PROBLEM:
Obesity has become one of the most critical health problems in our nation today. Our children follow in our footsteps as we lead them to the burden of weight-related chronic diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and several forms of cancer. One of the factors leading to obesity is the lack of physical activity from our daily lives.
For a substantial duration of the day children are stuck sitting in school. After school they are glued to the television, computer, or video game controller. When outside of school, there are limited options for children to be active in their own communities because of safety issues and a lack of parks, sidewalks, and bike lanes. Current mandated gym class requirements in other states allow gym class, recess, and even field trips to count towards the minimum physical activity requirements. This leisure makes it easier on schools to fulfill their minimum requirement and not overburden them. Bi-yearly visits will be arranged by the Pennsylvania Board to oversee schools’ plans to allocate physical activity into the typical school day. This allows the board to decide if the physical activity is aggressive enough and if the school meets minimum requirements. Costs will vary from school to school depending on how resources are utilized for physical activities. Schools may opt to add sports-related activity that may need equipment, while other schools will allocate smaller funds for activities such as group games that do not require much equipment. Just the addition of one ten-dollar kickball to a classroom can be used for several years to perform various physical games that can count towards the minimum requirement. New gym teachers may or may not be hired depending on the school. Current teachers can supply the students with their daily physical activity through games and field trips.

This addition of more physical activity will allow students to prosper in physical, social, and academic ways.
