Courage is what gives ordinary people the ability to become more than just ordinary. It is what gives men the ability to go off to war against unfathomable enemies and fight monsters of untold fright without fleeing or cowering. Courage is the most basic tool used by great men. The elves tell Frodo that courage is found in unlikely places, but what does this actually mean? Courage is already in everyone, but some have it in larger amounts than others. Frodo has courage, but he does not know it yet. The fears and dangers he has faced already have proven his courage already, but the upcoming fear and danger will be greater than anything anyone has ever faced. Courage is found everywhere for all different things for all different reasons. Some find courage while others learn it over time by exercising it. What the elves are saying is that they are always surprised to find large amounts of courage in the most feeble and meek people. These people find courage, sometimes very quickly or immediately, while others might take years to learn it. A hardened soldier might be frightened before going into battle against an easy opponent, but another man might suddenly pick up a sword and go off to war against an undefeatable foe without a second thought to save his family. Courage starts out as a seed in every person, but it will grow with unknown speed. …show more content…
His friends give him courage. Without his friends in the Barrow, he might have fled in fear, instead of standing up with courage against the barrow-Wight. They are not aware of it yet, but these tiny hobbits will fight in legendary battles against absurd odds, but they will not be alone, they will have friends beside them to help each other out. They will use each other as a crutch when facing debilitating fear. None of them could do it alone, and luckily, they don’t have
Depending on the person, the idea of courage has many different meanings. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird's, the definition of courage is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (149). The novels definition explains that one needs to do the right thing even if one doesn’t win.
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” ~ Winston Churchill. This quote defines what it is to be courageous, to be courageous is to persevere even if you know you will fail. This kind of courage is the courage which both Harold Crick in Stranger Than Fiction and Jean Louise “Scout” Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird. In Stranger Than Fiction, an IRS agent, Harold Crick, with a monotonous life learns that you must not only survive, but you must truly live. This lesson is taught through a series of events that lead to his breaking out of his shell and truly living his life. The events are preliminarily put into action through Harold hearing the voice of the author of a book about his life. In To Kill A Mockingbird, a tomboyish six-year-old, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, discovers the true meaning of camaraderie and bravery. Her friendships are strong but her definition of courage is flawed. In the end, she realizes a great truth, that to really know someone, you have to imagine yourself in their shoes. Courage is important to these two characters, as they both discover what it really means to be brave and what the true definition of courage is. Courage is not always outspoken, sometimes courage is knowing that you will fail, but trying and failing anyway and then accepting your failure.
Courage is the ability to stand up for ones beliefs and ethics that the Army has been bestowed on them, despite the danger they may face on duty. Courage is as stated in The New International Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language to be “the capacity to meet danger or difficulty with firmness.” In my mind courage has always meant doing what you had to do, and dealing with it because you had to. I never had a choice in my life whether I wanted to move to a different city
William Shakespeare once said, "For courage mounteth with occasion." William Shakespeare is portraying that courage comes when it is needed most. Shakespeare also displays that courage makes up for the strength that is absent in arduous situations. I agree with Shakespeare's message he is conveying in entirety. In the novels, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the courageous acts are like one lone star lighting up the entire night sky.
Courage is not facing a problem without any fear. Courage is facing an obstacle despite their fear. Standing up for what they believe in, even though there will be negative consequences. That is true courage. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee does a great job of showing this.
The word courage has been tossed around for centuries. From Christopher Columbus to Drake. The definition is knowing that something scares the living daylights out of you, but facing it anyway. The thing is, there are many different ways to look at courage. For example, perhaps a book about courage. Let's take The Schwa Was Here by Neal Shusterman. The book relates to courage because it show many examples of it by explaining some dares, challenges and messes two kids, one half Invisible, go through. The main person who shows courage is The Schwa, because he has to listen to a bothersome story, sneak into a cranky mans house, even though the whole town is scared of it, and gets in trouble with airport security.
Oxford defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage isn’t necessarily being strong, or doing something that other don't want to do, it can be small acts, such as swimming in the ocean even though sharks are feared. Courage is having the ability to overcome a fear, no matter how big or small it is. In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch, Scout Finch, and Boo Radley all display courage.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt famously once said, “The only thing to fear is fear itself”. What Roosevelt really meant by saying this is that the fear we have for something or someone will only make it worse. Courage, most often times, can be defined by the actions that someone makes as a result to something that they fear. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main characters, Atticus, Scout, and Jem, face many fearful obstacles in which they have to overcome their fears to move through them. Although many readers may believe that Jem displays the most courage, Atticus is the one who truly displays the most courage due to the fact that he had to face many difficult tasks in the courtroom and at home. Despite all the hatred he received
In life, courage is the best way to find peace in chaotic and unfamiliar situations. In J.R.R Tolkien’s famous book, The Hobbit, Tolkien addresses this issue through the adventurers of Bilbo. Tolkien believes that courage is one of the most important attributes and courage can overcome all fears.
Braveness is something kings and leaders have. Braveness doesn’t come with everyone only certain individuals have bravery. Beowulf has bravery” he purges all evil from this hall”. He takes them
Courage or the act of being courageous is something that can depict if a person is being weak. This act ties into the classic tale when identifying the strength it took Sundiata to walk. Sundiata was at an age where other young boys were gathering objects for their mothers and he simply could not, due to the fact that he was unable to walk. However, “In a great effort he straightened up and was on his feet at one go, but the great bar of iron was twisted and had taken the form of a bow.” (Page 21) A boy who once couldn't walk was now walking. He who once had to depend on his mother can now be the one his mother depends on. Thus, “ When Sogolon saw her son standing she stood dumb for a moment, then suddenly she sang these words of thanks to god who had given her son the use of his legs”. (Page 21) Sogolon was so discouraged to the point where the sight of her son’s slow development became an embarrassment. She soon became joyful of the courage

Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that particular risk. Courage can occur anytime, anywhere, and often in our everyday lives. Everyone will experience courage no matter how young,
Courage is a trait shared by Beowulf and King Arthur or “Wart”. Beowulf showed courage through the many battles he fought . Beowulf went to Heorot in hopes of defeating Grendel, the monster that had been attacking Herot for the last twelve years. This was courageous because he knew that he could be killed, but he fought anyway because that's what he needed to do. Wart showed courage when he pulled the sword out of the stone. He did not want to be King of England, let alone at such a young age. He wanted to put the sword back in the stone or let someone else become King. Wart was courageous and became King because he knew that was his duty. These examples show that courage
