The experiment started when Karen Lott, the principal of Brennan-Rogers, chose to extend the school day by an hour and 25 minutes. Her reason, she wanted to close the gap between her low performing school and the neighboring high performing schools. The result, Brennan-Rogers School had exhausted teachers and students and the same test results. The question that begged for an answer was why would a principal extend a school day to bring up test scores? In 2010 the Katherine Brennan School merged with other neighboring schools due to federal funding. This merge brought together a low income school with high income schools. The result was devastating for the children. Student behavior was out of control, a student set another student’s hair on fire (Bailey, 2014). Behavior was determined as the cause of low test scores. Only 12 percent of third graders met state reading goals compared to the 57 percent met by the district.

What if you were terrified to go to your school every day? 160,000 students miss school everyday because they get bullied and are scared of what will happen (“Bullying Statistics”). Bullying has been a major problem in schools for too long. Students should not be scared to go to a place that is supposed to be safe and where they can express themselves. Students that bully never get the punishment they deserve which causes them to continue to act. When you go to school, you should know that if you are getting treated in a horrific way, the people who were treating you that way will get punished. Students who bully should be suspended from school.

In a family, it is the relations between children and parents as well as siblings. A child’s success depends on both the physical presence of adults and attention given to the child by adults. The High School and Beyond sample shows that students who have two parents, one sibling, and a mother who expects college education have the lowest percentage of dropping out of school at 8.1%. On the other hand, students who have one parent, four siblings, and no college expectation have a whopping 30.6% of dropping out. This is caused by the absence of the single-parent as he or she is most likely working. In addition, having more siblings means that the parent’s attention is split and each child receive less consideration. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the second category has a higher dropout rate because they have less social capital.

It is estimated that dropouts from 2006 alone will cost taxpayers $17 billion in Medicaid and uninsured medical expenses alone over the ir lifetimes (Alliance for Excellence Education, 2010). Sadly, dropouts often have children that become dropouts and a cycle is created which continues (Dropout and TruancyPrevention,2011). Given these statistics and costs to society, it is imperative that we seek solutions to this problem.

With a meager revenue, these kids are more likely to drop out of high school or not attend college in order to financially support their family. Other times the children of divorced parents have fewer future opportunities sent their way because they have less access to economic, parental, and community resources. Whatever the case may be, it is extensively documented that being raised by only one parent engenders a poor attendance record, a menial literacy score, a lower GPA, and an inferior desire to attend college. Students who do not have stable parenting at home can lead to students dropping out. In the article “How Broken Families Rob Children of Their Chances for Future Prosperity” it discusses broken families earn less and experience lower levels of educational achievement. In 1950 the number of children living with broken families was 12 for every 100; 42 years later in 1992 the number grew to 58 for every 100 children born. A professor at the University of Michigan did a study to find the average family income for one-parent families compared to two parent families. Her studies showed that the average income for one-parent families is $25,300 and the average income for two-parent family income is $43,600. Students growing up in a stable and two-parent family have better chances of reaching income security as adults. A truly saddening fact is that almost half of American families go through poverty after divorce. The poverty and divorce of the adults leads to problems for the children. When children do not have a stable family, their parents sometimes

Statistics shows that 48% of all college students “have ever been pregnant or gotten someone pregnant. The problem with gender is that most college dropouts with kids are females. Studies shows that 71% of women drop out because taking care of a child takes more time whereas to male students who mostly works to provide for their children. Fewer than 2 percent finish college by age 30 and that is why mostly men are successful in job employment. Parenting is usually set up as the mother takes time and raise her children while the father provides through work and education. This topic is important to see if there is some significance to discipline, academic success, attendance, out of school suspension, and dropouts. This study will also look at school resource officers’ data to get an understanding of how their data compares with many of the school referrals. It also will be looking at schools with a high poverty index versus schools that do not have as high of a poverty index. The study will be looking at fifty percent as the mark that will divide the high and low poverty school districts.
