Lastly the Gettysburg Address was one of the main turning points in the war. In Document D Lincoln talks about how the soldiers on the battlefield were holy for fighting in Gettysburg. President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address, during the address Lincoln talks about the soldiers that were fighting in Gettysburg. Also Lincoln addressed slavery in the Gettysburg address, Lincoln asked his supporters to help the slavery problem.(document D). The supporters tried to help Lincoln by giving freedom to slaves.

The title of this source is the Gettysburg address written by President Abraham Lincoln. This primary source is a speech written in 1863. This speech was written during a historically unique time in American history called the Civil War (1861-1865). The Civil War was a time in history when brother was fighting brother and friend was fighting friend. The Republic that our founding fathers build was being torn apart. The Gettysburg address is a cry to the American people during the ceremony to honor the fallen soldiers and keep on fighting to save the beloved Republic.

Lee (Confederacy) and George G. Meade (Union) led their armies into a three-day battle, resulting in the casualties of over 50,000 Confederate and Union soldiers, more than a third of Lee’s army. When the dust settled, Meade and his army had come out on top. The Union army had won. Months later, in November 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his most famous to date, the Gettysburg Address, a speech dedicating the battlefield as a cemetery for those who gave their life for their country and those who inhabit it. The Battle of Gettysburg's resulted in a total count of “51,000 soldiers either being killed, wounded, captured, or missing in the three-day battle” (“Gettysburg”). The battle took place in Pennsylvania because Confederate General Robert E. Lee was coming from a victory at Chancellorsville. After this win Lee wanted to invade the north in order to take pressure off of the south, threaten northern cities, and subsequently diminish the north's spirit. His invasion lead Union General George Gordon Meade to stay in between Lee and Washington thus setting the stage for the battle of Gettysburg. It was one of the biggest turning points for the Union in the Civil War because the Union managed to win due to military strategies, and inflict heavy casualties (“Gettysburg”).

In his speech he uses repetition, alliteration, and antithesis to demonstrate recognition to those who departed. The passionate and certainty of the speech was used to convey his point. From July 1st to July 3rd, 1863, the most famous and most important Civil War Battle took place in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Confederates under Robert E. Lee advanced on the Union in hopes of taking the major city of Philadelphia, Baltimore, or even Washington D.C. Union commander General George Meade was sent to make sure none of this would happen. General Robert E. Lee was determined to invade the North and win a victory important for southern morale, leads his army toward Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he hopes to destroy railroad bridges linking east with west. He is unaware that a large union force headed by General Meade is headed in the same direction.

On June 30th, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was a simple small town in the Union. On July 1st, it became a battleground; the town’s residents caught in the middle of a bloody battle. It is simply commonly known that the Union won the Civil War. While most are aware of the Union’s victory, a fair amount less know the reasons why.
