When the first settlers arrived to America they weren't ready for the challenges they were going to come across. Even though they had to start a new life they were brave and didn't let anyone get in the their way. When the pilgrims came across the Atlantic in the Mayflower they didn't have enough food or water for the whole trip. The pilgrims had to learn new things and be brave when they arrived to America. William Penn, an English entrepreneur, had an unforeseen impact on the history of the United States of America. Penn had been already a champion for democracy, religious freedom, and anti-slavery movements. Through his good relations with both the common people of England and the Indians of Pennsylvania, Penn was able to secure an entire state for many years to come. So that people could escape persecution for their religious beliefs, have more freedom, and have a good relationship with the Indians.

William Penn was born and raised in England, but he is well known for what he did in the Americas. First and foremost, William Penn was a religious nonconformist and writer: he wrote numerous religious books over his lifetime. Second, Penn is responsible for the “holy experiment”: the colony of Pennsylvania. He was a Quaker advocate, and as a proprietor had the opportunity to practice the Quaker Peace testimony.

In the 18th century, there was a huge migration of people from Europe and Germany into the new land, America. Some fled war, discrimination, some came in as slaves, and others migrated in search of a new beginning, and new opportunities. In “Letter Sent from Philadelphia”, I particularly reveled in the fact that the politicians were only serving for the good of the community for a year’s period and then return home to tend to their personal affairs. William Penn and the twelve justices would be a sight for our country in these desperate times of career politicians. It intrigued me that Germantown had their own separate court system than that of Philadelphia. The local inhabitants of Germantown had no real interaction, except for some trade with the native Americans, because William Penn had paid them a sum of money to resettle outside of the Germantown area.

Whether by land or by sea, eighteenth century colonial travel was arduous, expensive, and many times dangerous. Because of this, few people traveled very far from their homes. Transportation has changed dramatically since the late 1700’s. It was during this time that Colonial America was budding as a new country. This was before airplanes, which appeared in the very early stages of the 1900’s. Cars showed up about the same time, so rewind about 200 plus years and we’re back in colonial America. Not many people could afford the cost of travel back then. Daily American Colonial Life was extremely harsh for the first settlers and colonists. They were faced with a new country, unknown territory and no friends, relatives or neighbors to help them “In those days, it was fairly expensive to travel. Because of this, generally only government officials, merchants, and planters took the risk (Constitution Facts).” Women were supposed to stay home and look after the children while the husband went off to do business. America was still a budding country, so there were not as many cities as there are now and they were more spread out. This book was written with such close attention to detail that it gave the reader a sense of what life was like on board a slave boat.
