Group Climate In 12 Angry Men

The 1957 film version of 12 Angry Men depicts the nature of a small group setting. Within this film, we can see the group as a system, the development of group climate, and the different roles portrayed in a group. Eleven out of the twelve jurors voted the boy on trial guilty when they were initially asked their vote. Later throughout the movie, the group went into detail on the trail, thanks to Juror 8, and eventually changed their vote. If it weren't for the call for communication on the topic, the boy who was being tried would have been sentenced to death. Juror 2 was the most soft spoken of the group. He plays the role of the newcomer and shows signs of insecurity which leads to him not being taken seriously and is often talked over by the other members. Group climate is defined as being the emotional atmosphere and the enveloping tone that is created by the way we communicate in groups. A factor that plays largely in the film is the literal climate of the room. throughout the entirety of the film, the fact that its is extremely hot is stated multiple times. as the pressure builds and personalities clash, you see the men go from being hot, to literally drenched in sweat. whenever someone makes a personal attack that is out of line, you can notice that the jurors wipe their foreheads. the group climate is becoming to “hot” for some of the jurors to handle. The most noticeable symbol of the heat/group climate is the fan. Throughout the duration of the movie, the fan does not work and things get heated between the jurors. Unnecessary arguments, blatant disrespect, and even threats of violence occur during the time that the fan is off.
