When first reading Shakespeare’s Hamlet it may seem like Hamlet took much longer that it should have for him to take action against his uncle. To the readers it is as if Hamlet already has all of the information he really needs to defend his actions but he does not. Hamlet passes up on some perfect opportunities to avenge his father, but why? Hamlet’s delay is perfectly justified; if he had gotten his revenge too soon it would not have been a true tragedy. First off, Hamlet knew he needed more proof of his father’s murder before he could take action. Hamlet is doubtful of the ghost although he has promised to it that he will avenge his father. It is completely reasonable to want more evidence of a crime before prosecuting the defendant, this is all that Hamlet was doing. Hamlet realizes that the ghost could be lying and taking advantage of him in his time of grief,
The spirit that I have seen
May be a devil, and the devil hath power
T’assume a pleasing shape, yea, and perhaps
Out of my weakness, and my melancholy,
As he is very potent with such spirits,
Abuses me to damn me; I’ll have ground
More relative than this: the play’s the thing
Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king. (1120)
Hamlet wants to be sure of the king’s guilt before he kills the king and has to suffer the consequences of murdering an innocent man forever.
As we see, Hamlet has already started his revenge on the king. He is simply gathering more evidence before taking unnecessary actions. Claudius,
