Greece, located in the Southern Europe and has a very irregular-shaped peninsula, it is surrounded to the east by the Aegean Sea, to the west by the Ionian Sea, and to the south by the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is also located between Africa, Asia and Europe which makes it very attractive and strategic destination. Greece gained its independence in 1830 from The Ottoman Empire and over the years has gone through a various number transformation from the Ancient Greece to the Republic of Greece. Its capital Athens is located in the heart of the country and has kept most of its landmarks since the 5th century. Greece joined the European Union in June 2001, has suffered a severe economic crisis in 2009 and recently agreed on its third bailout valued at$96 Billion.
Greece is also known as Hellenic Republic, the first country in Europe to advance civilization, Greece is one of the most visited country in Europe locate in southern Europe near Albania, Turkey, Bulgaria, and Rep. Macedonia.
Ancient Greek culture had major influences on today’s culture; some of these influences include mathematics, government, art and architecture; they even did research in the field of medicine. Many cultures and religions have adapted their ideas from the ancient Greeks. Without the influences of the ancient Greeks our society wouldn’t be the way it is today. The Greek culture lasted from around 776 BCE to 146 BCE (though it is argued to have begun around 1000 BCE), during this time they invented many technologies and refined old technologies. These things are what caused the ancient Greek culture to be such a powerful influence on western society today.
The taste of fresh figs and grapes from the farm, the sound of the church bell ringing at 11 am, the smell of the sea from a mile away, these are some things that remind me of my Greek heritage. My household has always been very culturally diverse. My mother left Greece for the United States to establish greater opportunities for me and my siblings. However, she has always raised us in a household that mimics the traditional Greek ethics of the one she grew up in. Juggling physics homework and my mother yelling in Greek to help fix her new phone is a common occurrence in my daily life. This may seem like a frustrating event to some, but I love when my mother speaks in Greek. It takes me back to my childhood summers when my grandparents, aunts,
The Greek civilization contributed greatly to the development of modern Western culture. Three of the most important contribution that are the foundations of our society are Language, Philosophy, and Government.
Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, historically also known as Hellas, is a country in southeastern Europe, with a population of approximately 11 million as of 2015. Athens is the nation's capital and largest city, followed by Thessaloniki. Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula, it shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the northeast. Greece consists of nine geographic regions: Macedonia, Central Greece, the Peloponnese, Thessaly, Epirus, the Aegean Islands, Thrace, Crete, and the Ionian Islands. The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea
The soil was so hard, rocky, and mountainous that there was a Greek legend that says that God when making the Earth put each country through a strainer and that the rocks left in the strainer became Greece. This layout of Ancient Greece made it extremely hard for the Greeks to travel by land which eventually led them to sailing. Another negative of the geography of Ancient Greece was the unpredictable volcano eruptions and earthquakes. As stated in Document 3 the volcano eruptions were common because Greece is right in the middle of a very active volcanic zone where the Europe and Africa tectonic plates meet. Volcanoes have been so bad that according to Document 3 in 1450 B.C half of Santorini Island was sunken into the sea after a volcano eruption that destroyed the whole island’s
Did you know that Greeks wave with the back of their hand facing out, instead of in? This is just one of many interesting facts about Greece. Greece is 50,949 square miles, which is around the size of Alabama. They have a president and a Prime Minister as their main government positions, and 98% of their population is Christian Orthodox, which is influenced through the Prime Minister. Also, Greeks love their food. Therefore, amazing whole made food is daily produced for many festivals, which makes it a huge tourist attraction. Greece is very mountainous and dry, but does get anywhere from 20-40 inches of rain a year. And finally, if you're ever planning a trip to Greece, May is the best month to go, because they get only 1.5 centimeters of
“Greek civilization is alive; it moves in every breath of mind that we breathe; so much of it remains that none of us in one lifetime could absorb it all.” Ancient Greeks are known to be one of the greatest and most advanced people and have left behind a legacy that helped define the Western civilization. Cultural diffusion helped spread Greek culture all over the world, and its effects can still be felt today in almost every aspect. Greek culture has greatly affected different parts of my daily life including architecture, food, government, inventions, music, religion, and education.
Greek's history and culture are intimately related to the landscape. Continental Greece is practically a mountain range that sinks in the Aegean Sea, whose numerous islands are not more than the summits of this submerged mountain range. But the Greek landscape, being important, does not help on its own to explain the wonderful Greek cultural legacy. Rationalism as an attitude to life, the consideration of man as a measure of all things, the love of beauty and a high aesthetic sense or democracy as a political system, are spiritual values present in our world. Furthermore, Athens.
Greece is a continent located in Europe that over 130,647 square kilometer. The language of Greece is Modern Greek. The capital is Athens which is also the political center of Greece. Greece also has many customs and traditions throughout their culture. Many of their customs are similar to that in the USA.
The geography of the city-states in the Hellenic world or what you now call Greece is quite interesting. Greece contains over 2000 islands as well as the Greek mainland. The temperature
(Aegean to the East and Ionian to the West) but is also highly mountainous in the mainland. The major mountain ranges of the Balkans end up in Greece, dividing the country in mesas, plateaus, and small valleys. Greece, being the southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula, is surrounded by two major seas. The seas of Greece are probably it most important Geographical feature but we cannot forget the 6,000 islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which only 227 islands are inhabited. I found that out at Visit Greece!
Santorini is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The island is also known as Thera, the English pronunciation of the island’s historical Greek name for the island “Thira”. Approximately 3500 years ago a series of volcanic eruptions devastated the island, its inhabitants and other Mediterranean Bronze Age civilizations1. The significance of these eruptions and their aftermath is that they had a severe environmental impact and may have led to the collapse of Bronze Age Mediterranean civilizations; moreover it may have been one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. This has led to some labelling the event as catastrophic. Figure 1 is a map of the Greece in the Aegean Sea. Santorini is located within a group of islands known as the Cyclades3. Due south of
John Locke, an English philosopher from the 17th century, said a primary purpose of government to protect people’s natural rights of life, liberty, and property. What John Locke meant by life is that all people she be guarded from all harm. Liberty meant that all people have the right to have freedom and not be enslaved or imprisoned. What he meant by property was that all people have the right to own things and not have them destroyed. Greece is located in the continent of Europe, south of Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria
