Mass shootings and suicides have become a serious occurrence from yearly to daily basis. With all these casualties, most of them were unarmed and killed by some sort of weapon. The outcomes of these events would have been different if they were carrying a gun. The possibilities of protecting themselves would be greater than if they did not. Obviously, having a legal weapon can help protect you and your love ones from a dangerous situation. Throughout history, men have been using and keeping weapons in their homes, which the 2nd Amendment claim that citizens have the right to bear arms. Gun control laws should not be prohibited, but in this case, more strict. Have you, as a citizen, ever wondered what would happen if a burglar broke into your home and in seconds, had you at gunpoint. There is nothing can be done but remain as a hostage in your own home. In a different scenario, those few seconds can help you access your weapon and be ready for any kind of situation. Carrying a weapon in your home protects your family and your property from any types of danger. Having a gun gives them at least a fighting chance in the event that a burglar or home invader manages to get in (Pros and Cons). Other than reinforcing doors and windows, having a gun would be the best choice in protecting your home. Not only that, guns can actually protect from something greater. Mass shootings can occur anywhere these days. We, as citizens of this country, have no idea where these events occur so
Gun Control in America has been argued back and forth for decades past. On one side it is strongly believed that the Second Amendment suggests that individual citizens have a constitutionally protected right to own a gun and protect themselves. These individuals believe that gun control laws do not in fact reduce gun violence. On the other side it is said if Gun Control laws are enacted there would be less gun and school violence. Also, it would be harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain a firearm. Both sides have very valid arguments and historical evidence to back their positions on within this debate.
Trevor Burrus from Cato Institute's Center for Constitutional Studies showed how the use of guns for good are far greater than uses for the bad. “In the past 20 years, the cases of permit holders using their guns improperly are quite rare.”(Burrus 3). This is a problem for gun control because the valid arguable point for it is becoming increasingly smaller. This is also a problem for the media because they report vague negative gun usage rather than positive because a large majority of the media's reporters are liberal gun control advocates. Americans who concealed carry firearms are better off in a defense position rather than an unarmed civilian. “studies have found that Americans use guns defensively between 830,000 and 2.45 million times per year.” (Burrus 2). This is a problem because a very small percentage of gun related incidents make it to the news, therefore people think that there aren't as many firearm crimes than there is, and could potentially be unarmed in an emergency situation. Also this means that since there are this many people using guns defensively, there are people who die innocently because they are unarmed. From this, the government had make the laws that prevent people from being able to defend themselves in desperate defense
But because the second amendment cannot be changed, the Government should focus on controlling gun violence instead of gun control. As soon as people start focusing on how to stop gun violence without taking away guns, the country will see a considerably fast decline of shootings. Many laws have already been made in the 19th and 20th century to try and stop gun violence. It all varies on each state and what laws they have in place as well. In states with low population densities like Alaska and Vermont citizens are allowed to carry a concealed weapon without a permit but at places like Washington, with the highest murder rates in the country, the citizens there cannot even own a handgun. Different states, have different laws, about guns and whether you can conceal or not conceal a weapon with a license. The second amendment protects people the right to own guns for protection and cannot be changed, but laws that are put in place for gun control can take away certain types of guns and where you have access to
Each person has their own idea of what our founding fathers meant when they put this in our constitution. Some people use guns as a hunting sport or for food. But then there are the ones who want to cause harm to each other. I still remember the morning of December 11, 2012. The day the Clackamas Town Center shooting occurred. A man entered a busy mall, killed 2 people and seriously injured another. He ended up shooting himself after causing all that fear and pain to the shoppers. My family and I had planned to visit the mall that day to take my relatives who came to visit from California, but we overslept. We heard the news on the radio on our way there and we turned around knowing we could have been there. The culprit stole an AR-15 from
The second amendment states that right to keep and bear arms. This law has been etched in the United States history for centuries thus creating the highly popularized debate whether they should be gun control laws. Members and advocates of the National Rifle Association would argue against gun control. Their aim is to shift the focus away from guns and their destructive potential but instead have people focus on the criminal and shift the argument to them being mentally incapable or suggest that there is a lack of security within schools (Henigan 2009). Voices of the NRA do make valid points, however it prevents them from seeing the bigger picture. We as a society have drifted from the crux of the issue, which is, when put simply, guns are dangerous. In America, guns are extremely dangerous. Anyone who chooses to Google “gun violence statistics” and find the official research study done by the National Institute of Justice it would show you that 15 of the 25 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in America. It also vividly reminds us of how guns are easily obtained. The mass shootings that took place in America over the last
Gun violence in the United States is higher than ever, and criminals with guns will “…kill as many as 1000 people each day” (Alpers&Wilson). Taking this into perspective, it is only right to fight fire with fire or, in this case, use a gun to protect yourself and those around you. Gun control does not only decrease the ability for protection, it also decreases our rights as U.S citizens. The constitution clearly states that we are given the right to bear arms, meaning we may carry fire arms. Even if we have stricter laws for guns, it will not stop killers from shooting innocent people. These men and women causing damage to the lives of numerous individuals do not care if there is a law banning guns, because all they truly want to do is
The paramount function of the rights granted under the Second Amendment is the ability for citizens to protect themselves from violent or intrusive attacks. Millions of Americans own a firearm for defensive purposes, most commonly to protect against an intruder. In fact, four to six percent of gun owners reported using a gun for self defense within the last five years (Sowell). Not only is the use of firearms for self-defense common, but it is also highly effective. Crime victims who
To begin with, the second amendment should not be viewed as an unlimited right to own guns. Meaning certain types of guns and ammunition like those of military grade fully automatic assault rifle or high capacity magazines should be allowed to civilians. Both of these often turn what would be a murder into a mass murder. These high capacity weapons have been involved in 50% of the mass shootings between 1982 -2012, the death rate rose 62% and the injury rate rose 156% when these are involved. An example of this is the mass shooting that happened
Gun Control is unnecessary due to the fact so many people get the idea that having less firearms equals less crime. The Idea of gun control needing to be expanded will lead to more harm than good in keeping people safe and reducing gun related crime and lower down crime rate in general. Gun Control is basically the Government’s and the political elite goal of taking guns to make the population less safe. Cities and nations with less firearm restrictions have lower crime rates opposed to cities like Chicago.
One of the most controversial topics today is gun control. In the month of November, 2016, American citizens will vote for the issue of gun and ammunition control. Pro and anti-gun supporters have very different opinions on the issue of guns. According to news article Vice, over the past year, there have been 159 mass shootings in the U.S. It is now up to U.S citizens to decide whether gun laws should be enforced or not. A writer from USA Today, Robert Farago is opposed to gun control laws and on the other hand, author Phoebe Malts Bovy from New Republic is pro-gun control laws. These authors use ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade Americans to either support gun control laws or ban them.
Susan Milligan from U.S. News addresses that the main argument of many opponents to increasing gun regulation laws will argue that it is meaningless because criminals, which by definition don’t follow the law, won’t allow gun laws to hamstring their criminal behavior. Although this statement proves to be true, increasing gun regulation isn’t only designed to control criminals but, the everyday law abiding citizen as recent gun-related tragedies express. For example, a story covered by US News presents a man in Florida killed another man in the movie theater after said man refused to stop using his phone during the movie. Any reasonable person would not do such action but the fact that this guy came to the realization that he could kill someone such way is alarming. It turns out that the man was a former police officer with a spotless record. Although a background check wouldn’t be helpful in this situation an increased gun control policy that could’ve prevented this event from happening would’ve been if people were not allowed to carry concealed weapons in public, this specific tragedy could have not happened. Another incident that could’ve been stopped is one when a 12-year old boy who brought a shotgun to school concealed in a musical instrument case in New Mexico where he shot and injured two classmates. He was able to access a gun because his family is one that enjoyed hunting and using guns for sport. Now would you label this family as criminals? It seems as rather not.
Guns are something that have become very common for people in any city, or state to have; Whether it’s safe in the house or to carry on you as protection. Although there are many reasons to have a gun, there are also many reasons why people shouldn’t carry them. Even though protection is a huge reason to carry guns, there are many other reasons why people choose to carry them and their reasons are not always for protection.
To begin, one of the biggest fears of people today is getting their house broken into, that fear can become reality very easily if guns became outlawed and there was no source of protection. With the
To explain, you can protect yourself when someone goes up to you when you are in the street and it dark. When someone goes up to you and has knife you can pull out your gun that you know how to use and scare them away. People are going to be able to protect their house in case of a house robbery. For example, when people are sleeping at their home robbers might think that on one is home and they think they can rob your house but we can defend yourself and your home. Guns are used to defend a human´s
From a self defense standpoint, the reasons are fairly obvious to keep a gun in your house. If an armed intruder breaks into your home, you want and need a way to defend yourself or you could end up dead.
