For this week, we only had one reading which was “Grounds of War: The Evolution of Territorial Conflict” by Dominic D.P. Johnson and Monica Duffy Toft. These two authors focused their writing on territorialism and how that affects wars. They noted that territorialism is seen in many animals when the resource/territory is considered worth the energy it takes to fight for it. They also noted that in most of these “fights” there is no actual harm or death right away. It may eventually escalate to that, but rarely does it start this way. They also noted that animals can be territorial without being innately aggressive about it. They even when it depth to explain who will win in a war/fight over territory. All of this is very interesting because …show more content…
It is odd to think that something such as a dog protecting its food bowl and a human fighting over what they believe to be their holy land could be driven by the same basic extincts. They are simply protecting a scarce resource that they believe to be theirs and if anyone else took that, then they would feel as though they would get less of it. Often times, we try to justify our actions and our wars by using these profound ideas, but in reality we are no better than two dogs fighting over the same bone. I also really liked the part in the reading that discussed how maps are a perfect form of evidence for this territorialism. When you think about it, why does it matter where Minnesota ends and Wisconsin begins? Why does it matter who owns what? Truly, besides taxes and what not, it doesn’t matter. If we did not care about who owned what, then maybe we could live in peace, but that does not seem to be a reality. Instead, we fight for our land and to take land. However, these maps help us not take possession over land that it not ours by keeping us within our own
War is a dangerous game, many people would likely agree to this, however, very few have ever seen a battlefront. The truth is that war, no matter how awful we can imagine it, is always exponentially worse. In Timothy Findley’s The Wars, Robert Ross, the protagonist, faces a situation that he finds difficult to come to terms with, and when faced with a similar situation later on in the novel, he must take drastic measures to reconcile the uncertainties of the past situation. Timothy Findley suggests, through the life of Robert Ross, that one’s need to reconcile the uncertainties of past experiences dominate our actions when such situations come up again in our lives. In the words of Hiram Johnson, a US Senator during the First World War,
Environmental history explores a variety of topics in order to connect nature to humans. In doing so, a new history emerges. As this history unveils itself, it becomes evident that throughout time, humans have taken it upon themselves to improve the nonhuman world for their own gains. Numerous scholars have contemplated this idea, and while they do not all agree on the meaning or the means of improvement upon the land, it remains a constant theme. By exploring the theme of improvement to land, a clear path forms. The idea of improvement in environmental history creates artificial agency for humans, as well as revealing that improvement cannot happen without having an adverse effect on humans.
Ground operations began on the night of 7 November 2004. Attacking from the west and south, the Iraqi 36th Commando Battalion with their U.S. Army Special Forces advisers and the U.S. Marine Corps Scout Platoon, 1st and 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment (Manchu), 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division (U.S. Army), 3rd Platoon Alpha Company 2/72nd Tank Battalion (U.S. Army), and 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, reinforced by Bravo Company from the Marine Corps Reserve's 1st Battalion, 23rd Regiment, and supported by Combat Service Support Company 113, from Combat Service Support Battalion 1, captured Fallujah General Hospital, Blackwater Bridge, ING building, and villages opposite of the Euphrates River along Fallujah's western edge. Troops from the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines fired 81mm mortars in an operation in south Fallujah. The same unit, operating under the command of the U.S.
I believe that land is the reason why the Crusades began. Originally, the Muslims and Christians were fighting over Jerusalem. Both religious groups had a holy and religious connection to the city. Because of this, they both believed that the land of Jerusalem was theirs. They began to fight and over the first several crusades, the land was shifted between the Muslim reign to the Christians. The Jewish people were eventually going to start fighting as well. By then a three way war would have developed. All three religions believed that Jerusalem was holy to them, and therefore the land belonged to them.
An “undeclared war” can be defined as a struggle in which no formal declaration of war is stated by either side in combat. In the United States, this occurs when the president utilizes his powers as commander-in-chief to deploy troops for battle without the consent of Congress. By issuing the order without waiting for a confirmation or rejection from the legislative branch, the president is effectively able to bypass the requirement of Congressional approval for an authorized “war” and commence a pseudo-war of sorts, in which the typical wartime strategies are employed without the official title of a “war” ever being established. One particularly disastrous period in which these conditions were met was during the late twentieth century when John F. Kennedy oversaw the beginning of a Cold War era conflict between the United States and Vietnam. This undeclared war resulted in over 58,000 American casualties and was a major topic of debate amongst both American citizens and members of Congress (Keever, 2013).
From the beginning of time war has been a factor of history. It was not until the application of artillery was the world introduced to what would become known as “The King of Battle”. Artillery is without a doubt the most casualty producing weapons on the battlefield. Able to reach enemies miles away in any direction, artillery has been a pivotal planning factor in war since its inception. World War II was no different, on the early morning of June 6th, 1944 Operation Overlord would pit the US Army Rangers against the king of battle.
Some geographic COCOMs and Combatant Commanders significantly influence U.S. foreign policy in their region which offsets the effectiveness of other instruments of power and sets the perception of military first.
The military has always been a reflection of the American people, as social trends change; the military adapts to reflect these changes. However, change in the military is usually a slow moving process. Many formal and informal actors play crucial roles in creating change in the military, and the repeal of the Ground Combat Exclusion Policy of 1994 was no different. When examining the events that led up to the repeal of the policy, it is clear that it follows John Kingdon’s three streams, problems, politics, and policy format. Due to there being such a clear issue with the current policy within the public eye, it allowed both formal and informal actors to push Politian’s and members of the Department of Defense to act swiftly and repeal the
As a part of the FY17 Future Warfare Study Framework, the HD Concept is revised to provide relevant operational context in order to better identify first-order human performance requirements for Soldier and Team overmatch. This context would help refine the nature and characteristics of future warfare and inform not only our thinking about “How the Army Fights,” but equally important “How Humans
Given that many plants need to be sown and then reaped when fully grown, the metaphorical conceptualization of people as plants may, accordingly, be elaborated to include a reaper, more specifically a conceptualization of death as the Grim Reaper (Lakoff & Turner, 1989, pp. 16, 75):
I agree that Unconventional Warfare (UW) activities support other Special Operations Core Activities. You did mentioned Military Information Support Operations (MISO) during the American Civil War accomplished by guerrilla fighters operating behind enemy lines spreading disinformation to the enemy about troop strength and dispositions, disrupted Federal supply and communication lines, and distracted contingents of troops. I find this interesting and I do wander what other Special Operation Core Activities were employed as well.
If people wanted to know anything about the Guerrilla war or the fighters, they should read this book, despite it not having been written recently, and become enamored with the story of common men; who protect their homeland from foreign invaders, from conquering them, and taking away stuff that makes them, Spanish, and call Spain, their home.
There were several conditions that lead up to the end of the cold war, not the least of which was the Soviet Union’s respect for the economic impact of Strategic Defense System that President Reagan was proposing at the time (Shultz, 2013). When Mikhail Gorbachev took over as Soviet Premier, he and President Reagan were able to come to agreements to reduce nuclear weapons and for the Soviet to pull out of Afghanistan. This lead to the eventual dissolution of the Soviet Union, which was a good thing. However, like everything in life, there are alway unintended consequences. In this case, the void that the pullout of the Soviet Union left in the Middle East became a breeding ground for Hezbollah and for what we now know of as ISIS.
Alternative lifeworld fictions often have a strong grounding in the social and historical context to when they were written. Often they reflect or comment on the world around them based on the author’s own opinions and experiences. When an author creates a social or historic commentary in their novel, they are critiquing or offering an opinion about a past event or time. A reflection is less a comment, but more mirroring a past event in order to encourage consideration.
The assignment I choose to redo as my creative revision was MWA-2. Originally, MWA-2 was an academic essay on the documentary “The Central Park Five”. For my revision, I wanted to do a movie review poster on the documentary “The War You Don’t See”.
