanding of the entity he is criticizing. In the history of cinema, most movies involving a hero 's journey involve mostly the same plot; man gets a call, goes on a journey, gets in a battle or two, and saves the helpless woman from some evil source. The Hunger Games has the same plot as other hero films, but takes a complete turn on the actor encompassing the hero. The hero in this film is a Katniss Everdeen, a poor girl from a dystopian society. In this film Katniss volunteers for her sister to be in the Hunger Games, which is an event where individuals are thrown into an arena where people from twelve districts fight each other to the death for entertainment. Katniss must win the hunger games and make it back to her family. Katniss eventually befriends Peta and they defeat all obstacles and win the Hunger Games together. The Hunger Games is a perfect example of a hero 's journey plot. It follows the steps that any hero journey movie would, including the call, crossing the threshold, a supreme ordeal, companions and mentors, a transformation and the end gift. This film encompasses the classic hero journey plot, with an exception of having a strong female lead instead of male.

Social stratification is a concept used within sociology that explains the divisions and social inequalities of large groups of people within a particular society. The Hunger Games (2012) is a film that demonstrates this through amplifying how the power of the rich members in a polarised society are taking control of the poor and separating them in different districts which create specific social rankings. This essay will use the perspective of conflict theory to examine how Australian society is also effected by social stratification and therefore divided in social classes which effects their access to social equalities.

I found a theme that carried throughout the whole book, Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. This is the story about Katniss Everdeen and how she got drafted to fight twenty-three others in an arena. She must go through many struggles to end up winning, along with her new lover, Peeta. One simple theme, perseverance, runs throughout the whole book. The complex lesson the story suggests is that perseverance, emotional or physical, not only helps one, but helps others and causes them to persevere as well.

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins illustrates a dystopian society where the government tries to apply a perfect society to maintain the power in all of Panem. The author shows an elaborate and horrifying description of a society not so unlike our own and provides a clear warning about the danger of governmental control. The government of Panem has a government which controls everything. The government shows totalitarianism, a post-apocalyptic setting, and the world ranks. These three main points are what shows how the The Hunger Games is a great example of a dystopian literature.

1984 and The Hunger Games are two brilliant novels written by two award winning authors. They contain many characteristics that typical dystopian novels possess; however, they’re presented differently to create the fictitious environments, where both characters live. The Hunger Games demonstrates many examples of oppression in a capitalist society. Collins created a society with a very noticeable difference between the rich, the poor, and the people in charge. The districts with more money often train their tributes from the time they are very small and then they volunteer to become tributes, whereas in the poor districts most people are starving all year round and going to the games is a death sentence. Much like in our world today where the rich have very many opportunities to get ahead and the poor are struggling to keep up. Another demonstration of class difference is how the capitol uses the games to intimidate the people of the districts and let them know that they are in charge.

George Orwell’s “1984” perfectly captures a potential dystopia that would occur to the human race if a totalitarian government was present. As a result of this, Orwell identifies the purpose of the novel: to warn people what could possibly happen if they were not careful. A totalitarian government is similar to a dictatorship and demands complete obedience. Orwell focused on what type of plot would be most beneficial, how the plot would impact the audience, and how the subplot builds on a conflict within the story. By using a progressive plot structure in the novel “1984”, Orwell creates an effective way of telling his story to the reader.

The Hunger Games could be looked at from many different points of views as the characters in the book have many different goals and aspirations. I believe Haymitch draws the line as somewhat as an anti-hero type who works for the greater good of couching the tributes. Looking at revolution and rebellion it’s hard to understand is it just or unjust, in most cases it’s unjust but it can be used as a tool for change. In Haymitche’s eye he prefers to try to conceal or suppress the tributes rebellious side. Revolution and rebellion over the years of humanity has played a key role in some of the greatest forward progress or in turn to suppress another social group. To truly grasp the idea of revolution and rebellion we have to understand what is it and how it affects Haymitch, someone who wants to remain in the middle of everything but also help the tributes.
