George Washington was born on February 22,1732 at Pope Creek, Virginia. Growing up Washington served in the Virginia militia. One of his missions was to send a message to the French in the Ohio Valley territory, but on the trip back home Washington ran into some icey water which almost caused him to lose his life. In 1758 Washington resigned as the head general of the Virginia militia, and he returned home to meet his soon-to-be wife, Martha Custis. Several years later, Washington had grown a 2,000 acre farm to an 8,000 acre farm.
