The Rifle Itself Has No Moral Stature: No Need for More Gun Control Laws Jeff Cooper, the creator of the “modern technique” of handgun shooting, an expert on the use and history of small arms, once said, “The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.” People will always have possession of arms, whether they use it for harm or to protect. There is no need to add more gun control laws. Instead, rules should be strongly enforced, specific guns should be banned in certain areas, and lawmakers need to consider people’s reactions. If the laws were tighter, then it will be more difficult to buy a gun, which will help decrease shootings. The laws that we have now are pretty good, but there are too many loopholes. Adding extra rules will not solve this problem, it is going to be more guidelines to break. Each state has their own laws. But to make sure everyone follows the same procedure, the lawmakers should make these type of laws apply to the nation. One of the rules that should be strongly enforced is background checks, “to ensure convicted felons, individuals who are not of sound mind, and individuals regarded as incapable due to a mental condition will be denied gun ownership” (Alters). Private individuals are not
Gun Control in America has been argued back and forth for decades past. On one side it is strongly believed that the Second Amendment suggests that individual citizens have a constitutionally protected right to own a gun and protect themselves. These individuals believe that gun control laws do not in fact reduce gun violence. On the other side it is said if Gun Control laws are enacted there would be less gun and school violence. Also, it would be harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain a firearm. Both sides have very valid arguments and historical evidence to back their positions on within this debate.
Gun control is a very controversial topic tossed around in politics right now. Debates between it are split up pretty evenly with those who want it and those who don’t. Gun control shouldn’t be a debate, but common sense. Hunting is enjoyed greatly by many Americans, but because of the high incidents of gun-related deaths and injuries, it’s important that we input stricter gun laws, for example, background checks, the ban of assault weapons, regulating purchases of guns at gun shows, and not permitting concealed weapons allowed in bars, colleges, restaurants, or political rallies in order to keep out people safe.
Unfortunately, many people possess guns would should not posses one. However I do not see it feasible to strengthen guns laws. I believe that there should be stronger penalties for people who are caught with a gun illegally and stronger penalties for people who are or threaten violence with a gun. This would make people think twice about smuggling a gun, or carry them when they are not supposed to. This might also influence Congress to pass a law for a stronger background check on people purchasing a gun, which would satisfy both sides of this argument. A stronger penalty for gun offenders might cause the amount of violence without a gun to rise a
Mass shootings and suicides have become a serious occurrence from yearly to daily basis. With all these casualties, most of them were unarmed and killed by some sort of weapon. The outcomes of these events would have been different if they were carrying a gun. The possibilities of protecting themselves would be greater than if they did not. Obviously, having a legal weapon can help protect you and your love ones from a dangerous situation. Throughout history, men have been using and keeping weapons in their homes, which the 2nd Amendment claim that citizens have the right to bear arms. Gun control laws should not be prohibited, but in this case, more strict.
Individuals have the right to defend themselves. There are too many gun control laws – additional laws will not lower gun crime rates. What is needed is enforcement of current laws. Gun control laws do not prevent criminals from obtaining guns there are guns and if criminals need them they will get them, just as if I need food or water I will get them even if that means stealing. More guns in the hands of law abiding citizens means less crime if I have a gun someone will not try to rob me because they know that if they try I will protect myself at my thing.
The average college student carries notebooks, a laptop, and maybe some snacks or water in their backpack, what if it held a gun? Although many guns rights activists support the new Open Carry Bill 910 that allows concealed guns on college campuses, gun control laws should be enforced rather than be made ineffectual because guns are rarely used in self defense, it would decrease the number of gun deaths, and the average college student isn’t responsible enough to carry a gun.
Gun control is an ongoing debate and will never stop because there will always be that one person to testify against it and get it going again. In this year of an election, many politicians have stated the need for gun control, but their reasoning is not logical. There may be a need for gun control, but the laws that are in place now have gone too far. Too many laws create too many restrictions, and maybe they are there to protect citizens, but they also encourage lawlessness. They also start riots and other things like that because people are pushing for so many gun control laws and guns are being banned.
United States are the most top armed nations around the world, and there are 270 million guns which are held by US civilians (Brussel). With the large number of guns, it could become unpredictable without proper gun control. As an example, the tragedy was brought upon the nation on December 14 2012, twenty children and six staff members was killed by a single man at Sandy Hook Elementary school. New York passed the Ammunition and Firearms enforcement act of 2013 becoming the first state to respond to the tragedy in Newton, Connecticut (Rosebrugh). Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who signed it into law now requires gun licenses to be renewed every five years and background checks on all gun sales which makes New York one of the most challenging place to obtain a gun. The recent bill passed by New York should be a model for the Federal Law because strict gun laws could protect innocent lives from being taken away by groups of people such as criminals, or those who are mentally unstable.
Today in the United States, few gun control laws are strictly enforced, allowing many dangerous citizens to easily obtain firearms. With guns in the hands of the wrong people, there is a constant threat to others.
Gun control has been a highly controversial issue in the United States, especially in the wake of so many recent tragic mass shootings. For some people having a gun is a crime, and for others gun control is a right that belongs to us. But the question is, do we need stricter gun control laws? We believe that gun violence has gotten out of control with massive shootings, and we need to do everything to stop it.
America is the number one country for number of gun related deaths ratio each year. “In Germany 381, in France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39 and in the United States, 11,127” (Moore Michael, 51:15-51:48). Due to the United States having the greatest number of gun related deaths, it is almost essential to implement gun-control laws that restrict people from purchasing and owning dangerous firearms. The laws that are created to control the guns should ultimately keep the safety of the citizens first. Of course, there is no easy way or solution to please both sides of the argument, but there should be a balance between both sides.
Unfortunately, across the nation there have been at least 156 school shootings in America since 2013— an average of nearly one a week. (Unknown, 2015) There have been multiple attempts to address and avoid the dangers students + staff face while on “gun free” campuses. Many pro-gun enthusiast argue that the right to bear arms is in fact a constitutional right, therefore everyone should be able to have a license to carry to defend themselves. Obviously the only way to secure campuses from bullets flying--is more bullets flying. Not to mention that fact that, most students and faculty should be aware that any space can or should become a battlefield and for the visual learners on campuses across the nation, guns would re- instill the sanctity of learning by implementing authoritative fear.
The gun violence and gun control in america needs help but should we add more guns laws. Do you think we should add gun laws to make it more difficult to purchase a weapon. I think that their should be more gun laws to make it harder to purchase a gun any every state.
Gun control laws should not be strengthened in an attempt to keep the residents of the United States safe. For many people when the topic of gun control comes up they think about tragic shootings such as Sandy Hook or Columbine where innocent children lost their lives and blame it all on the gun used. This brings me to my first argument that guns are not the root cause of killings. Unfortunately even if all guns were abolished, anyone with an intent to kill will find a new option such as bombs, knives, or fire which has already been done in killings such as the Boston Marathon Bombing. The people doing the killing need fixing and help, not the laws. A study by Harvard showed several European countries with high gun ownership, like Norway, Finland, Germany and France had 9 times lower murder rates than in Luxembourg where handguns are totally banned and ownership of any kind of gun is minimal. This proves guns are not the issue, peoples mindsets are. This explains why Russia enforces very strict gun control on its people, but its murder rate still remains four times higher than in
Gun ownership should be banned in order to reduce crime rates and ensure the protection of our nation’s people. Throughout the United States, gun control has become a controversial issue due to gun advocates strongly believing their 2nd Amendment rights guarantee them legal access to guns. Although gun advocates view gun ownership as self defense, the government and gun control supporters have noticed that legal distribution of guns has been linked to school shootings, homicide, and violent crimes. Furthermore, legal distribution of guns increases the risk of harming innocent people while declining the police’s power to establish safety in society. Overall, in order to prevent the destruction of our country, the people must work together to ban gun ownership and ratify the 2nd Amendment rights clarifying its purpose to the public.
