In the story “I Just Wanna Be Average” the author Mike Rose argues that society very often neglects and doesn’t see the full value and potential of students.
The students all took a practice test and only thirty-three percent of the students have passed and the states minimum average is seventy-five percent. Throughout the school year, the students work effortlessly with Mr. Clark along with their school teachers prepare for the real test. Mr. Clark’s crazy and wild antics start to get to the students and they begin to respect him even more for it. They begin to see that he is only doing this with all of their best interests in mind. One of the students who was expelled’s mother complained about the way Mr. Clark ran things at his school and got the mayor involved. After Mr. Clark is found with the chains on the door, which is illegal and a fire safety hazard, and was arrested. All of the students came down to the Board of Education in Paterson and basically protested and ranted on how they wanted Mr. Clark to be released and return to his duties as principal. Eastside High’s assistant principal Mrs. Barrett claims that Mr. Clark was not the right choice to serve as principal of Eastside. But the students all say in rebuttal how Mr. Clark cares for them like no other and how he has done so much good for them that they will not accept anyone besides Mr. Clark. Soon after, Mr. Clark was released and good news was received. More than enough students
For many, high school determines our future. Miller had success as a football player, however, during his senior, he discovered an interest for literature after reading his first serious book: Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. This book, along with many classics, inspired Miller to believing that he could become a writer. After his high school graduation, he immediately applied to the University of Michigan, but he was declined due to his high school record. He then worked many jobs in order to save up for college. He then applied again to enter the University of Michigan and was admitted in 1934. He then graduated in 1938
At Hazelwood High School, they do things differently than at my school. At Hazelwood, most of the people worry about themselves and nobody else. Most of the school doesn’t get good grades and the school does not do anything about it. One day in English class Andy walked out when they were reading Macbeth because it was too emotional for Andy to handle. His friends were concerned and told the school counselor. They said, “But… but… it seems like… like… he needs help or somethin’.” Then the counselor said, “Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you boys this, but he is getting some outside counseling… So you boys can relax and be assured that he is getting whatever help he needs”(100). At Harrisburg High School, if someone had an issue like that, the counselors and teachers would be concerned, even if the person was getting outside help. Another thing about education that is different than mine is the school. In Ronda’s English homework, she wrote, “Our school building must have been built about a million years ago, because it was brown and tall and raggedy-looking, but it fit right in with the rest of the day”(16). At my high school, we are very fortunate to have a very new building to learn inside of. At Hazelwood High, they were not fortunate enough to have a new high school be built. Culture and education are very important pieces of people’s
In his junior year, Cedric is admitted to the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He believes this is the start of a new life for him, but when summer arrives he finds the classes much more difficult than his fellow MIT students who attended better schools and were better versed in math and science. Though he makes friends at MIT, he also sees that his ghetto background sets him apart from them. At the end of the program, Cedric is told by faculty director Leon Trilling that he would not be welcome in MIT as a college student. This infuriates Cedric, and he finds solace in returning to Ballou that fall despite offers to attend better schools for his Senior year.
Statistics show that 89 percent of children in public school graduate while 92 percent of children placed in private schools graduate. This number drops down to 44% if the has a low income. With this it is worth noting that Author Wes’ enrollment in private school and later military school were major factors in his development as a human in our society. He was placed in an environment where his progression was requested by his mother but his peers and those around him. An important quote stating so was when Wes, the author said, "That's when I started to understand that I was in a different environment.
Leading a meaningful life meant breaking away from the fear of criticism or rejection; conforming to society limits Illgunas’ definition of life. Illgunas’ suburban upbringing makes the danger of social conformity clear to him. Surrendering to society would consequently cause him to completely lose himself. After graduating from high school, Illgunas and his classmates follow the conventional path towards a higher education. Illgunas explains, “My high school class and I moved like a school of fish: we graduates were capable of going off on our own, in whatever direction we chose, but something demanded we all swim as one…” (6-7). Parallel to the claim Illgunas makes, graduates that do not attend college are stigmatized. Society has created a paradigm: after graduating high school, students should attend a traditional four year university, and then enter the “career world.” In Illgunas’ perspective, people in
In particular, school is an imperative part of a child's life that shapes who we become as adults. The difference between the type of school a person goes to, can determine the kind of person they will become later on in life. For example, the author, Wes Moore, is sent to military school after he was placed on academic and disciplinary probation at his public school. While he is at Valley Forge Military Academy he learns several characteristics such as leadership skills, respect and discipline. Shortly after arriving at Valley Forge, Wes observed how a young man quickly caught every person’s attention and how he demanded respect from his peers, the kind you earn from being a true leader. He described how it was the first time he was beginning to truly understand his surroundings:
In an equal society, it is very hard to stand out, even for someone as tall as him. He wanted to be known by other people as someone who had done well. It wasn’t about helping the society, it was about getting his name out there. Teachers only put him down about everything. He never received compliments, just disgusted looks. People, like his teachers, didn’t like him because he was better than every other student. For “This is a great sin, to be born with a head that is too quick (21). In his society, it is frowned upon to be better. He just wanted one pat on the back, or one “good job”. However, he didn’t get either of
At a young age Wes never took a liking to education. When his mother put him in Riverdale School, a prestigious rich school in the Bronx, Wes refrained himself from taking the opportunity of receiving a good education. Therefor His mother gathered thousands of dollars from friends and family to pay for Military school at Valley Forge. Her intention was to allow Wes to take education seriously, and expose himself to new enviorments besides the brutality in the Bronx. To steer him away from a life of crime, and creat a bright future. At Military school Wes attempted to escape but was caught. Right then he realized he couldn’t escape and needed to choose what was best for him. He applied to a college named Johns Hopkins, had internships with Mayor Schmoke, and was not only accepted but also received scholarship money. Wes was now going in the right direction, as well became more than appreciative his mother intervened in his life. “I was lucky to to have supportive, encouraging people to help guide me.” “Hard work is essential, but you also need people around you who believe you can make it.” (p.101) All his mentors, Mayor Schmoke, his mother, Military school etc. steered him to a successful life to this day, and made him see the reality of how having an education, and mentors goes a long
Through out the movie you see difficulties that the students are trying to finally fit to be part of the system but they still may not be accepted because of their classes. With low achieving school, have a suspicious amount of high test scores the reliability and dependability are questioned. Conflict theory is used that the struggle in society and schools between the haves and have nots. For example, not funding for computer, not having computers, no air conditioning for summer and less opportunities for students in general. The school is portrayed as a place where students do not want to be or care about being in school. The staff don’t care about the students especially they gave up on them. There is a quote that I got from the movie, that Mr. Escalante was asking the math department for calculus
While reading Too Cool for School by Ellis Cose I have became aware of various aspects of my ‘schooling’ experience. I realized that I may not have had the best schooling experience, but I never pushed up against the system to get any better. Throughout my life I have attended over 10 schools some very high end others bottom of the barrel. Like Cose, I always knew my intellectual abilities, but I was always so dissatisfied with my situation I didn't make the best of it. Instead of soaking up as much knowledge as possible and making a lesson out of my situation I became complacent. I started to slack off and allow myself to become stagnant to what I knew my abilities were. I allowed myself to be a product of my environment when I should I have
Although many critics within the academic world will oppose by saying that character and self-esteem are taught through academia, I firmly reject that stance as a child’s first point of contact in terms of socialization is at home, with one’s family and community. This means that a child is first taught, at home, the character traits that will help him excel regardless of the impact school has on him.
