The core reason I started working is to get a good pay for supporting my family’s financial needs. I was born in a middle-class family with a more than a handful people living in my household. Having a big family sometimes can become challenging considering the cost of providing for such a family. In my family, everyone was working except my younger siblings and me. I can recall my parents telling me not to be concerned about the financial status of our family, but rather put all my focus on education. I used to see bills piling up and could only be settled when they were late.
As I got older, the question of what was the cause of the situation at home became frequent. The answer to the question became vivid later after high school. The first job after high school provided a response why my parents were struggling so much. The low minimum wage that is so discouraging. The minimum wage was not sufficient to support the bill for our family despite majority of the family members having the minimum wage. I got worried about many families whose member could not secure a job with a minimum salary. To unfold the truth on the matter, I embarked on a research with the internet that has proved to be my best tool in carrying out research.
The first resource for my study that I encountered is an article ‘Business Agree-It’s Time to Raise the Minimum Wage’ by Ross Eisenbrey. According to a poll, for a Minimum Wage revealed that the majority of the respondents were for the support of the
Ever since I was a young child, my parents always told me to try my best in school, they always told me this for the reason that they never had the opportunity to have a good job because they never finished school. This event is shaping me to care a lot regarding my education. In addition to that, another event that has shaped me to become the person I am today is that since my parents don’t have good paying jobs they have to work hard to take care of me and my siblings this event has caused me to become a hard working person and to seize all opportunities to live a good life because I don’t want to struggle like my parents.
The minimum wage debate has been a hot topic over the past year, especially with the Presidential Election. This is a divisive topic that people rarely agree upon. There are essentially two sides you can take when it comes to this argument. Either people are for minimum wage or are against raising, or even having, a minimum wage. Proponents of the minimum wage are typically politicians who are lobbying for the vote of the people who feel that a minimum wage is critical to their wellbeing, and those who sympathize with people who earn “minimum wage”. Minimum wage is destroying America’s free market economy and someone needs to take action and find a better solution to this problem. Without anyone acting on this problem now, it can potentially be worse in the long run. Raising the minimum wage in the United States will do more harm than good to society because of the long-term effects.
Most Americans agree with the minimum wage hike. According to The New Labor Forum, “73 percent of the public—including 90 percent of Democrats, 71 percent of independents, and 53 percent of Republicans—favors raising the federal minimum wage” (Dreier, 3) This is
The statistics, which Ira Knight cites are clear and show that increasing the minimum wage would help millions of people. U.S Bureau of Labor
Some feel that it is more important to enjoy work and get less money than it is to hate work and get paid more. There are many things in life that are overlooked. Everyone has family and it is important to value that. People who can value their families have achieved success in their own way.
Rex Huppke writes, correctly, that raising the minimum wage is a complex issue. The majority of Americans agree to higher minimum wage, most being Democrats, while many owners believe that we should keep it the same. He says that people like to raise the minimum wage because “[I]t appeals to people, and it sounds like the right thing to do” (146).
The minimum wage is one of the most controversial issues on our country, which is United States has been facing last ten years. There have been never ending debates over this issue until the government, company, and others party stand together, and raise the minimum wage throughout the nations. There are communities that believe raise the minimum wage has negative impact of every sector of the country. Other communities have different beliefs over the issue, raising the minimum wage helps the poor people, and would help not hurt our economy.
The argument for minimum wage has remained remake consistent over the years. Some people are against minimum wage and the other think minimum wage can help you in a certain way. In the midst of the Great Depression, the Unites States federal government passed the Fair Labor Standards Act. The law has been amended almost every year to expand coverage of the wage floor and to increase the wage itself. Many of the fifty states have enacted their own minimum wage laws, some of them set even higher than the federal level. Minimum wage jobs don’t only help adults at hard times it help teenagers and college students. I learned that the proponents for minimum wage believe the raw value of one’s labor to a business
I have been in the workforce for many years and have just recently enrolled at SNHU to finish my Business Degree. Most of my working career has been in management where I have personally hired over 350 employees over the years and truly understand that a person’s salary must be synchronized to the value that an individual brings to your company. The lower the wage the less important this really is, the higher the wage the more value that they have to bring to the table. As the minimum wage increases so must the abilities, skills and education level of the worker. My persuasive essay “The Economics Against a Federally Mandated Minimum Wage” presented many challenges since the issue impacts not only the worker but the business and the unemployed as well. I found this to be a very complex issue and required a great deal of extensive research and evaluation in order to find strong supporting evidence and articles that would support my position.
increase the minimum salary but planning to see the proof of the opposing side indifferently. He points out any evidence of antagonists referring to scholarly subjects toward increasing the minimum wage will affect career growth and the inflation of money will negatively impact consumers, but he states additional studies that oppose
That a higher minimum wage will help create jobs and grow the economy; that the declining value of the minimum wage is one of the primary causes of wage inequality between low- and middle-income workers; and that a majority of Americans, including a slim majority of self-described conservatives, support increasing the minimum wage.
Finally another great source of information such as statistics that I found very helpful was the pew research center. This site tends to post new and old survey results on a wide range of topics including minimum wage.
According to the Quinnipiac University Poll, 71% of American people support an overall increase in the national minimum wage (Polling Report, January 4-7, 2014). In 2014, according to the Pew Research Center/USA Today, 73% of Americans who strongly favored an increase in the minimum wage wanted an increase from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour which is an increase of $2.85 (Polling Report, January 15-19, 2014). Now, in the year 2016, 58% of American people in the year 2016 continue to favor an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour (Polling Report, August 9-16, 2016). In 2016, Americans now support the idea that the minimum wage should be increased by $7.75. Reform liberalism favors equality in which each individual is given the opportunity to grow individually, financially, and economically. Generally, Americans who support an increase in federal minimum wage support government intervention in the market system rather than allowing prices to be determined by market forces. As previously mentioned, reform liberalists support government intervention in order to ensure equality among all. Based on these polls, the positon of most Americans regarding the federal minimum wage supports the idea that the political beliefs of the American people can generally be characterized as reform
The minimum wage has arguably become the most controversial topic regarding our economy today, as it influences one of the largest classes of people within the United States, the working class. Federally, the minimum wage has not been raised in eight years, so it has stayed at $7.25 per hour for all non-exempt workers (U.S. DoL). The opinions on this topic are typically split across a progressive-conservative line, with progressives being in favor of a raise from $7.25, and conservatives wanting to stay at the current rate. This can be seen when looking at the typical progressive stances from states and municipalities that raise the minimum wage for businesses operating within their jurisdiction, since the higher rate among all levels of
In posing these questions to my family i saw what the study pointed out and that is that even know there is quite a big gap in earning some of the issues are the same the first question i asked What is your Greatest aspiration in life? the resounding answer was happy and healthy which is similar to the answer the study got. the next question what is your greatest aspiration for you children? and this too fielded about the same answer that the study got and that was that the children to have a sense of self reliance and to be happy and content but an addendum to that question is do you feel responsible for their successes and failures this was a resounding yes the responsibility of carrying the burden of success and failure was hard because of the simple fact is do you use your money to help or do you find another way to help the last question in the series was how does money help or hinder you life goals. the answers were different the median income parents said that the money neither help or hindered the situation at hand but more money would be nice to to other things but was unnecessary the family with the higher income said that money helps the situation because of the giving component the ability to give time and money to a worthy cause other that his own. during these conversations i saw the similarities in the answers even though there is a
