It was dark, musty, and overpowering smell, too. No doubt a sewer. “ Bah! You should eat him… Ladies first!” said somebody. It was a hispanic accent. Manly. I started walking to the direction of the voice. “ Aw, thanks and you should make the fire, a man’s handy job.” That was a female voice, I wonder… I turned around a corner and saw three cyclops, and my brother. One was huge about thirteen feet tall the others were about nine feet tall. That’s still tall, but compared the the other one! The two cyclops that were talking were making Goo-Goo eyes at each other. One was hispanic and that was the guy, and the lady cyclops was pale white. “ Sure, my pretty lady.” the hispanic cyclops said. Wait were they.. Ugh! Flirting? The one who hadn't
The Cyclops, in The Odyssey and O Brother, Where Art Thou has noticeable relations that connect them both. The Cyclops in each story is a large man, who only has one eye. One website describes the Cyclopes race as, “a rough and uncivilized race of one-eyed giants.”(Hainsworth) Odysseus describes the giant as, “A prodigious man who slept in his cave alone, and took his flocks to graze afield, remote from all companions, knowing none but savage ways, a brute so huge.”(The Odyssey, Book 9, Lines 195-201)The Cyclops in each story characterizes similiarity between the two stories. Odysseus, the main character of The Odyssey and Ulysses, the main character of O Brother, Where Art Thou have unpleasant interactions with the Cyclops in each of the stories. Big Dan Teague, the con man, characterizes the “Cyclops” in O Brother, Where Art Thou by raising havoc in Ulysses and his partners’ lives. In each story an attempt to blind the creature offers a distraction for each character to escape from the Cyclops. The Coen
Odysseus’s escape from the Cyclops is one of great intelligence. A Cyclops is a giant one eyed monster. Homer said, “The booming voice and the very sight of the monster filled us with panic” (IX, 256). From the first moment Odysseus and his men set eyes on the Cyclops they know they are in trouble and will not be able to get out easily. The Cyclops, Polyphemus, eats two of Odysseus’ men from the start. As soon as this happens, Odysseus
Frightened by the large creature, Odysseus and his men scatter to the shadows of the cave before the large beast notices them. Directly after finishing his work, Polyphemus starts to poke at the fire in his cave, which was previously set by Odysseus and his shipmates. Once the fire flares up, Polyphemus notices Odysseus within the shadows, and without hesitation the gigantic creature questions who they men are, as well as where they’re from. This is when Odysseus begins speaking to the aforementioned creature, claiming his name to be Nohbdy, that he and his men are from Troy, and that their ship had crashed among the rocks of the island. After mentioning that his ship was broken up on the rocks, the mighty man picks up two of Odysseus’s men, bashes their heads in, then eats them whole, and goes to sleep. In the following morning, the cyclopes eats another two of Odysseus’s men. When the creature finally exits the cave, Odysseus looks to his
“Wow, she's talkative, you got a good one this time, cuz.” His voice was grinding on me and all I wanted to do was smack him.
“So, you ask me the name I’m known by, Cyclops? / I will tell you. But you must give me a guest-gift / as you’ve promised.
Everett immediately thinks of a plan, dressing up as the Klan’s color guard to rescue Tommy as well as cutting the wires to a burning cross statue, causing it to tumble on top of the Klan. This demonstrates that Everett’s brilliance to disguise himself so the Klan wouldn’t question his identity, rescues him from trouble with the Klan. His capability of possessing this trait also shows that Everett is ready of what is next to come. As a result, Everett demonstrates that he’s capable of using his intelligence, thinking of plans even when he is at risk to save his friend, Tommy from the Klan. Odysseus is also a man of cleverness like Everett. His ideas and plans are similar to Everett getting him out of trouble and to liberate himself as well as the men on his crew. In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus proudly spoke, “Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember, the gift you promised me, and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy, mother,
Odysseus’s was a very intelligent man and did not let his emotions rule. When facing the cyclops, Polyphemus, he shares, “…with my fighting heart, I thought at first to steal up to him, draw the sharp sword at my hip and stab his chest where the midriff packs the liver- I groped for the fatal spot but a fresh thought held me back.” But when he thought his plan through and weighed the outcome, he realized, “…at a stroke we'd finish off ourselves as well—how could we with our bare hands heave back that slab he set to block his tavern's gaping maw?” His revised plan to blind the cyclops would enable him and his men a better opportunity to escape the cave.
In both movies the Cyclops is a huge creature with one eye or someone larger than the hero with one eye.
Pride plays a large part in most Greek stories. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is a prideful leader, but this eventually comes back to hurt him. Odysseus’ pride becomes his punishment, but Odysseus learns from his mistakes and makes it through. In The Odyssey, Odysseus may have been a prideful leader, but he also proved himself to be brave, wise, and caring about his men and the people he encountered.
from the boat going to the cyclops and screaming his name to him. “ Cyclopes – if any man on
Odysseus exemplifies how men cause themselves more trouble. On his travels home, they find an island inhabited by Cyclops. Odysseus and his sense of adventure determine that they should ask for a gift from the Cyclops. So, Odysseus sails to a cove near one of the Cyclops’ camp and investigates the camp with twelve of his best men. Eventually, the Cyclops returns, traps, and eats some of Odysseus’s men. In the end, Odysseus and the remnants of his search party managed to blind the Cyclops and escape. While they are sailing away, Odysseus taunts the Cyclops twice. The first time the Cyclops throws a rock that pushes the ship to shore, and the second time he prays to Poseidon and then throws a mountain. Poseidon answers the Cyclops’s prayers later by making Odysseus’s trip home as difficult as possible. Odysseus laments to each person that he meets how unfair
A cyclops was a one-eyed monster. The first cyclopes were Arges, Steropes, and Brontes. They were the sons of Uranus and Gaea. These three cyclopes were locked in Tartarus by, Cronus and Uranus. After being released, they helped Zeus fight in the Titanomachy. Another cyclops who was more famous was Polyphemus. He was the son of Poseidon.
"Young lady". His voice was deep and scratchy. "Sorry sir, I thought you could use a hug". I said then left. "Now wait". I started speed walking away from him. He was probably there to buy a t.v. Whoops, now he couldn't because he had no money.
