Gun Control Under Control
Whenever a shooting happens, such Columbine, the Aurora Theater Shooting, or the Navy Yard shooting, the question of gun control comes up in politics again. Then after a month or two, the topic is dropped, until yet another shooting happens. When is this nation going to finally make a change? America needs to put more emphasis on making certain potential criminals and the clinically insane do not have access to such dangerous weapons. What about the little boy who found his parent’s gun in his parent’s bedside drawer and accidentally shot himself? Should there not be laws to protect him? The answer is yes. The government needs to take guns out of the hands of criminals and children and into the hands of people

The idea of redesigning guns is considered more with public safety due to the larger numbers of gun-related deaths (Now 3). What is so hard about making guns safer? If people are not willing to make guns safer, which is obviously the case, then there should be gun controls. . Imagine how many of these accidental deaths could be prevented if guns can be kept out of the hands of children and the careless.
According to the NCIPC “In 1994, there were 38,505 firearm-related deaths. These included: more than 17,800 homicides; more than 18,700 suicides; more than 1,300 unintentional, firearms-related deaths related to firearms” (Facts 1). Some of the worst crimes are committed with guns. For example, the shooting at Columbine which Americans heard about on the news in 1999. Two teenagers shot and killed twelve students and one teacher at their own school (Facts 1). The boys were later thought to be mentally ill, as with many of the people who commit shooting such as this. Could this have been prevented through gun laws that require stricter background checks and better mental health check ups? In an article by Craig R Whitney, he quotes LaPierre from NBC, “We have a mental health system in this country that has completely and totally collapsed. We have no national database of these lunatics” (Whitney 1). So many suicides and homicides could be prevented with government mandated mental
News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.
Criminals are provoked by self-protection and guns can thus be a disincentive. A majority of convicted American criminals have reported that they fear from attacking the victims who are armed. Their fear of encountering armed victims surpasses their fear of being caught by police (Lott, pp.05). Robbers do not attempt to break into houses after midnight because of the probability of being shot. Thus, society should be against gun control because crimes will decrease.
ProCon.org recently featured an article that studied gun control. “Stricter state gun laws associated with fewer gun deaths, study finds.” The article discussed gun control laws in states with stricter laws tend to have lower rates of gun related homicides, and a suicide (ProCon para. 1) Gun control in the United States is becoming a wide spread issue and is becoming a problem everywhere. Although I am living in a city with uprising crime that has been skyrocketing over the years, I wasn’t aware of this being an issue all over the United States. I decided to do some research to find out whether I am in favor of Gun control laws or not. After reviewing many articles for and against gun control, I found out that I do in fact agree with
It is up to the government and the Unites States citizens in insert these changes into the system. Since it is very easy to get through the process of buying a gun, the laws should be tightened to fully check and educate the individual making the purchase. Driving a car can be dangerous, however classes and testing for the act of driving is in place, owning and using a gun should have these same requirements as far as educating civilians on proper use and storage of the guns. Many lives could be saved and fear could subside in the eyes of students and faculty if the proposed laws are put into place. A gun is not dangerous unless it is used by the wrong individual and we have let these wrong mentally ill individuals destroy what is suppose to be a safe and secure place for learning. It is time for America to further prevent school shootings by applying stricter gun and safety control laws for our schools. Even if the stricter laws only saves a one school shooting from happening then that is many families saved from horrific
The first reason that there should be more gun control laws is that it would prevent thousands of deaths. For example, “guns are the leading cause of death by homicide and by suicide;” along with that, firearms are the “12th leading cause of all deaths [overall]” (Gun Control, n.p.). With this in mind, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that there were “270,237 firearm suicides in the United States,” including more than half of the total suicides throughout the years of 1999 and 2013 (Centers for Disease, n.p.). As a result, it would also decrease gun violence significantly and reduce the costs of gun violence-related expenses. According to the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, “gun violence cost each person in the United States around $564” (Gun Control, n.p.). Ted Miller also estimated that the “annual firearm injury costs an average of $645 per gun, in America” (PIRE, n.p.). Not to mention, statistics show that “every day, 315 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and suicide
The debate over gun control in the United States has waxed and waned over the years, stirred by a series of mass shootings by gunmen in civilian settings. In particular, the killing of twenty schoolchildren in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012 prompted a new national discussion about gun laws. However, legislation that would have banned semiautomatic assault weapons was defeated in the Senate despite extensive public support. In 2017, mass shootings at a music festival in Las Vegas and at a church near San Antonio have rekindled the gun control debate and invoked comparisons of U.S. gun policies and those of other wealthy democracies.
When a mass shooting or other act of terrorism occurs the first thing thought is: who is the person who did it? Are they white? Are they Islamic? After the basic questions are established there is next to no more talk or news coverage about the person who committed the crime. The only concern is the politics behind it. The media is more concerned about what the president has to say about the overall shooting, not about why this person had a gun or what caused this said person to committee the horrible crime. As the article Why mass shootings don't change the politics of gun control, in 1 Trump quote claims; “The reality is that for most conservatives and most gun owners, these mass shootings don't move the needle on gun control because,
Gun control is becoming a topic that is heard throughout the news and for what. The number of mass shooting is becoming more relevant because the news is wanting to make a change with the American public owning firearms. Anti-guns protesters claim it would be safer to get the out of the hands of the public. This is false and has stupidity written all over it. This country was defended by your average male that owned a rifle. When the government wasn’t there to protect us, the men took a stand and grabbed their rifles to win this country. The history of firearms cannot be erased.
Many of the nation's issues are the result of the same ethical diversities that attract one to our nation, known as the “land of the free.” Our government leaders and elected officials must take into account these ethical diversities when attempting to address and correct problems that affect one's ability to live peacefully and equally in the United States. There are many issues facing the United States Supreme Court in which the current legislation and political resolves are insufficient; among these issues is simply, gun control. Gun rights advocates fancy that gun control laws go too far. Having said that, supporters of gun control don't believe the government is doing enough to better regulate the distribution of firearms. It is
Americans participated in a great debate through the 60's, 70's, 80's, and into the 90's. It is the argument of whether handguns, shotguns, and rifles should be restricted or banned. This debate over ownership of a firearm has produced strong emotions through the past years and does not seem to be abating. Does the U.S. Constitution give people the right, or should guns be restricted or banned because they are used in the commission of many crimes? Some argue that the right to bear arms is not as vital today as it was in the 1700's, or that it does not apply to individuals. Others argue that it is an individual right guaranteed by the Constitution to own a firearm.
In December 2012, 20 years old Alan Lonzon kill 20 children in the Sandy hook elementary middle school. Could gun control prevent this deadly mass murder? Gun control has been a very controversial topic in United States. Our government should care about this issue because innocent people die every year in the United States. Gun control will not prevent mass shooting because guns are accessible to everybody and 3D guns see it his fi, most of the time mental health can be the reason why those horrible events occur. In my opinion the government should think another way to prevent gun control.
Gun control is not one issue, but many. Gun control is a crime issue, to others it is a rights issue. It is a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others. Issues such as gun control and gun rights have remained a matter of debate and have been lobbying around in Congress meetings. Over the years, there have been many different laws and regulations on weapons in the United States. However, to fully understand American views on guns, one must go back to the beginning of American history itself.
In the wake of all the school shootings in the past fifteen years gun control has become a more serious issue than before. Gun control has always been a concern in the United States, but not until the first major school shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado did this topic become a reality to the American public. In 1999, this massacre left fifteen people dead including the assassins. And just recently on March 5, 2001 did the tradition continue, when Charles Andrew Williams killed two classmates, leaving many injured in Santee California.
Because of the recent shootings in Newton and Aurora, the topic of gun regulations and control has become more debated. Could these tragic events have been prevented if stricter gun regulations existed? Maybe they cannot prevent every shooting, but if gun regulations can save life, isn’t it worth it for gun owners to have a couple extra steps in buying a gun or less ammunition in their magazine? Gun regulations should be implemented into society to prevent evil people from getting military grade weapons.
Guns are not the issue, people with guns are the issue. Controlling the availability of guns and the people who could get guns would not stop shooting from happening. I agree with South Carolina, state Rep. Bill Herbkersman on teaching children in school about guns, but it shouldn’t be only about guns. School should be teach students about the law of their country and the rights the liberties they have too. Students should be taught when shooting someone would be considered okay under the law and also the value of human life so that they can make better decisions as adults. Yes we should have background checks to prevent guns from the mentally ill, but also when a shooting happens by a person who pass the background check, the solution is not
