Get Smart is a film released in 2008, directed by Peter Segal, that stars Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway as the main characters. The plot of the story is that an organization named KAOS has accrued a stockpile of nuclear weapons and is threatening to use them if their demands for money aren't met. CONTROL, the organization know for always messing up KAOS' plans, has just had their headquarters sabotaged and now all of their agents have had their identity compromised, except for one, agent 99. Not having any other options, CONTROL promotes one of their best data analyst to an agent, this man is Maxwell Smart. She expresses her objection to the idea, but she has no choice in the matter. As they travel about in pursuit of their objective they bicker plenty of times. Agent 99 is upset that Max is leading them even though he has less experience than her. This leads to a conflict in which they argue about who is the better agent, in which Max brings up his superior test scores and agent 99 brings up her advanced experience. Often times Max will reveal a gadget that he has obtained from his friends from control, Bruce and Lloyd, and after explaining how it works he will mockingly add a "You don't have one of these? Hmm." After having this done to her a couple of times and getting tired of hearing it, agent 99 gets out her explosive tooth floss, looks at Max, and says in a mocking tone "You don't have one of these? Hmm." Devito explains that interpersonal conflict is an inevitable thing and that it can positive or negative effects (278). Among the negative effects are increased negative feelings, depleted energy, and possible barriers to greater intimacy. The positive effects include solving a problem before it has any chances to grow and avoiding a buildup of hatred towards one's partner. Devito also explains how conflict can be focused on relationship or content issues (279).
