PROBLEM:
Obesity has become one of the most critical health problems in our nation today. Our children follow in our footsteps as we lead them to the burden of weight-related chronic diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and several forms of cancer. One of the factors leading to obesity is the lack of physical activity from our daily lives.
For a substantial duration of the day children are stuck sitting in school. After school they are glued to the television, computer, or video game controller. When outside of school, there are limited options for children to be active in their own communities because of safety issues and a lack of parks, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Current mandated gym class requirements in other states allow gym class, recess, and even field trips to count towards the minimum physical activity requirements. This leisure makes it easier on schools to fulfill their minimum requirement and not overburden them. Bi-yearly visits will be arranged by the Pennsylvania Board to oversee schools’ plans to allocate physical activity into the typical school day. This allows the board to decide if the physical activity is aggressive enough and if the school meets minimum requirements. Costs will vary from school to school depending on how resources are utilized for physical activities. Schools may opt to add sports-related activity that may need equipment, while other schools will allocate smaller funds for activities such as group games that do not require much equipment. Just the addition of one ten-dollar kickball to a classroom can be used for several years to perform various physical games that can count towards the minimum requirement. New gym teachers may or may not be hired depending on the school. Current teachers can supply the students with their daily physical activity through games and field trips.

Obesity continues to be a problem in the United States. With obesity rates on the rise something must be done to prevent this massive issue. Seventeen percent of children and adolescents about 12.5 million are obese (Diet). Obesity is the result of a rise in fat that accumulated over time due to the lack of exercise and having a calorie surplus due to unhealthy food. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than 30% is considered to be obese (Obesity). There isn’t a direct focus on obesity, because people don’t think it’s an important issue. To ensure a better future, solution is needed now. The solution to ending the obesity epidemic by encouraging a healthier lifestyle on children at young ages, improving nutrition at schools and restaurants, as well as providing more time and space for citizens to get physically active.

For years, Americans have been told that exercising and staying active is imperative to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In general, this fact holds true for all generations and age groups, including the youth of today. Children simply need to exercise and participate in more physical activities in order to maintain a high level of health. The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools suggests that, “one of the leading causes of this epidemic (childhood obesity) is a marked decline in physical activity and athletic participation” (“Athletics in Schools”). Childhood fascinations with watching television, playing video games, and browsing the internet are just a few of the sedentary hobbies taking over children’s free time to be active. Therefore, mandating physical activities in schools across the country will effectively reduce the frequency of this major, obesity health crisis in young students. Understandably, a plethora of factors cause and influence children to become overweight and obese, but working to fix each evident problem will, in the end, contribute to finally ending the developing childhood health crisis.
Audience Analysis: since most of my audiences are students with a job, I will focus on how exercise can boost your energy, and mental health to get more accomplished in school.
In Alaska, there are villages that do not have gyms that are in good condition and sometimes, it is hard to access. According to Alaska Department of Health & Social Services, 20.9% for all Alaska adolescents and 21.1% for Alaska Native adolescents were engaging in sixty minutes of physical activity every day of the week. The state target is 23.0% and the male adolescents have already exceeded that goal, but beginning in 2011 where the percentage was 28.0%, there seems to be a downward trend because in 2015, there were only 24.7%. Obesity, also known as overweight, is a serious epidemic disease that can cause harm to the systems of the body including the heart. Obesity is the biggest threat to the United State of America 's population and something urgent has to be done, otherwise our future generation is at stake. the parent of U.S kids should be aware that obesity is affecting health, has national consequences, and lead to depression in the victims. If something is not done fast to alter this misfortune, there is a high percentage that our future generation is at stake.
Obesity in the United States has been a serious problem affecting Americans and has been continually growing higher in numbers each year. American obesity has nearly doubled within the last 40 years and is now considered to be an epidemic that is affecting millions of people around the nation. According to the National institute of Diabetes and digestive and kidney Diseases, 31% of men and 35% of women are considered seriously overweight, along with 15% of children between the ages of six and nineteen are also overweight. The lack of physical inactivity and extreme poor dieting are catching up to almost the same threat as cigarettes and tobacco smoking. We as a nation are considered to be the fattest country in the world.
Physical activity supports a child’s overall health and well being. It helps with bodily development (i.e. muscle build up and heart and lung function). It helps tackle childhood obesity, promotes a positive attitude to sport, playing outside and other physical activities in later life.
Today’s generation of children is the most inactive and obese in all of U.S. history (Loonin, 54). Poor exercise habits are developed as early as preschool age (All children above the age of 2 should be getting at least an hour of exercise a day in order to stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight (Overweight and Obesity, 2). Childhood obesity is rapidly becoming an epidemic in America. Children are becoming overweight from lack of exercise and overeating. A average US child eats fast food daily without exercise. More than 15 million US children live in “food insecure” homes which means they have limited access to the foods they need to stay healthy due to the cost of the items according to the Trust for America’s Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Children are consuming much more than they burn off from exercise daily. Due to children eating more than they burn off, they are suffering from different types of diseases. Even First Lady Michelle Obama is supporting an initiative to help children become more active and to provide for exercise (at least 30-60 minutes per day) in all schools. Even limited amounts of exercise can have great health benefits. When humans exercise, the brain produces chemicals that help enhance mood, limit cravings for sugars, and contribute to healthier joints, muscles, the heart, and kidneys. The rate of childhood obesity has grown an enormous amount over the years with more than 40 million children being overweight! That number is astonishingly high and it is very obvious that something needs to be done about this. Studies had shown in 2008 that more than 40 million children were said to be overweight and the sad truth is that they are still increasing rapidly to this day; also every 1 in 4 teenagers is said to not reach the fitness guidelines (Tanner) according to an article by Lindsey Tanner. For this problem to be resolved not only do the parents of children need to make sure their kids are staying active but also, the schools they attend need to make sure they are getting a well-balanced meal and have some type of physical activity during their school day. Each state in America is given a percentage rate on the number of obese people in that particular state. The highest ranking state is Mississippi with a percentage of 34.9 and the state ranking the least is Connecticut with 24.5 percent. Different researches have shown that each day 850 lives are taken due to obesity and each year there are more than 300,000 people that die from obesity related illnesses. These are deaths that most likely could have been avoided if these individuals would have had the proper exercise and diet in their lives.
