Every day in the United States hurricanes, floods, fires, accidents and other disasters happen. Once the organization is contacted, they are more than likely the first organization to respond. During hard times, the American Red Cross has a giving site where volunteers can go online and buy items to help support the victims of the disaster. For 18 dollars a volunteer can donate three blankets. For 20 dollars a volunteer can give hot meals to two people. For 2,000 dollars, a volunteer can supply a food truck that will be rushed to the victims of a disaster. 91 percent of its funds on programs support around 200 disasters in the United States daily.

Ernest Holmes addresses a trepidation we may have when giving: our resources will be temporarily depleted. It is common sense that the more we give, the less we have; but there is a principle at work which defies common sense, because the appearance of loss and lack is deceptive. Once we have sown a seed our hands are empty, but the soil is full and soon we will have our hands full with the harvest of that seed. If we had held onto that seed, there would be no harvest and we would eventually be empty-handed. However, giving in a principled manner does not incur a loss, but gains. Giving, as a matter of principle, is the difference between gaining more or having less. Of course, if we go through the motions of giving — appearing to give, but actually throwing money away in an unprincipled manner, then we have simply wasted our time, and our treasure. Not every seed sown, grows; some fall on hard, stony ground and never take root. Not every prayer is heard and answered; some fall on deaf ears — our own. Having ears, we hear not. Having eyes, we see not. And having our hands full, we give not. It is a shame, because we could give, have and enjoy more.

There are many opportunities to give back to people every day. It could be the time you give someone or something they need to sustain them, and keep them going. The fundamentals of giving back are often seen through charity work or even so much as donating a few items of clothing. I, however, decided to devote my time to feeding the homeless through the Salvation Army.

But, a smile can make all the change. A compliment can be the difference between life and death. People these days are so good at hiding everything, so if you ask them about their day, It is a good conversation starter and it is a good way to let them know that you care. even a small gesture such as helping them with groceries or lending a dollar or two can show them that people out there are good, and do care. I had an instance back when I was a freshman. I was having a hard day because of a great a teacher gave me on a homework assignment and slouched around the entire school day. as I was at my locker grabbing my jacket and my books, a boy walked up to me and begin a conversation. he was a former best friend of mine and we had not talked for over 2 years. even though we only spoke about three sentences, I had a smile on my face the entire way home and I told everybody about what happened. so that same experience enjoy that I felt can be shared amongst many. I am sure he was not aware of the way he made me feel but nobody ever is. Anne Frank once said, “no one has ever become poor by giving.” “Giving” incorporates so many things: giving money, giving food, giving clothes, giving gifts, etc. Personally, I see time as the most significant thing one can give to others. Volunteering is, at its core, giving your time to help others. Volunteering has always been a big part of my life; at a younger age I would help the ladies in the cafeteria serve lunch after Sunday school and clean up the main hall afterwards, in high school I was in organizations that presented me with ample opportunities to volunteer, and presently I still manage to volunteer every semester in college.

In Stave 2 of A Christmas Carol, the Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge how Fezziwig, Scrooge’s old employer, was so kind to his employees. To this act of kindness Scrooge states,”The happiness he gives, is quite as great as if it cost a fortune.” When Scrooge sees how generous his employer was and what a positive impact he made on others by being generous and giving, it leads Scrooge to change his ways and become a nicer person that has a beneficial impact on others. As Morrie said in the article,“Tuesdays With Morrie: The Eighth Tuesday We Talk About Money”, “Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” Moreover, caring for others and spreading kindness not only to oneself but also others, whether it be by donating to charity or just plainly going around and doing a good deed for others, is the key to happiness. No matter what it may be, even the smallest movement of giving can make a big difference in someone’s life. Just by putting a smile on someone’s face, a positive impact on the world has been made. Devoting yourself to something and being a better person will help bring accomplishment and joy to life and make a long lasting impact on those around you.
