Civil rights refer to the constructive activities that the government must conduct to establish equality for all the citizens in the country. In most cases, the term is normally linked with the shielding of minority persons including women, Hispanics, and African Americans (Patterson, 2014). The civil rights are used to counterbalances the rule of the majority in a democracy, which normally disregards the minorities. Therefore, it ensures that all persons are treated equally regardless of their marital status, gender, or races in areas such as housing, education, and employment (Patterson, 2014).

Civil right is considered as the fundamental and basic rights of citizens to political and social freedom with the assurance of equality. Civil rights, gives every citizen equal opportunities and equal protection under the law, notwithstanding of race, religion, or other personal characteristics like disabilities. Civil Rights are types of laws that embrace common situations that affect individual’s lives, such as employment, voting, housing, education and public accommodations and facilities. These laws exist as a matter of creating policies that promote opportunities for all persons and equality without regard of gender, race, disabilities, religion or national origin. This legal phenomenon might happen by various reasons: lack of equality in the society, prejudice against minorities, or existence of previous laws that support the oppressed.

The Civil Rights Movement was an African American revolution, that started because African Americans were being judged by the color of their skin. Africans Americans felt as though they were second class citizens. They were segregated within the school system, businesses, assaulted daily by white citizens with fists or attack by police dogs, and denied equal rights. African Americans felt that things had to change and that they deserve all rights as an American. The religious beliefs that was foundation of the Civil Rights Movement differ. Martin Luther King, Jr’s. religion was Christianity, and felt that all Americans should be integrated and get along despite the brutality of some white supremacists. But Malcolm X’s religion was Muslim and more militant. His belief in Black Nationalism was that white America wanted to keep African Americans from empowering themselves by political, economic and social success and that violence could be use if needed. Throughout the 1960’s, the widespread movement for African American civil rights had transformed in terms of its goals and strategies. The campaign had intensified in this decade, characterized by greater demands and more aggressive efforts. Although the support of the Civil Rights movement was relatively constant, the goals of the movement became more high-reaching and specific, and its strategies became less compromising. African Americans’ struggle for equality during the 1960’s was a relentless movement that used change for progress. In essence, the transformation of the Civil Rights Movement throughout the 1960’s forwarded the evolution of America into a nation of civil equality and freedom.

With regard to civil rights, the government is supposed to ensure that all United States citizens have equal rights and are fairly represented across multiple areas, including politics, the economy, court hearing, and government programs. Since the Bill of Rights and the Constitution were devised, the government has conducted enacted many changes in an effort to protect the civil rights of American citizens. In particular, civil rights have undergone the most changes with regard to the plight of African Americans and minorities, women, the disabled, and gays and lesbians. Nevertheless, there remain certain areas in which civil rights must improve in order to truly ensure the equality of all American citizens.

The civil rights movement was a struggle for the African Americans in the 1950s through the late 1960s to attain civil rights, equal to those of whites. They also protested for equal opportunity in jobs, housing, education, the right to vote, the right of equal entry to public places, as well as the right to be free from racial discrimination. Through our constitution every citizen is created and seen as the same. No matter who you are, what skin color you wear, we should all be treated equally. The 14th amendment, the 19th amendment, The Brown v. Board of education and The McLaurin v. Civil rights are the rights yet privileges that all individuals can enforce (Hall, 2014). Civil rights are those rights that are granted to individuals through the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is recognized as the first ten amendment of the United States Constitution. Those ten amendments are the rights of individual’s civil liberties. The Bill of Rights consists of the Right to free speech, Right to bear arms, No unauthorized quartering of soldiers, Freedom from search and seizure, Freedom from self-incrimination, Trail by jury, Protection from excessive bail, and Unlisted rights and powers (Hall, 2014).

According to chapter four of the text we have civil liberties, and rights that protect our freedom. Although they sound synonyms they are not. For instance, civil rights are, “limitations on government power, intended to protect freedoms that governments may not legally intrude on” (108). Civil rights are in place to protect people from being discriminated against for their race, disability ect. Whereas civil liberties, “are guarantees that government officials will treat people equally and that decisions will be made on the basis of merit rather than race” (108). Therefore, rather than promising equality to people based on their race, or gender, civil rights does it based on the bill of rights.One of the most important amendments is, freedom of speech.

These rights are to protect individuals from unfair treatments and discrimination. Civil Liberties are freedom to exercise customary rights, as of speech, assembly, the right to privacy and to petition the government without unwarranted or arbitrary interference by the government and these rights are guaranteed by the laws of a country, as in the U.S. By the bill of rights.
