There have been two policy problems that I have been able to identify. For one, federal laws do not put enough limitations on gun sales. Some States have placed laws, but without adequate federal laws gun traffickers are able to purchase guns in states where laws are more lenient, and transport them to states where those guns would be illegal. States are able to put their own laws of guns because our government is step up with concurrent powers, “powers that are shared by both federal and state governments.” (Barbour and Wright 2012, 108). Also 40% of guns do not require background checks. Without laws requiring background checks on all guns, and with background checks that go into enough depth, are being allowed into the hands of potentially …show more content…
This will lessen gun trafficking into states that wish to have stricter gun regulation. On top of that states may pass further gun control legislation to an extent that the people agree to be adequate. Background checks also need to be performed prior to all gun purchases in order to keep guns out of the hands potentially harmful people. This would be possible as it would just needs congresses agreement, and it would be desirable as many people would prefer a median control on guns and, according to Gallop.com in April of 2013 83% of Americans said they would’ve voted for a measure to increase background checks on guns if it was on the ballot (Newport 2013, 1). With congress as difficult as it is currently there most likely won’t be any changes in federal legislation for a while. However there are bills currently in congress, such as H.R. 308, which would limit the number of bullets in a magazine to 10. Also recently on the state level Jerry Brown signed AB 1014, which gives the right for a gun restraining order to be placed on individuals for a certain amount of time if there are signs that they may cause harm to someone. Also recently Judge Fredrick Scullin struck down Washington D.C.’s legislation that “requires gun owners seeking to obtain concealed-carry permits to justify their need for a permit and to undertake 18 hours of firearms training”. Judge Scullin was able to do this because of his judicial powers, “the power to interpret laws and judge whether a law has been broken” (Barbour and Wright 2012,
Everyone in the world has a theory about why something happens or how it happens, but in sociology there are many different types of theories that often contradict each other. Theory is defined as “a statement of how and why specific facts are related” (Macionis, 2013). Most theories explain why people act in certain ways and explains why a person in a group may act different than someone that is alone. When building sociological theories most sociologist ask their selves two different questions: “What issues should we study?” and “How should we connect the facts?” (Macionis, 2013). By answering these questions the sociologist is led to a road map, or a theoretical approach. Theoretical approach is described as “a basic image of society that
Gun control is a controversial issue for a long time around the world, particularly in U.S. because of a lots of mass shooting in school and public places. The second Amendment of the U.S. constitution is one of the shortest in all of the bill of right, it was written by the time period of American’s birth and it is the spirit of self-defense that help the new citizens of U.S. win their own freedom from the British. But now as the gun shooting problem happening every day in America, this gun control problem has gradually become to a hot issue. Compare to other countries like Britain, Canada, Japan, China, the difference between U.S. and those countries is in these countries to get a firearm is a very difficult thing
“The right to bear arms”, an amendment so prioritized by our founding fathers that it earned the very second spot on the list of birth rights as Americans. However, with constant tragedies striking the United States, such as massacres in public high schools and universities, mall shootings, and attempted assassinations on state representatives, it’s no wonder law makers are constantly debating the topic of gun control.
The violence in the United States is a big issue, but making more gun laws is not the answer. It is an inevitable fact that making it harder to get access to guns would only lead people to turn to black markets and more underhanded deals. In an article for the Los Angeles Times, James Q. Wilson writes, “It is virtually impossible to use new background check or waiting-period laws to prevent dangerous people from getting guns. Those that they cannot buy, they will steal or borrow” (Wilson). Dramatic changes within gun controls laws would, in itself, make more people mad and possibly lead to riots. In many people's minds, more gun control laws would mean to taking guns away. Gun control laws within themself are not a bad thing, the extent to which they are taken within a nation
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people. As a country the United States has approximately 270,000,000 guns. Both categories top the world. 22% of gun owners own two or more firearms. This gun wave had very humble beginnings from westward expansion to the revolutionary war and to the Second Amendment. This controversial amendment states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
ProCon.org recently featured an article that studied gun control. “Stricter state gun laws associated with fewer gun deaths, study finds.” The article discussed gun control laws in states with stricter laws tend to have lower rates of gun related homicides, and a suicide (ProCon para. 1) Gun control in the United States is becoming a wide spread issue and is becoming a problem everywhere. Although I am living in a city with uprising crime that has been skyrocketing over the years, I wasn’t aware of this being an issue all over the United States. I decided to do some research to find out whether I am in favor of Gun control laws or not. After reviewing many articles for and against gun control, I found out that I do in fact agree with
All that should happen is certain types of guns shouldn't be accessible to the public. For example, a war zone gun like an M-16 should not be available to the general public because it is not used to hunt and is not a reasonable gun to carry simply to bare arms. Gun control would also put more restrictions on who can purchase a gun, because some people are not in the right state of mind to own a gun. Manufacturers might also be required to make all guns child proof. It's simple, if guns are available to everyone and anyone, gun violence will not be taken as seriously as it should be. Also, while more gun legislation is needed, the already existing gun laws on the state and national levels need to be strictly enforced. For example, it is a national law that in order to purchase a gun, a background check is required, but not all states enforce this law properly.
Exploring the issues in gun control is the name of the article and it sounds obvious that the article is going to be about the issue behind mass shootings. The article is written by Dan O'Brien and Betty Stanton, who are both professional writers with great amount of knowledge about the issues in gun control. Dan O'Brien is a currently a Director of Safety and Environmental Health for San Antonio Water System, Certified Safety Professional, and Certified in Homeland Security. Betty Stanton is a 14-year veteran of U.S. Navy who is currently a currently a graduate student from Texas A&M University pursuing in Master of Public Service and Administration degree from George Bush School of Government and Public Service. Based on the name of their article, it seems like the article is going to talk about the connection between gun uses and the shooting incidents; however, guns are not the case. The gun control is not the real issue in mass shooting. Many people believe that guns are the main reason that there are more killing and shooting, especially mass shooting, but their facts usually fail to support their argument. Gun-free zones sounds like a safe place to be at and not have to worry about any mass shootings, but it always turns out wrong. In the article, Richard Mark, the former Arizona sheriff, says that guns are already banned in schools and that is why the shootings happen in schools. There haven't been any real evidence that gun laws decrease amount of mass shootings
On December 14, 2012, one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in the little town of Newton, Connecticut. The shooter, twenty-year-old Adam Lanza, managed to kill twenty children ages six and seven, as well as 6 adult staff members within just eleven minutes. According to New York Daily News, “the shooter stormed the…school…and fired a total of 154 rounds.” “All but two of the 26 students and staffers massacred in [sic] at Sandy Hook Elementary School died from ‘multiple gunshot wounds,’ according to death certificates released (Hutchinson.)” As horrifying as this incident may seem, it is not isolated. There have already been 186 mass shootings this year
just ignore bans. The only two things passing a law of this nature would accomplish
Public policies are developed in response to the existence of a perceived problem or an opportunity. The analysis delves into a public issue or problem and assesses a set of proposed government action for addressing the issue. The job of the analyst is to describe the background and status of an issue and then, using research and analysis, determine a proper government action to resolve the issue. By comparing options and weighing their expected benefits, the analyst should conclude with a recommended course of action or inaction to addressing the issue.
The idea of policy reform aims to enhance the laws on the books and attempt to remove loopholes that are making the purchase of firearms very easy for those who under federal law are barred from owning them.
Their opinion contradicts the opinion of some in saying that the right to have a weapon makes a society free.
It is essential that the United States government implement the following three policies to protect the lives of its citizens: mandate a gun amnesty program, require owners to pass tests and insure their weapons, as well as prevent persons lacking mental capacity from possessing such deadly weapons.
I think that the program has good intentions because it seems that the thoughts behind this strategy are to help people in need and get rid of firearms lying around. Another benefit is that these people will not sell their guns to potential criminals, but to a government entity. On the other hand, I do not think the program will work for everybody and in the long run it will cease to give positive results. It mentions that there is a drug issue in the area, therefore, the drug dealers will not turn their weapons for money or grocery vouchers because they have their own way to get those goods and services. Another big issue is that the people will not get the same amount of money they paid for for their weapons. I do not have a firearm because
