A hero's place in society has remained relatively consistent since the very beginning of time. Throughout the years, people have seen many different versions of larger-than-life heroes, who have completed seemingly impossible tasks and persevered through immense adversity. The common denominator between all of these heroes has always been that each and every one of these beings has put his/her own life in danger and fought great battles in the pursuit of a better life for mankind as a whole.

To be a hero, someone could save others, respect their country, and care. The firefighters from the Fire Department of New York have all of these characteristics, even thought they aren't perfect. Everyday, they risk their lives to save others. They show their patriotism even on the trucks they drive through the cities. Most of all they don't just do it because it's their job; they do it because they care. Unlike the people at FDNY, Muhammad Ali is violent, separatist, and rude.

Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela, and the passengers of Flight 93 all stood up for a cause and proved how they deserved to be called heroes. They put themselves in situations where their life wasn’t guaranteed protected to ensure the safety of others. Heroes are not always the ones wearing capes flying through the air, but sometimes the ones who are admirable, intelligent, and altruistic enough to make a change in the world.

Not every hero wears a cape or tights, nor do they all have superpowers. Being a hero does not mean you have to be a crime fighter or a warrior. Heroism comes with the good that you do, and helping people and wanting better for people are makes heroes. Heroism can range from big to small; a hero can makes someone’s day, or he or she can even make history. Heroes can be local or worldwide. A hero could even be someone an individual looks up to as a role model. Heroes do not have to be well known by everyone to be a hero. They could just be helping their community. Not every hero is the same, and people may not agree on who is and who is not a hero. Heroes are what an individual makes them to be. Although Beowulf and Malcolm X are people of different time eras, both men demonstrate a variety of characteristics of a hero.

I think some people who fit this description are, to be honest Batman because he is willing to sacrifice himself for others. He wanted to do this because he thought that Gotham needed someone to be there, someone to protect it. A person who actually existed that I think fits the category of a hero is Martin Luther King Jr. He knew something was wrong with the world so he fought to protect the people who were being wronged. My reasoning is that, when someone risks their life for someone else, or when someone takes time out of their day to make sure someone is appropriate and healthy they are being a hero. Heros come in all shapes and sizes, some use powers or brute strength to save lives while others use their intelligence. Stories have been written and movies made about amazing super heros saving lives from evil villains, but there have also been stories written about the everday heros, like the soldiers who fight to keep a country safe from the enemy. While these soldiers might not have superpowers to fight the opposing side they still go in fighting knowing that they may die, but they do so anyway for the ones they love. Everyone wants to be a hero, but to be one you should fit certain criteria and possess specific qualities. First of all they should be a good role model and have a positive influence on others. This is important because good heroes have people who look at up to them and that are inspired by them. Terry Fox inspired people all across Canada to run/walk, the annual Terry Fox run. Second of all a hero should be determined. Having this quality allows you to stand up for what you believe and overcome any obstacle in your way. A hero who is determined won’t give up until he has succeeded. Terry Fox’s determination is what drove him to run 5,373km before his cancer spread to his lungs. Heroes are not always people who lead marches or do things for their country. For example policemen, firefighters, nurses, lifeguards etc. are heroes everyday because they take the time to save lives. When they’re going through a challenge or trying to overcome a conflict they always have courage. These people risk their own life to save someone else’s. To be more specific Dr. Ginger Holt from Dallas had saved a little boy’s leg. She was confident and determined to finding out what went wrong in the boy’s leg and went through many procedures looking at the tests.

Heroes have many goals and many challenges, but whether they are successful or not is a whole different story. Always trying their best to achieve their certain goal and risking to help others is what heroes live for. For example, during the attacks of 9/11, boat drivers such as were rescuing people from the island of Manhattan in New York. There were thousands upon thousands of people, but with enough support, the boat drivers were able to rescue everybody. Vincent Ardolino, one of the boat drivers during the 9/11 boatlift, said in the documentary “Boatlift” that he tells his children to “never go through life saying you should have. If you want to do something, do it.” This mindset is what all heroes should adopt for the future. These people may not have the most difficult job in the world, but they carry out small challenges with a lot of passion. Likewise, were the heroes during Hurricane Harvey and Irma, two very devastating Hurricanes that have costed the USA many lives. Many people from outside of the area have done countless things to help like rescue people with their boats, donate money, and help rebuild. Many of these heroes have risked their lives and struggled on for the greater good.
