In today's society it's not drugs and alcohol at school were worried about anymore, It's guns. Gun violence and school shootings have been all over the news in 2018. The question everyone keeps asking themselves, is why? A few things that play a factor in most of these school shootings are the shooters home and school life, their easy access to the weapon, and their overall wellbeing as a whole. One key factor in almost all of these school shootings are these students home and school lives. At home they normally don’t have a strong parent figure in their lives. They then go to school, and stand out as different, leading to being alone or bullied. Not having people there for you in your life is extremely hard, and sadly some people take it
School violence is becoming a worldwide issue, but is a particular problem within the United States. Violence can occur in many ways such as; bullying, school gangs, physical attacks, and fatalities involved with guns. School shootings have been on the rise over the past several years. To bring awareness to school violence, teachers, staff, and parents need to be further trained in noticing warning signs of depression and anger issues which may lead to bullying and disrespectful learning environments for all parties. In addition to awareness within schools, the debate over gun control has been a topic discussed for many years in hopes to curb school shootings.
Since 2013, there has been 242 school shootings, an average of nearly one a week. Research states that “these incidents resulted in 59 deaths and 124 non-fatal injuries.” Nearly one in six of the shootings occurred after an argument intensified because “of the presence of a gun rather than in spite of it.” Research also shows that more than half of the kids obtained a gun at more (most likely because their guardian did not store it correctly.) In 2013-2015 there was 84 K-12 school shootings and 76 college of university shootings. The U.S Department of Education statistics show that the number of students killed on campus per year is approximately 15 homicides and 5 students annually in primary and secondary schools. In over half of the incidents did the perpetrator intellionally injure/kill at least one other person with a gun (In eight of those incidents, the shooter the shot and killed themselves.) Between 2013 and 2015, 56% were perpetrated by minors. Research provides an extra reason that gun control is needed, because more than half of these school shooters are getting these guns from their guardians
It is a somber event for those who read the newspaper when they see the risks that the children in this continent are subject to. Mothers and fathers become worried when they send their offspring to school, not certain when or if they will return. Lives are ended early and without reason, when these helpless infants are helplessly caught in a horrific situation.
Gun violence is a crisis in the United States and it has now dominated national debate since the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Florida. A 19 year old killed 17 and injured 14 people at the school. The article, “No, there haven't been 18 school shootings in 2018. That number is flat wrong,” is by John Woodrow Cox and Steven Rich is published in the Washington Post on February 15, 2018. According to the article, Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit group, co- founded by Michael Bloomberg, defines a school shooting as “‘anytime a firearm discharges a live round inside a school building or on a school campus or grounds.”’ Yet the Gun Violence Archive defines school shootings as those that take place during school
School shootings are becoming more common in the United States. People may say that these shootings are making our gun control more strict. From my point of view there will be stricter gun control. If we are going to have stricter gun control, then there needs to be background checks for people that are going to buy guns or ammunition. There have been shootings all over the U.S, including Sandy Hook Elementary, Columbine High School, Umpqua Community College in Oregon, and Virginia Tech College.
Since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, there have been roughly 208 school shootings on school grounds. This series of shootings, especially after the attack in Parkland Florida, has created an outcry for stricter gun laws, higher purchasing ages and more background checks to try and make schools safer. One of the ideas on the table to reach this is to arm teachers and staff with firearms to ‘stop the threat before it happens’. But, this has received nothing but opposition from a majority of Americans, since the cost or properly arming a school is too great, arming teachers is an open invitation to unwarranted gun violence against minority students and teachers due to racial biases. The outcry of students, teachers and families is
On April 20th, 1999, two shooters, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, entered Columbine High School and murdered thirteen people and wounded more than twenty others. In doing so the two teenagers not only hurt many families and left a community scarred forever, but they also changed the landscape of American politics, national attitudes towards gun control, and began a violent phenomenon, now known as school shootings, that would haunt America for years to come. Since that fateful day in 1999, school shootings have become common place in America. From 2013 to January of 2018, it is estimated that around “300 school shootings” have taken place in the United States (Scott par.1). This data does not include the shooting at Parkland High School, which took place on February 24th, 2018, or the shooting at Santa Fe High
When you hear about a school shooter, you might think “Oh, there parents are awful, they just let their child do that,” Well you would be wrong. Most of the time we can`t comprehend if a child will be a potential school shooter, also them owning a gun does not make them a suspect for a potential school shooter.. The real issue here is the lack of communication between the victim or potential school shooter and the school. In “Here’s How to Prevent the Next School Shooting, Experts Say” by Anya Kamenetz, she states “It means the quality of relationships among the students and the adults in a school. It's affected by the school's approach to discipline and behavior, the availability of professionals like counselors and social workers, as well as any social-emotional curriculum taught in the classroom.” Also “School climate, in turn, affects students' mental and emotional health and
Schools are one of the easiest targets for shootings. It would easy for a student to walk into a school just like any other day but have a gun. Schools need to start to make sure they are watching what students bring into a school. It would easy for a student to hide anything in their backpack. Colleges would be another easy target for anyone. It would be easy for someone to just walk onto campus and cause a shooting. The reason these shootings happen at the places they did was because of how easy of a target they were. There is no way of stopping shooting unless they harden easy
In December 2013, 28 people including 20 children were shot to death at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, which caused school officials and parents to reflect on methods for better protection of students’ safety. Recently, United University issued a regulation of checking backpacks or book bags randomly for weapons such as guns and knives, and those who are found to carry weapons will receive certain punishments. It was said that the random search was able to forbid weapons on campus and improve the sense of safety among students. In my point of view, the random search may not as effective as considered and, to some extent, might cause some problems.
“Evil does not exist within a gun. It exists in the minds and hearts of those who pull the trigger for evil purposes.”- Samuel L. Jackson. People seem to think that guns are the problem when really the person behind it is the problem. Guns are made for us to protect ourselves when danger is near not for us to use it when we want to harm others. The school shooting has been a big deal for the last couple of months. It doesn’t seem to make sense for people to do those horrible things to students who go to school to get an education. People who use guns to commit a massacre end up killing themselves after they are done. We end up finding out that the person who committed the mass murder had mental issues and didn’t know what he/she was doing. Students are afraid of going to
For the world this type of people who usually call terrorist, murderer, most must have some kind of heart disease because what they do has no forgiveness from God. They are bad people without some feelings. They do not think about the evil that is causing and the damage that is going on, how many families are sad and how many broken hearts. No human being has the right to end the life of a living being and more with a person. This world could not be the best it may not be the best, but we must try to bring peace and provide love.
School violence, specifically school shootings, are a rising problem and concern that in some way affects every student, parent, and educator. According to Lee (2013), since 2010 there have been 54 school shootings in the United States alone and that number continues to rise (p. 88). The Macmillan Dictionary defines a school shooting as, “a violent act in which someone, usually a student, uses a gun to injure teachers, students, and staff” (n.d.). Although these violent acts directly affect those closest to the problem such as students, educators, and parents, when a tragedy such as this occurs, the entire nation is affected in some way. When an intense act of school violence happens, fear and panic are instilled
The first seventeen weeks of 2018 there were twenty one school shootings. On and average school shootings happen at least two times a week. I agree with the article that schools should have mental health classes. Something I do not agree on is a teacher being armed with gun through the school day. It is great that some people want to come together and help the problem. School shootings are a huge problem and something needs to be done quick. There are a number of ideas that people could come up with to stop shootings.
So much damage can be done by one person and a gun. At some point in a shooters life, something went downhill, and it led to them feeling negatively about themselves and their classmates. There is an array of reasons for this, but the main three discussed in this case study are bullying, isolation, and a strong need to “strike back.” As a society, and even more importantly, as students, there is a lot that can be done to prevent school shootings from happening. Prevention ranges from
