For this week, we only had one reading which was “Grounds of War: The Evolution of Territorial Conflict” by Dominic D.P. Johnson and Monica Duffy Toft. These two authors focused their writing on territorialism and how that affects wars. They noted that territorialism is seen in many animals when the resource/territory is considered worth the energy it takes to fight for it. They also noted that in most of these “fights” there is no actual harm or death right away. It may eventually escalate to that, but rarely does it start this way. They also noted that animals can be territorial without being innately aggressive about it. They even when it depth to explain who will win in a war/fight over territory. It is odd to think that something such as a dog protecting its food bowl and a human fighting over what they believe to be their holy land could be driven by the same basic extincts. They are simply protecting a scarce resource that they believe to be theirs and if anyone else took that, then they would feel as though they would get less of it. Often times, we try to justify our actions and our wars by using these profound ideas, but in reality we are no better than two dogs fighting over the same bone. I also really liked the part in the reading that discussed how maps are a perfect form of evidence for this territorialism. When you think about it, why does it matter where Minnesota ends and Wisconsin begins? Why does it matter who owns what? Truly, besides taxes and what not, it doesn’t matter. If we did not care about who owned what, then maybe we could live in peace, but that does not seem to be a reality. Instead, we fight for our land and to take land. However, these maps help us not take possession over land that it not ours by keeping us within our own
