In contrast, the author uses George as a metaphor for those who would fight, kill, and die in the war; this element is an important part of the author’s persuasive strategy. W.D. Howells wants to appeal to the values and the emotional sensibility of his audience, for this reason, Howells portrays George as passive and unsure of himself. George is fearful of the war and he sees no glory in it. He believes that God is peaceful and the idea that God would advocate for war runs counter to George’s belief in peace. In short, the author uses George’s story to illustrate the consequences of war for the reader. This strategy works to persuade a resistant audience to relate to George, hence, lowering their resistance to the anti-war message of this piece.
Henry Fleming is a teenager with romantic notions about the glories of war. He enlists in the Union army and quickly discovers sides of himself he never knew existed. The horrors, boredom, and complete injustice of war bring out all of Henry’s worst (and occasionally best) tendencies.
Upon entering English 111 on-line class, I had not taken an English class on-line before. In the past I have taken several other basic classes. English has always been a struggle for me, mainly writing and grammar. Neither, writing or grammar has come natural to me. The biggest challenge for me is putting my thoughts into words.
What made English 099 easy for me? English 099 was the most stressful class that I took this semester. Being able to write a good essay, to have a good grammar on the essay was very difficult for me. Although English 099 was difficult and stressful, I learned so many new things in class that it became my favorite class. Every day we were learning something new that .There are three papers that professor Hogan gave us that helped me understand English 099, and they are the pink folder, the reading portfolio, and most important the conjunction paper.
English has never been an easy subject for me. It is something that I've needed to work at constantly in order to achieve a grade that I am satisfied by or more likely, my parents are satisfied by. Throughout high school I have been a person who is naturally gifted in mathematics, physics and chemistry. These subjects are straightforward to me because I knew if I worked harder I would obtain a higher grade, but with English it always seemed that even if I put in more effort it wasn't a given that I’d see better results.
English 102 is a college level of reading and writing course based on the theme monster. When I started the class, I thought monsters as scary creature in the books and movies. As I progressed in English 102, I found out monsters is more than what I though t is. Monsters can represent the fear of people and society, a problem in a society, something that is keep coming back and coming back(Such as financial crisis), natural hazard and danger. It also can serve as a warning; so, people avoid the same mistakes.
Do you think Conroe high school should change there rules. I think conroe should change the hat rule to be able to where it in school.
Royalton High School follows a 7 period day schedule, 50 minutes class periods, typically 5 days a week beginning at 8:15am and ending at 3:22pm. A regularly scheduled day consists of seven four minute passing periods and a 15 minute homeroom at the end of the day. Homeroom is not considered as a scheduled class, and even though it is not required, it is still beneficial to many students. The sole purpose of homeroom is to inform students of extracurricular activities, scholarships and college visits, the announcements, and reduce class absences.
Tim O’Brien uses literary devices such as Imagery and repetition to show how conflict affects humanity. It changed the way they think to care for what they have and the time they have with the people they care for. In the book it says “And in the end, of course, a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about special way thar dawn spreads out on a river when you must cross the river and march into the mountain and do things you are afraid to do. It's about love and memory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen” (81). It’s telling us that you should care for what you have and the memories and the sorrows.
It's funny how we have been in the same schools from elementary to high school, but it wasn't until high school when we first started talking to each other and really became friends... Or in my case became "fake friends" during our first two years of high school, that is. Crossly were hesitant to be friends in the begging but manage to continue our friendship through out high school. Anyhow, crazy how things came to be in the end, as close we have gotten and how helpful you been on bringing the best of me in school, especially when we had english class together back in freshman year in high school, believe me, if I wouldn't have chosen english nine and ten honors with you I wouldn't been as proud on my improvement in better developing my english
Conroe High School has many rules. Many are silly and some are actually very important. The one rule I think is silly is being able to get tardies after lunch and it should be changed because some of the Conroe High students eat their lunch in a different room or even a different part of the school, and also the tardies that are possible to get after lunch you can't necessarily get rid of even if it’s because lunch took too long.
For example, Percy Grimm and Miniver Cheevy conflate violence with heroism in order to create an idol upon which to model their lives. Rather than perceiving WWI as a horrible tragedy defined by unnecessary violence and death, Percy “…would never forgive his parents…” (Faulkner 621) for him being “…too young to have been in the European War…” (Faulkner 621). Percy perversely celebrates the war as a gateway to manhood rather. He conjures up a perverted image of a soldier to create a false model to emulate, because he cannot define his purpose in life. Percy’s fight with the ex-soldier “…who made some remark to the effect that if he had to do it again, he would fight this time on the German side…” (Faulkner 621) reflects how Percy rejects reality when creating his heroism narrative of WWI. Percy sees them as gods and experiences jealousy of the idea of being a soldier and having authority, and he reacts with anger when met with a contradictory viewpoint. Similarly, Cheevy overlooks the constant warfare of the Middle Ages and chooses to emphasize “When swords were bright and steeds were prancing/ The vision of a warrior bold/ Would set him dancing” (Robinson l. 6-8). Just as how Percy Grimm views warfare as a joyous occasion, Miniver Cheevy envisions knighthood as a perpetual celebration. This glorification of violence throughout history stems from their personal lack of success and ambition. Percy Grimm and Miniver Cheevy lack a model or goal within their lives, so they attempt to supplement this void by perverting violence within history to fit an image of heroism and grandeur. Robinson conveys this perversion of reality in how Miniver Cheevy “He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot,/ And Priam’s neighbors” (l. 11-12) when trying to imagine knighthood. This conveys that Cheevy’s image of
. ./ When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang/ Upon those boughs which shake against the cold" (1-3). This is a straightforward complaint that, like autumn, the poet is moving gradually into old age, with the winter of death right around the corner. But Shakespeare's description of the tree limbs in their bare autumn dress is key to the whole poem. He calls them "Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang." The barren tree branches are the "choir," or the place where the choir sang. But
On the other hand, the Forest of Arden is a pastoral setting since it contains ideal elements. Helen Gardner concludes in her essay on As You Like It in “Shakespeare the Comedies” that the irony of the play comments that “You have said: but whether wisely or no, let the forest judge” (Gardner 51). To sum it up, Gardner is explaining to the audience that the forest is the most important aspect of the play since it is the main source of change in the characters’ ways. The judging by the forest will conclude to
It has been 10 years since I started learning English. During these 10 years, I have been taught by many English teachers, and all of them helped me a lot in learning English. However, I think my elementary school English teacher, Mrs. Huang, helped me the most on my language development. She helped me start learning English and introduced the basic rules of English to me. Moreover, she motivated my interest in learning English.
