What the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the government cannot compel a government employee to self-criminate themselves. What the court also ruled was, the police department had no right to terminate those individuals who decided to use their fifth amendment right (Justia, 2016). The court had asserted that “the option to lose their means of livelihood or pay the penalty of self-incrimination is the antithesis of free choice to speak or to remain silent. (Taylor, 2009). Dollree Mapp V. State of Ohio case was brought in front of the Supreme Court in March 1961. After this disturbance occurred with local police officers and in wrongful search of the Dollree home, it brought huge attention on how Americans were being violated of their privacy more often then one would imagine. Since Mapp vs. Ohio was a turning point in our nation’s history due to the facts in this particular case, the changes in our legal system by the forming of the exclusionary rule, and the decision made following the action of officers in the wrong, America is a better place.
Frequent crimes brought to the Suffolk County Court were breaking church law, such as, being found “guilty of the profanation of ye Lord’s day” or “absenting themselves from publique worship of god on the Sabbath dayes”. Also, things such as cursing, drinking, or gathering in groups outside of the church were brought to court as crimes. Alice Thomas was found guilty of “secret and unseasonable Entertainment in her house to Lewd Lascivious & notorious persons of both sexes, giving them the opportunity to commit carnal wickedness”. There were also a few cases that involved violence of some type to a spouse or another person. The preferred method of punishment seemed to be corporal punishment by lashing, “to bee whipt with fifteen Stripes”. While most were to pay fines, and wait in prison for their punishment it appears that there wasn’t such thing as jail time. They preferred to punish the offender quite publically, most likely to serve as an example, and sometime with humiliation. Making one man wear a sign that read “A Prophane & Wicked Slanderd & Impious Reviler of a minister of the Gosple & Church-member”.

This is the most common type of marriage we see in the United States today. You’ve seen it, and you are most likely in one of these: the man and woman decide to get married, and in order to make it “official,” they apply for a marriage license, they exchange vows in front of a representative of the state – justice of the peace or preacher - who verifies that said vows were exchanged and the government says, “ok, they’re married now”. The government gives the permission for the marriage to take place and then gives its okay to the union.
Because you are already married, some things are different. For example, you do not need a marriage license or a clergyman. You can simply state your vows, or a relative can read your vows.
