I want you to imagine you are in a pet store. You turn the corner to the small animal section and you see something that catches your eye. This little creature is nibbling at his cage trying to get out, he reminds you of Houdini. This creature is black, plump and pocket sized. This animal is a hamster! Hammy History The hamster trend first started in 1930 but they were not always in your five year old brothers bedroom. The first discovery of hamsters date all the way back to 1797, a man named Alexander Russell was first to mention hamsters. Thanks to Israel Aharoni the hamster breed was originated. Hamsters are the most common animals kept as pets because of their easy tempers and care routines, like any animal there are pros and cons to owning one as a pet. If you are looking to purchase a baby hamster the road will be a little bumpy. Hamsters are born blind and very weak, hamsters rely on their mother for two weeks, because of this hamsters grow at a slower rate. Hamsters are crepuscular which means they are most active during the twilight hours which may be a problem for young hamsters owners. This would be a problem because hamsters are very active and loud which may disrupt your sleep schedule. A simple solution would be to move your hamster out of your bedroom. Because hamsters are so active they need lots of attention, if you don't give your hamster enough attention they can chew the wires of their cage resulting in teeth or health problems. Hamsters are a very delicate animal and they need to seek immediate medical attention if they get sick. A very common problem is obesity which can cause heart problems and may possibly cause a broken or fractured toe from the amount of pressure on the foot. One solution would be to feed your hamster less fatty food like sunflower seeds and seed mixes instead, feed your hamster high protein and calcium in order to keep your hamster
