In our world, there are currently 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty. These individuals manage to live on the equivalent of what you can purchase in the United States for $1.25. Imagine what can be bought for $1.25 in an average city; perhaps a single soda, a small coffee, half of a gallon of gas, or a single hot dog from a corner. There is a misconception that one can purchase more with the same amount of money in an impoverished country than in the United States. In reality, this number has been adjusted for purchasing power. This means that no matter where one is in the world, $1.25 is sufficient for an individual to be able to make two simple meals. Ending world poverty is a daunting challenge. If we help countries help themselves, then there will eventually be little to no need for future aid.
Global poverty ends when the local economy is able to trade its way into an improved future. The most significant alleviations of poverty have been seen in those countries that have been able to create and trade goods. By building an industry and joining the global market, an impoverished country can generate revenue to in turn be reinvested into the local economy. The current policies in place limit the potential of poor countries to join this market and improve themselves. Reforming trade negotiation and the limitations placed on the market will allow these smaller countries to create their own sources of income.
Obviously there are countless causes of global poverty. Human greed alone can be blamed for much of what goes wrong in the world today. However, if there are improvements in governance, aid, immigration, and trade there is potential to significantly diminish that 1.3 billion people who currently living on less than $1.25 a
