The historian David Blight says that Lincoln’s message in the Gettysburg Address was to help the people recover from the deficit from the Battle of Gettysburg and the casualties that were caused by it. Lincoln simply wants to rebuild the country.

The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches in American history. The History Place indicates that on November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln went to a battle field positioned in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where three dreadful days of battle occurred called the Battle of Gettysburg. While he was attending the battle field to dedicate it as a national cemetery, he read his speech to the public. After the main orator, Edward Everett of Massachusetts, delivered his speech that lasted about two hours, it was Lincoln’s turn. Everyone was shocked that it only lasted a little over two minutes.      The Battle of Gettysburg was the most decisive battle for the North, and it lasted for a total of three days. It began on July 1 and ended on July 3, 1863. The Confederacy was going on the offensive and was beginning to venture into Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington D.C. They encountered Union troops as they advanced towards Harrisburg where they planned to cut off Union supply lines and to steal provisions that they needed. The Battle of Gettysburg became the bloodiest multi-day battle ever fought in United States history. At the end of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Union claimed victory, and they would use this psychological advantage throughout the rest of the Civil War.

The tone and stage are set with the background of the great battle field of Gettysburg’s. Our nation is involved in a great civil war between its brothers with two different views and divisions. President Lincoln has the daunting task as the President of the United States to bring healing to this torn country; to remind the country that it was only 87 years earlier that this young country started on its great experiment. The thesis statement answers the question and reminds the audience that all men are created equal and that the basis on which our country was founded on was liberty and equality.

Starting at Culp’s Hill, going around Cemetery Hill and going down Cemetery Ridge South of Gettysburg with 90,000 troops. The Confederates surrounded the fishhook with 70,000 troops. Robert E. The Gettysburg address was not so much focused on an issue or debate. When Lincoln started writing this speech, its intention was to be in memory, devotion and honor to those who died, and also to declare the ground as a cemetery. The time of the speech was towards the end of the civil war, when the North and the South where still fighting after a bitter 4 year war. The battle of Gettysburg had already been fought and Lincoln had given the distinguished Gettysburg address just a few months before. He spoke of freedom, devotion, and the ideals for which he believed the Union stood. The Richmond Examiner expressed this thought towards The Gettysburg Address: "Kings are usually made to speak in the magniloquent language supposed to be suited to their elevated position. On the present occasion, Lincoln acted the clown." Here, the Richmond Examiner mentions that "Lincoln acted the clown", meaning that he didn't use fancy words or language to convey his message in the address. As the President of the United States, it would be expected for him to use a higher language level. While Lincoln did use simpler wording, his directness aided in a powerful speech that would continue to stay in the heads of Americans up until now.

Past president, Barack Obama once stated “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek”. This quote means that if we keep pursuing this concept that somebody else is going to do our needed work in the future, then we as a country, society, and even world, will never world, will never be able to take the right steps to be successful. We are the generation that the previous one spoke of, we need to step up to the plate and take action. Three ideas that came into being that relate to this quote are the Gettysburg address speech, a passage in the novel “Me: Stories of My Life”, and the Black Lives Matter protest.
