To be a hero can can be defined in many ways. Heros are usually associated with courage, fearlessness, noble qualities, outstanding achievements, and a kind heart. These traits are what make up an ideal contributor to society helping those in need. The word hero can have a different meaning for cultures and religions. Osama Bin Laden may be considered a hero to the radical islams but he is a horrible human being to the rest of the world. It all depends on the views of the people.

What makes a hero? Saving a puppy from a burning building? Or what about being a single mother raising three kids and working two jobs? Both of these could be good candidates for heroes since they both possess the characteristic of strength—not just physical strength, but mental strength. This is one of the most important traits of a hero but it is not the only one. Courage, intelligence, and morality are also necessary in order to really get penciled in to the “hero” category. Being a hero also means doing what’s right almost all the time, even when no one is looking. A hero can sacrifice something for themselves to help others in need. A hero can fix problems, but they do not need super strength or the ability to fly, they can be a normal person. A hero is someone who keeps fighting for what’s right, any ordinary person can be a hero, heroism is not being selfish, it’s being selfless.

But we don’t live in a comic book or fairy tale. Heroism is about everyday people who are helpful, caring, and never cowardly.

What exactly is a hero? To some it’s a fictional character with a cape who possesses a special power that helps them do great things for others; and to others it a completely different story. To me, a hero is someone who has made a good difference on not just my life, but others as well and has inspired us to never give up, to better ourselves, and to try and live life to the fullest. For example, Josh Hamilton, he has made a big difference and has had a good impact on my life in probably every aspect you can think of and not only that, but he has shown me that you can always get back up and fight, you can always overcome your life’s obstacles, also he has shown me that you should always have your faith in the Lord.

But that as it may, true heroes are also everyday people. These heroes take on a different role, as instead of flying, and battling the evil, they endure hardships, and face struggles. However, like the heroes we’ve originally learned, these people are those who are selfless, and refuse to back down. Our heroes strive for the best in everyone, and everything, without thinking of the reward and outcomes. With strong determination and perseverance, true heroes have the will to help others despite the risks, and work toward the greater good without the crave of becoming rewarded.

In America, contrary to popular belief, a hero is not simply someone who wears a cape and saves the town from an evildoer. A hero is a mother, a school bus driver, a mechanical engineer, a farmer. Someone who puts others before themselves, even when no one is watching or praising them. A little kid can be a hero by picking up trash off the ground or sitting with someone at lunch who is sitting alone. It is the little things that a person does that makes them a hero. A mother is a hero by providing for her children. If she did not provide for them then they possibly may not even be alive. Heroes don’t have to fly like Superman, shoot webs from one building to another like Spiderman, and have a shield like Captain America, or save multiple lives as these superheroes did in movies. Heroes can have a badge on their uniform, a teacher degree over their desk, a mug that say “#1 Grandpa” in their cupboards, or just be the random guy walking and saves a little girl from getting hit by a car. Although, I do feel like all people are heroes in certain circumstances I think some specific attributes exist that aid in making a hero. Imagine this, somebody that everybody admires, always looks perfect, always agrees with other people, strong and beefy, and trying to save the world. Heroes aren’t always that. Everybody has their own hero, and they don’t have to go on as a well known hero. As long as they did something that that person thinks they did for the good, they would stand a hero to that person. A hero doesn’t have to consider themselves as a hero either. Some heroes remain villains by people opposing them. Susan B. Anthony helped made it possible for women that vote in 1920. Martin Luther King Jr. contributed to people of color getting the same rights as a Caucasian, during the civil right movement. Malala Yousafzai continues helping girls get educated in countries where girls cant go to school. All these people changed the world and they also helped make society a better place. Heroes are people that try their best to change the world, and make it a better place for people. Heroes stand up for what they believe in, and are not afraid to speak their minds, if it means they know that their words are doing good.
