Background Statement Never in a million years did I plan on joining Greek life in college. When I got to school I quickly decided that I wanted to be more involved and help make a difference in people’s lives. I decided to rush a sorority which happened to be Delta Gamma. Delta Gamma has provided me with so many wonderful opportunities to make a difference. When the Whited family reached out to our chapter here at IUP I knew this would be something I would remember doing for years to come. The Whited family came to one of our chapter meetings and we got to meet little Lochlan who touched all of our hearts. I have had so many wonderful opportunities from this organization already and have received such great experience by joining …show more content…
Having philanthropy events has always been one of my favorite things about Greek life. Whether it is attending other sorority or fraternities’ events or being apart of our own. Delta Gamma holds two main events for Service for Sight each year. In the fall we have Anchor Slam which is a three on three basketball tournament where sororities and fraternities come out to compete against one another. In the spring we held Anchor Splash which is a synchronized swimming event with many different relay races. This year we had the Whited family come and speak on their behalf. They explained how Lochlan was diagnosed with CRB1 and how he will eventually loose his eyesight completely. This story touched a lot of students, faculty, and families that attended our philanthropy. We made Lochlan our featured anchor man and tried to raise as much money as possible for the family. This event was very successful and we raised over 1,800 dollars to give to the family. Each year Delta Gamma has a founder’s day. Founder’s day was held this year at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana PA. We celebrated our 35 years on IUP’s campus as Delta Gamma’s. Many old alumnae came and celebrated with us at a formal dinner. This year we invited the Whited family to come and talk about the struggles their family has been experiencing with their son Lochlan. The alumnae wanted to raise money for this family and passed around a basket and they donated over 500 dollars for the retinal
However, if you are looking to be more connected on your college campus and to automatically belong to a sense of community, joining a sorority is the perfect fit for you. Delta Gamma claims its mission is to “foster ideals of friendship among women”, and it is fairly clear through the public discourse, as well as the discourse meant specifically for Delta Gamma’s, that community and friendship is something that is cherished within the organization. Joining a sorority means that you are a part of traditions that have been around for decades, thus being connected to something bigger than yourself. A sorority isn’t just something you do for your four years in college, but it is something that you use as a networking tool and a bond of friendship for as long as you live. It also means having a forever snow cone run partner, new opportunities to plug yourself into, and girls who are always there to comment how good you look on your Instagram photos. Those these things may seem infantile, they are super important and go a long way in making you feel like you are at home at your university, and that is the exact goal of any sorority. If any of this sounds appealing to you, there should be no hesitation in
Throughout my exploratory essay, I found that there are many different perspectives when it comes to Greek life. I as a member of Greek life myself, feel that the positive aspects outweigh the negative. There are many positive advantages that come from being a part of Greek life. There are an abundance of networking opportunities that come from Greek life along with all of the incredible friends that you make throughout the recruitment experience. One may also gain leadership skills from being a member of the executive council and having to lead their chapter on a day to day basis. Being a member of Greek life also pushes you to be more involved on campus as well as in the community. Each Greek organization has a philanthropy that they support
By allowing himself to be open to others, he is able to being an icon of this organization to those in need. While he stood out in many events, one that clearly illustrates his kindness was during a Headliners event, where he was not even a member, but he stepped up in their time of need when they were short of volunteers, and with a smile, he picked up supplies, and stayed for the whole event until tear down. This goodwill shows the investment he has in helping others and shows the love in what he calls “home:” Campus Events and Entertainment.
Delta Zeta, 2017, described their sorority as different, always there for each other, and a support system. Individual members said, “my favorite part are the friends I have made,” “they are so strange, but they are the best,” and “people who don’t expect me to be something I’m not” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3MfD6lvt3w).
Greek Organizations have been an influence of college life for many years. Typically there are two sections of the Greek System, social organizations and the profession organizations. Along with the parties and alcohol that is associated with Greek Organizations, they do many other more positive things. They participate in charity events, community service, and volunteering for needy people. Alongside the positives of Greek Organizations, there is always a downfall. For instance, dues and fees are required which is typically a lot of money out of your college student bank account. There are many things that take place in a fraternity or sorority that people don’t consider when they are eager to join. You are required to follow many steps in the process of being accepted into an organization. To start, you
Louis Area, Missouri With Gamma Iota Chapter, Washington Univ. (St. Louis), in its backyard, members of the Greater St. Louis Area Alumnae Association realized they wanted to expand their network of support to other Missouri chapters. As vice president of my school's NHS chapter, I am an advocate for good causes. Our service project this year is a substantial charitable endeavor. In 1996, a fellow NHS member and friend lost a sibling to SIDS. To assist his family's fight for a cure, our chapter initiated a fundraiser. Tee-shirt sales raised thousands of dollars; a ceremony at a football game advertised our cause to the community; our slogan “Big Steps for Baby Steps” galvanized the school; a partnership with the CJ Foundation for SIDS legitimized our efforts with sponsors. Each of the school's clubs and teams has dedicated itself to the cause. A 5k in May is our culminating event. Uniting an entire school and community behind such a worthy cause is gratifying. The Udall S.U.N Club is an amazing organization that focuses on the community’s needs. Every first Saturday of every month they meet in a local spot in our town and cook a community breakfast for the whole town. This organization is a non-profit organization because every penny they make goes into the groceries they get once a month to feed the community. Their mission statement includes “serving Udall’s needs” and that is exactly what they do each month. I have had an amazing opportunity to be able to provide my services to this amazing organization for the past few months and it has been an eye-opener to see how these people dedicate their time and hard work to see a smile on someone else’s face. I have learned so much through this organization.
On the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated celebrated its Founders’ Day by completing hundreds of community service projects to include a Day of Service at the Perot Museum for the MLK holiday and February’s Discovery Days: Gadgets & Gizmos. The historically black sorority that is part of the “Divine 9” declared 2017 the Global Year of Service. The new year also began their official count toward completing 20 million service hours between now and Founders’ Day 2020.

When I decided to sign up for recruitment, I was worried balancing an organization and college classes could be difficult. After I joined Greek Life, I learned many academic opportunities Greek Life offers. For example, Joining Greek life as a Freshman, I did not know that members must have a certain GPA to become and stay an active member. This kept me motivated in school to keep being a part of Greek life. My sisters that were older members gave me a lot of useful study tips. For example, they told me I could go to the writing center for free tutoring. I went there for every essay I wrote for my English class, then next semester for my physics class, and I still go time to time for my classes currently. The current academic chair in my sorority,
Some activities are annual; however, others are develop in order to face a current need at that time. One activity of the sort was the Jared Eubanks Cancer Research fundraiser. Our brother, Jared Eubanks passed away from liver cancer last fall, which was a devastating blow to the hearts of the community; however, this terrible loss presented the opportunity to show just how much unity and a love for Christ that the brotherhood of Sigma Iota Delta has. On Saturday, February 13th, was able to take to sell t-shirts for cancer awareness, while watching the women’s basketball team pull out an exciting victory over out inter-conference rival, North Florida. In addition, Sigma Iota Delta hosts annual events as well. Goatfest is a 2nd annual event that was an instance success through hard work and dedication put forth by the club. the men’s social club held live music and goats in the quad that Thursday night. The event had students performing, a moon bounce, nine square, food and even a mini petting zoo. While all the fun and entertainment was happening, a greater purpose was being served. Goatfest raised nearly $2000 for an organization known as Open Table Nashville (OTN). OTN, a local non-profit organization that works towards putting an end to cycles of poverty, works with the poor and provides education for the homeless, and also served as a drug and alcohol awareness event. The passion of this fraternity and its priority of service contributes to its ultimate goal of showing a love for
I hope you all are having a great start to your semester! Greek Week tables have been looking awesome and I am so excited to be working with all of your chapters!
I assumed one of the main reasons was to become closely connected to a group of people during my college career. Through being connected with a limited amount of people, I thought that the groups would almost immediately become lifelong friends. After the members join, I imagined the lifelong friendship soon will become a meaningless phrase because they will refer to themselves as a sisterhood or brotherhood. After doing a lot of research, I found that all of my predictions were not too far from the truth as to why people want to become a part of the Greek life. I also found that I want to join for many other reasons including the housing benefits, the atmosphere, and the incredible opportunities provided. I thought that I might join to get away from the crazy college students, but rather found that I will join to actually become united with these students. The house I choose will be the Greek honor society provided it is available to me. Inside the honors house, I will find new friends that will become my sisters that can assist me. If I consider the Greek life, I should do a little research to figure out if the Greek experience will match my personal life. If I am asked for my opinion, I will definitely say to join the society and then enjoy it as much as possible. Although there are negatives attached to the Greek system, I believe the positive attributes
