Happiness is often defined as a feeling of joy or merriment. However, events that occur within everyday life will leave us in an exact opposite state of being. It may be easy for some to obtain happiness, but the struggle to keep this state of mind proves ultimately difficult. To gain happiness one must first ask themselves what is happiness as it pertains to their overall perceptions life. They must also determine what makes them happiness or brings them joy. Whether it’s watching sports on a lazy sunday afternoon or taking a walk through the park with your children. Each and every factor you can think of plays a significant role in the overall perception of happiness within your life. Through various components one may become more in touch with their happiness and begin to live a more meaningful life.

As mentioned in previous statements, one of the most important factors as it relates to happiness, is determining what happiness means to you. Quite often when people are told to define “Happiness”, they refer to something of relevance to their work or relationships. Some may even say happiness is being able to purchase what you wish. As the saying goes “Money cannot buy happiness”, I guess some may beg to differ. So what exactly is happiness? From books and expensive classes that teach people how to achieve happiness to the fundamental right of “the pursuit of happiness” in the Declaration of Independence, the importance of happiness is evident in society. This causes the rise to two fundamental questions: “How does one attain happiness?” and “,How does happiness create a meaningful life?” Both happiness and living a meaningful life are achieved simultaneously. The search for happiness and the factors that make it brings meaning to life. Happiness can stem from several factors such as wisdom and knowledge, savoring life and its experiences, and even suffering and pain. Analyzing these factors brings meaning to one’s life.
Happiness is something that most people can’t achieve. It's a feeling that most people can learn. You can’t learn feelings like anger and depression. You can learn the steps that can guide you into happiness through fulfilling desires. Happiness is something that could be simple or complex. Seeing a puppy could make you happy or winning the lottery.

What then is happiness? Perhaps happiness is a basic and familiar concept, yet it may occur to be perplexing when one has to convey it through the medium of words. Lyubomirsky defines the term as “the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile” (Lyubomirsky 32). It is often subjective, personal, and can stem from a myriad of activities: some may experience similar feelings by engaging in sports, spending time with family and friends, others while reading or simply being in solitude. Due to the personal nature and subjectivity of happiness, a handful of myths pertaining to this concept has emerged. Three happiness myths were presented within the chapter: 1. Happiness must be found. 2. Happiness lies in changing our circumstances. 3. You either have it or you don’t. The first myth greatly piqued my interest, since I, too, have once externalized happiness and assumed that it would be found outside.
I define happiness as being the one and only creator of your own experience, choosing to take pleasure in what you have, right now, regardless of the circumstances, while being the best you that you can be. Happiness is feeling safe and supported no matter what your doing, and not being ashamed of who you are. Finally, happiness is, fundamentally, a choice. Your choice.
Happiness is not a strange term to us. We usually use that word to express our feelings in every day. Additionally, more than a word, “happiness” is what we really need and always seek in life.
