Background
In 1881, James Bonsack invented the cigarette-making machine. Soon after, he started a business with James Duke. In their first year, they built a factory and made 10 million cigarettes. Five years later, they made 1 billion cigarettes. The first brand of cigarettes was called ‘Duke of Durham ' and was packaged in a box with baseball cards. Cigarettes main target consumers were men and later branched out to women. World War I (1939-1945) and World War II (1939-1945) gave the tobacco industry lots of business. Soldiers lived off of cigarettes when they were overseas. Similarly, the women at home also began smoking a lot of cigarettes. In 1944, cigarette production rose to 300 billion a year. Eventually, the Surgeon General of the U.S. notified the public about the dangers of cigarettes in 1964. He announced that the tar and nicotine caused lung cancer. So in 1965, the Congress of the U.S. passed the Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act, which states that every pack must have a warning label that reads, "cigarettes may be hazardous to your health." This was how the general public became more aware of the health effects of tobacco.
At first, smoking in public was allowed even around children. It was not until the 1970 's that people started to talk about the dangers of second-hand smoke. The people who wanted to make this change were the founders of the organization called Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP). California was the home of multiple GASP
When tobacco was first brought to England it became a huge hit and soon there after, it spread to other parts of the world. At first it was only sold as a luxury to affluent city folk but eventually the manufacturing was revolutionized by the Bonsack machine which made it affordable for the general public. Ten years later, the American Tobacco Company was founded by James Buchanan Duke, who promoted cigarettes by using aggressive marketing and advertising techniques. The success of the cigarette was not only attributed to the witty business strategies utilized but also to the fact that young men in urban areas were smoking them and creating a trend. When World War 1 came about, smoking became an even bigger phenomenon. In fact, the military and governments organized a constant supply of cigarettes for the troops. At this point in time cigarette companies like Camel were bringing in tons of revenue. With all this new money, these companies were available to create bigger and better advertisements which resulted in more product consumers. In the early 1900’s this disposition became even more popular. In some parts of the world, up to 80% of the male populations were regular smokers. Smoking became an acceptable part of culture in almost all aspects of life; people did
I have had guns in my life since I was young. I served eight years in the military, and have shot in competitions for many years. I also love the outdoors, and enjoy the ability to put food on the table that is natural. I think the reasons for keeping the right to bear arms are so important that if the American people lost that right; it would mean life changes that many would be unwilling to make.
By 1872, the family was producing 125,000Lb of tobacco on a regular basis. Duke started manufacturing cigarettes in 1881 and acquired the license to operate the first cigarette making machine. Duke sold 40% of American cigarettes in the market. In 1884, James moved to New York City and opened an office for their company. He advertised in posters, newspapers, magazines and he also included coupons inside the cigarette packets. To promote even more, James offered samples of his cigarettes to immigrants, hoping that they would come back as paying customers. By the time all of his promoting and advertising came to an end Dukes Company produced 45% of cigarettes sold in the United States. In 1889, James made the decision to join four major tobacco companies. American Tobacco was born and they controlled 90% of tobacco.
"Being Prepared in Suburbia" is an essay by Roger Verhulst published in 1992. The purpose of this essay is to show how guns can change a person's mind and emotions. Throughout the essay, Verhulst shares personal examples of his beliefs of gun ownership and personal examples of how his life changed once he bought a Crossman Power Master 760 BB Repeater pump gun. After purchasing the gun, he believed that the reason people like guns so much is because of a passion that gun owners feel. He stated, "This is the feeling that explains their passion, their religious fervor, their refusal to yield. It's rooted in the gut, not in the head" (Verhulst 342). He also realized that personal thoughts and morals about gun ownership change for a gun
News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.
Tobacco was in crude form since the early 1600s, and was mainly used for pipe-smoking ,chewing tobacco and snuff. In the early 1800s, is when cigarettes began to become widely popular in the United States. The fact that tobacco was bad for human health was not known around the time European had proscribed it to the Native Americans. At this time the physicians thought it would be an effective medicine. Around the 20th century is when they found that smoking can cause extreme health effects. In the 1930 is when a researcher in Cologne, Germany made the connection between smoking and the causation of cancer. A Doctor by the name of Raymond Pearl reported that people who smoke do not live as long as individuals who do not smoke. In 1944, the
Criminals are provoked by self-protection and guns can thus be a disincentive. A majority of convicted American criminals have reported that they fear from attacking the victims who are armed. Their fear of encountering armed victims surpasses their fear of being caught by police (Lott, pp.05). Robbers do not attempt to break into houses after midnight because of the probability of being shot. Thus, society should be against gun control because crimes will decrease.
Gun laws have been debated for years now in America, and they have been debtated for various reasons. Recently, the idea of conceal and carry has been brought over to college campuses and schools around our nation. There are two main sides to this controversial topic, people who are for conceal and carry and people who are against it. There have been multiple bills proposed in florida to allow everyday people carry guns on campus. This topic has been a hot debate after incidents like the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting and even more recently the Ohio State shooting. Although the “Right to Bear Arms” is an amendment, conceal and carry should not be allowed onto college campuses and schools due to its potential consequences.
“The United States ranked #1 highest country to have 88.8 guns per 100 people an average of 270,000,000”(“Should More Gun Control Laws Be Enacted?”). On Feb. 14, 2018, the lives of students, teachers, and parents at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL would forever be changed. A former student Nicholas Cruz engaged in a mass shooting taking away 17 innocent lives: 14 students and 3 staff members, traumatizing the lives of fellow students. The Parkland, FL massacre is the most recent school shooting as students take immediate action in support of a stricter gun legislation, to prevent the endorsement of lives lost due to fatal school shootings. Firearm regulations are laws that enforce the sale and concealed carry of weaponry by a civilian with the permit of a legal firearm license. Gun control laws should be stricter for adults 21 and older for recreational
Statistics on an issue such as gun control are not hard to come by. The numbers seem to sway in the favor of gun control being ineffective against the epidemic of gun violence that is facing this nation today. There is evidence to support that many guns used for illegal activities are obtained by illegal means anyway, making laws to restrict the purchase of said guns ineffective at keeping firearms out of criminals hands. Evidence also supports the statements that guns are used in defense more often than not, that the age old statistic that “13” children die each day by guns is inaccurate, and that there are numbers that show the direct relationship between the loosening of gun laws and the lowering of the crime rate.
The Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act, in short: The Brady Act, was United States legislation that was passed by Congress in 1993. The Brady Act required a five-day waiting period and criminal background check, performed by state and local law enforcement, for the purchase of a handgun. The Brady Act was instituted to curtail handgun violence and decrease the probability of a handgun ending up in a criminal’s hands. The legislation was heavily pushed by Senator James Brady and his wife, Sarah Brady, after Sen. Brady was seriously injured by a gunshot wound during the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
Tobacco, Smokes, Cancer Sticks, Chew, Dip, whatever you want to call it, has been poisoning the innards of individuals since the days of the prehistoric Mayas of Mexico at around 600 to 900 A.D. This tobacco craze would resume in the society of the American Indians and later to the European settlers. In the early seventeenth century, tobacco was the chief cash crop of America’s first colony, Jamestown Virginia. This crop would continue to flourish in throughout history. By the early 1900’s, The American Tobacco Company was the leading and most influential tobacco corporation. The game completely changed at the time of the two World Wars however. Soldiers began receiving free cigarettes and the industry began targeting women as potential costumers as they were gaining new rights and liberties in society at this time. In 1964, the cigarette empire began to see its decline when the Surgeon General of the U.S. wrote a report about the dangers of cigarette smoking. After this statement by “America’s doctor”, legislation did everything in their power to detour people form purchasing these harmful products. They have gone as far as to make tobacco companies label “caution” on their products. Tobacco companies have recently been having trouble selling their
A debate that has lasted since the beginning of the United States is the debate over guns. What started off as a debate over who should have guns in colonial times, ended up a debate over whether the government should impose stricter laws or leave gun rights alone. There are numerous reasons to have stricter laws, such as the protection of society, but there are still people who oppose strict gun laws. First, let me give a brief history of this public concern.
It was 1920 when smoking began to catch on in the United States. Its recreational use was
1. This is a very controversial topic that discusses the topic to ban or not to ban weapon advertisements. The book states that banning controversial topics may protect youth in particular from messages that may be problematic. Banning ads will also result in products being stigmatized. I personally believe that ads for weapons should be banned but I understand that there are other factors that go into it. These include the First Amendment- freedom of speech. The government allows people to talk about it and since guns are legal, many people believe they should be advertised since it is a personal opinion and this is how many weapon companies make money. I believe that if weapon advertising is not banned then it should at least provide warning
