My Gilman scholarship follow-on project will focus on breaking down the barrier of misunderstanding of Gilman scholarship eligibility between student and introduce more international education opportunity for low-income students. After coming back from Japan I will create a flyer to put in the study abroad office for student take. The flyer will explain Gilman scholarship eligibility specific detail include: an applicant must be a US citizen, Pell grant recipient, studying abroad at least 4 weeks also need to be accepted to a study abroad program. The deadline for submitting the application will be also mentioned in the flyer. In the back of the flyer, I will include a list of resource student can get help from the university. Hope to open more opportunities to study abroad from the low-income student by sharing my experience applying for study abroad. Many low-income students including myself had a misconception of study abroad is very expensive and financial aid might not support study abroad. I want to introduce students to the Gilman scholarship as well as the challenge I had faced when deciding to apply to study abroad in Japan. The detail includes in the PowerPoint are the photo of my Japan trip, share the story about my abroad experience, how I had overcome the challenge of financial need through the help of Gilman scholarship. Hoping student doesn’t limit himself or herself to explore the world and give study abroad a try. From taking the course in Japan and living with a host family, I had learned a new language that can benefit me to open more career opportunities. If I didn’t go to Japan I might never learn Japanese. I will add in my personal challenge I had faced when I am making the decision to apply for study abroad and the challenge I encounter after I got accepted. As well as some of the challenge I face while living in Japan. The idea of stepping out of comfort zone was not easy, especially spending life in a different country that shares different culture and language. I want to join the Year in Japan program coordinator together to promote the Country of Japan, and encourage the student to step out of their comfort zone and try to consider a country to study abroad where English is not the primary
