Guns Kill, but Laws Never Will Guns have been used throughout history for many reasons including hunting, fighting in wars, and for personal safety. Unfortunately, guns have also been used negatively and have caused many deaths. There have been laws in place to control the use of guns throughout history starting in the late 1700s. The first law was the Second Amendment which guaranteed the, “right of the people to keep and bear arms.” KRCRTV.com reported on February 19, 2013 that the first gun control laws were created in Georgia in 1837 banning hand guns. Obama wanted to strengthen the ban on assault weapons, which were the weapons used by several killers in mass shootings in 2015. Most mass shootings are committed by people with mental illnesses, or people who were bullied or frustrated at work. With weak gun control people are able to purchase guns easily, and those that want to use them for mass shootings have very little standing in their way. Mass shooters, people with mental issues, and people with criminal backgrounds are all able to acquire guns, which calls for stricter background checks to be performed. Some countries have very restrictive background checks that require people to take gun training, get a hunting license, and show proof of membership to a shooting range. They also require that people prove that they are not mentally ill, do not have a criminal background, are old enough to have a gun, and do not have a police record. Frederick Lemueux from Slate Magazine says, “With these provisions, most U.S. active shooters would have been denied the purchase of a firearm.” In addition, a study from the John Hopkins Center for Gun Control Policy and Research found that after the backgrounds checks were no longer required beginning in 2007 in Missouri, the murder rate increased 16 percent.
