You’re walking through SIUE halls in peck hall, and then someone just jumps out singing and dancing on this joyous occasion. Does something like that really happen? No! There is a lot of hard work that goes into something like that, and glee portrays it all wrong. All the hard work that goes into it like: cleaning the choreography, learning the voice parts, and the many hours of practice. In a recent article by spark notes, in reality 90% of choir kids are theater geeks and really want to help train their voices, while in glee it seems like they just sing then go to the Gym. Show choir is so much more than just busting out in song; it’s about making friendship doing something you really love to do and to make a lasting impression on someone’s life. If we continue to let glee gives us the idea of what show choir is, then the real show choir world will fall into a myth.
Show choir is a lifestyle to most it as we call it a way of living. Some people find it very offensive when they ask “do you want to join show choir”, and then they get a response like. NO I hate glee. My first question is what does glee have to do with it? Do people even know what show choir really is? Glee has made millions of dollars trying to portray their way of thinking about show choir. Do you ever see the parents that put in the hard work of costumes, stitching dresses that have fallen apart, making sure everyone costumes are fit, and they work hard at bingo most of the time to pay for it. On
Choir, a place where there is either unified success or widespread failure. Experiencing choir for the last four years of high school, it has taught me great life lessons, both challenging and heartbreaking. Our class everyday consists of sight reading, learning a new song that is sometimes in another language, and trying to beat out the other variety of girls that fill the black risers that are wearing thin due to age.
talent show seem more important than it actually is. This is the theme of the story: Don’t get
If you are not familiar with what Show Choir is, and the amount of time and work ethic you need, then you are in for a big surprise. Show Choir has evolved over the past years increasingly. Forget the young men and women in dark jackets and dresses standing on old risers and singing nice choral pieces. Show Choir has become a mini-musical sport. Many claim that Cheerleading and Marching Band is considered a sport, why should Show Choir be any different? Yes, show choir is mostly singing and dancing, but there is much more to it than one would think. I would know this because Show Choir has been a part of my life for almost 3 years now. I have experienced the hardship, fun, disappointment, pain, time, and joy, but it all paid off at competition when we would go to awards and see how we placed. Show choir is a sport, just as much as “cheerleading” or “marching band.”
“I think performers are all show off anyways, especially musicians. Unless you show off, you're not going to get noticed.” - Elton John. The audience is waiting, and all the performers are in place, waiting like statues. The different people in show choir have special abilities to help contribute and make the performance great; although the groups are categorized very differently. Three types of performers make the show more interesting to watch on and off the stage. There are the supportive, the helpful, and the patient ones.
The fundamentals of performing between both schools have more in common than the practices and rehearsals, it is just more intense in high school. While in eighth grade show choir we had one big long mash up song full of about three separate songs all by the same person. In high school there are five independent songs each by different artists with various styles too. On the other hand, the choreo involved does have a great deal of correlation. In high school during each song there are partner and individual sections, as well as parts in which focus more on the guys than the girls, and vice versa. This
At the end of ninth grade, I auditioned for the Broken Arrow Show Choir. I didn’t care about which one I would get into, I just wanted to keep that part of my happiness. I did everything perfectly: I sightread, I sang my prepared piece from my favorite musical, and I danced so well, that even the older kids complimented me. I made it, I made Tiger Mystique. All I remember thinking was I got to stay with my best friends, doing what I loved. But my
I have been to many different musical performances throughout my life, and have performed in about as many as well. These performances range in purpose and technique from a Native American powwow intended to unify people of different tribes, to professional a cappella groups performing in front of large audiences for entertainment. No matter what culture presents music or what genre it belongs to, something can be learned from a performance. One specific musical performance that I would like to analyze is the Uintah High School choral concert titled “Couch Potato 2,” which took place in Vernal, Utah, on February 23, 2017. This concert, “Couch Potato 2,” is a perfect example of a community performance designed to engage the crowd as well as the performers.
In an effort to make students more successful, comfortable, and enjoying their class, the format was altered from a typical “choir rehearsal” to something more akin to Music Appreciation/ General & Vocal Music. So far, the results have been positive. Students now do not sing every class period, but are experiencing and learning about many different aspects and styles of music. They are graded on classwork (work completion, effort, & participation), formative assessments (classwork graded for accuracy), and summative assessments (projects lasting longer than one class period). Friday choirs will no longer perform in chapels. I apologize if this is something you had looked forward to. However, I have offered any student who wants to sing, the opportunity to sing in chapel as a small group. This is something that students would work on as an alternative to one of our class activities. So far, 3 students have come forward asking to sing.
First of all, it is extremely rude and disrespectful to kids who are still performing! I have asked 10 kids who performed that night if people should leave in the middle of a performance and 9 out of the 10 of them said no! It’s not just me, many, in fact, tons of people think it’s impolite. Wynn Dyer (a performer from that night) said, “No! That is just plain rude!” She is really compassionate about singing and it was ignorant to her. When I went to my cousin’s concert at Manheim Central middle school, it was the complete opposite. No one left
What is Choir? According to Sam Wilson, choir is a class where you are taught how to sing. If you work hard enough, you can even get a solo and sing in the concert. Wilson says that “Singing is a good skill to have because it is something you can do wherever you are, and people even make a living off of it.” The next concert is in May, you could try to join choir third quarter if you think you may be interested.
I have never been able to sing, nor will I ever have the ability to sing well. That is why I have talented friends. Throughout the years, Kenzie and I have always gone and seen the shows the school was putting on. With having a few good friends in all the shows, it was always important to me and Kenzie that we went to support our friends. With both of us having jobs we were lucky to find a day that worked for both of us. Luckily we thought ahead and bought our tickets online to secure that we would have the best seats possible, which are always front row so we can see our friends up close and even for any possible microphone problems we would always be in the clear. The drive to the school was normal, Kenzie drove and we talked about what we knew from what our friends had been saying and what parts we were most excited for. Mine was the fact that Hadyn was playing a character so different from the ones it seems like she always has during these shows, which would include a sad love song and a few pretty dresses. This time it was going to be all black and some deeper, darker singing.
During one of the performances the choir was doing a side step to their song, then they all spun in a circle and one of the girls fell down. After she fell down, she was trying to get up and she kept stepping on her dress, then three people had to help her get up. Also, my sister accidently walked into the middle of the stage while the other choir was performing, she saw she came out at the wrong time and turned around and walked back stage again. It was so funny and honestly made my night. Because of these instances, I was feeling pretty happy and giggly the whole performance, but there was one song in particular that almost brought me to tears. The song is called “Breath of Heaven” and an all girls choir called Angels of Music sang it. The harmony was perfect and the song was breathtaking. That was hands down the best song of the
Singing can create a sense of pure joy which dissolves social, physical and economic barriers. Choirs can bring varied groups of people together to make beautiful music. “Bringing together an array of personalities, voice types and qualities, and varying levels of training to sing as one unifying choir is...an inexpensive and enjoyable way to be educated” (Di Nino). Being part of a choir can provides the opportunities to experience the cultures and ideas of the people in the choir. Mingling with people of different backgrounds is the best way to work with others, learn in a group setting, and nurture love and understanding of

A singular sensation: is exactly how I felt throughout the show while watching this stupendous musical. I went to see the September 26th showing of “A Chorus Line” at Patti Strickel Harrison Theatre. I was in awe and incredibly proud to come from a university filled with an abundance amount of talent. A Chorus line is a musical theatre show that surrounds a director, Zach, and his assistant, Laura, holding a dance audition for an impending Broadway show. In the opening scene, Zach is instructing all of the hopefuls with intricate dance combinations, and then they then break into the opening song of “I hope I get it”. As the show goes on, cuts are continuously made, and it comes down to the final interviews. Zach asks everyone about the time in their life when the realized their passion and love for performing.
