There were many issues that created the Great Schism between the east and west, both prior to 1054 and after. It would appear from the document that the east had more issues with how the west governed the church. The split could probably have been avoided as well as its consequences. The Great Schism had many consequences two of which were the Eastern Orthodox's trying to tell the Roman Catholic how to run the church and the Roman Catholics attacking the Eastern Orthodox church with religion. Before the split of 1054, the Roman Catholic Church or Western church and the Eastern Orthodox Church or Byzantine church were almost one with each other. The two churches held the same ideals and got along with one another the majority of the time. They had previous splits in the past but they were never a permanent situation because they usually found a solution to their issues and differences. The split between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church in 1054 seemed to have no resolution when their theological, political, and cultural differences became too much for them to harmonize upon.
None the less the Papacy was now divide. The saying "United we stand, while divided we fall." is very valid in this instance. The church is having many problems around this time period and many people are converting, or shale we say shifting, to other forms or Christianity. Whereas before these problems occurred the church was the central power in Western Europe and had great influence over the governments in their sphere of power. This event, the schism, caused a split in the Catholic Church and divided countries among the two popes. "Everyone realized that the schism resulting from the counter-election of Cardinal Robert of Geneva as Pope Clement VII . . . was a tragedy for the church . . ."
The Great Papal Schism is also known as the Western Schism that lasted from 1378 – 1417, during which the papacy (the position itself) was in great divide between three popes in the Roman Catholic Church. This political upheaval within the Roman Catholic Church caused distrust of the western civilization towards the church. It began after the Avignon Papacy or the more commonly referred to, “Babylonian captivity of the papacy” which was when the papal court was moved to France and French cardinals who later became popes from 1309-1378 resided in Avignon, France (a total of seven French popes by the papal names Clement V all the way to Gregory XI, who moved the court back to Rome) while being heavily influenced by the French kings; this also resulted to the decline of the papal power and authority (Miller, Study.com).
The Second Great Awakening revolved around the new concept of national reform through religious and moral changes. These changes and transitions occurred for the benefit of the country, by withdrawing the negative aspects of society such as alcohol overuse, low quality education and prisons, and most notably slavery. Religious leaders encouraged salvation and worshipping the Christian God to be best solution for successfully reforming and improving the nation’s predicaments. Religious ideas had a remarkable role constructing reform movements in the first half of the nineteenth century in behalf of religion offering the most moral and logical path towards a better society. People of the United States were in necessity of reforms, applying the religious ideas opened up new resolutions for all classes, races, and groups of people.
After 1815, a women’s status in society was shaped both by the “market revolution” and the “Second Great Awakening”. The “market revolution” was a drastic change in the nation's economy through transportation, education, legal reforms. Examples of these reforms would include the creation of canals, roads, railroads, and the technology needed to commute between places, an increase in teacher wages, school terms, and curriculum, and the spreading awareness of massive movements such as the temperance, abolitionist, and prison reform movement. The “Second Great Awakening” was a revival of religious spirit that attracted social minorities, such as women, African-Americans,and native Americans, that produced many new sects of Protestantism, such

The devastating effect of the Crusades coupled with the spread of the Black Plague launched a changing public view of papal authority. This resulted in a more analytical mindset creating a foothold for the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution . An overtly secular focus took precedence over religious matters and the moral decay of the Church was called into question. This obsession of secular control is most clearly exemplified by the Great Schism that took place from 1378 to 1417 . The Great Schism was the result of the Babylonian Captivity, in which the papacy was forced to relocate to Avignon . Soon after returning to Rome, conflict arose within the papacy resulting in three popes fighting for the title. “When the Council of Constance unified the papacy in 1417 with the election of Martin V, the pope’s political authority outside of the

When the British fought in the French and Indian War it put them in great debt. In order to get out of the enormous debt they taxed the colonies. The reactions of the colonists were sometimes harsh. They argued they had no representation in Parliament so they tarred and feathered, burned effigies, raided tax collectors, and boycotted British goods. Some of the acts they passed were the Sugar and Coercive Acts. They both angered the colonists tremendously. The Acts passed by the British caused tensions and many reactions from the colonists.
Sectionalism was a big problem after the War of 1812. According to document 1, Congress should only have power to regulate commerce, and not raise taxes to raise revenue. It basically shows the economic differences between the two regions; northern factories vs. southern farmers. It shows how farmers are becoming poor while manufacturers are becoming wealthy. The Tariff of Abominations was laid to protect northern industries in the US, which were being driven out of business by low-priced imported goods. The Tariff of 1816 however protected the American manufacturing from British competition. The map in document 5, illustrates that the population was greater in the northeast than the south and west. Also, the population in the north was because of industry and immigration. The west was still being settled down. Henry Clay’s, American System, was the most historically significant examples of a government-sponsored program to balance the nations agriculture, commerce, and industry. It reinforced a tariff to protect and promote American industry. This is why the north had much more population because it was industrialized. In document 2, John C. Calhoun tells us that rapid industrialization would lead to the division of the North, South, and West. Building more roads and canals, methods of transportation, would encourage offsetting disunion. He fears sectionalism but thinks that binding the regions would bring nationalism. The American System, reinforced
In 1763, the British and the colonists emerged victorious from the Seven Years’ War after the signing of peace terms at Paris, granting Britain a colonial empire in North America and an end to control of North American lands by the French and groups of Native Americans. These similarities did not last long, however. On October 7, 1763, Parliament passed the Proclamation of 1763, prohibiting colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains, a frontier which the colonists believed they could explore after defending and securing a New World empire. This angered the colonists, and their bitterness toward their mother country would become significantly stronger over the following twelve years leading up to the inception of war with Britain.
