Throughout our lives, we will come across other individuals whose opinions differ from ours. Whether we decide to shadow their beliefs or stay strong to our own, it is how we handle the situation, as well as what we take from it, that shapes our character. I am now aware that, for the most part, it is best to have your own voice and remain firm to what you believe in instead of changing your views in order to please others just to fit in. As senior year approached, I had made the decision to tryout for Harlingen High School’s cheerleading squad. Being placed on a team of thirty-two girls, it was surely unavoidable to become caught up in disagreements. For instance, in June of 2015, our squad traveled to Austin, TX to attend UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association) cheer camp. At camp, the five seniors on our team each competed for UCA All-American, an award given to select individuals through a tryout process. Later, during camp, the cheerleaders who happened to make All-American were announced. It was soon discovered that each five seniors had received this award. I assumed everyone would be full of joy. However, to my amazement, the atmosphere appeared much different. …show more content…
Each of them felt they were significantly more deserving of obtaining this award than I was and did not believe I had earned it. Although I remained confused about why my fellow squad members wouldn’t be happy for me, or even all of us, I initially followed along with their beliefs. In order to prevent them from turning their backs on me as well as excluding me, I agreed that I did not deserve the award and forced myself to be unhappy simply to satisfy them. I allowed them to control my emotions and lay negative thoughts inside my mind. For most of my life I would try to please others in order to fit in, therefore, this situation was no
The Quinnipiac University poll was done during early September to test the waters before the first presidential debate between Clinton and Trump. The sample size was roughly 960, supposedly voters from across the nation with a margin of error of +- 3.2 which isn’t horrible. The numbers look fine and because it was a nationwide poll, the possibility of getting a fair and accurate cross section of views is fairly high, that being said there are a few issues with this poll that cause me to be concerned with the accuracy of this poll for many reasons.
In the fall semester of my freshman year in high school I had decided to try out for my school’s drill team, the Crimson Cadettes. This organization has a reputation of very classy, well put together young women and by being on the team, one automatically has extremely high standards that they are expected to meet. Being a Cadette is a big deal because it requires an abundance of hard work and is very time consuming. My teammates and I are often spending our extra time at school whether it be for practice, pep rallies, contests or even more. There are on average about sixty dancers on the team each year and because we spend so much time together, it is expected that sometimes we’ll disagree on some things.
My son has started applying to colleges and would appreciate if you can provide a short letter of recommendation for him on a google lettehead.
It was a cloudy night in November, it was the 2016 Legacy High School football banquet. There was catered Chipotle so the whole team was eating tons of food. It was the season that the bus crash happened. 4 coaches were hospitalized, and many many players were hurt. It was a tough season to play. The awards were being announced. I wasn’t expecting an award considering some very talented Seniors were getting called ahead of me. I was currently a junior, and Juniors don't usually receive these type of awards. The award was all-conference. This is created from the football conference that certain high schools are apart of, and combine to make the best team in the conference. “Austin Mullins, Defensive End” I walked up and Coach Voorhees started
The stakeholders of Penn State held different opinions. Some believe the university should be criticized for its lack of compassion for the victims and its failure to keep a child predator from being present and around children. Others feel that the scandal produced a witch-hunt with authorities looking to point the finger at others (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan,
As the new school year started and I was labeled the ‘cheer captain’ I immediately felt jealousy from my teammates. I was no longer someone they admired but someone they rejected. My teammates no longer had appreciation for me. Everything I did was sabotaged into hurting my feelings and even me. Everyone thought I was higher up on the social scale than I even did.
Each member on the team shared the same values, emotions, and knowledge of that particular sport. As a freshman and sophomore in high school, I knew that I needed to be on the same level as my other teammates. For me to be accepted in this community, I had to show them my ethos appeals to let them know that I was just like them. Sportsmanship, diligence and perseverance, were the skills needed to show the upperclassmen and my coach that I was serious and that I was ready to be part of the team. The upperclassmen knew that I had it in me; all I had to do was prove that I could do it. Proving to older long time members of the team is not the easiest thing to do. They are cynical about every action you do. In order for me to prove my worth, I had to show an emotional appeal toward the “veterans of the team” which were similar to that of the
The Academic Decathlon is an annual high school competition organized by the nonprofit United States Academic Decathlon Association. It consists of seven multiple choice tests, two performance events, and an essay. The Academic Decathlon team at Ridgefield Park High School is coached by Mrs. Grandov, and had participated at the Regional Competition at Ramapo High School on January 30th. The topic for this year’s competition was India, and students were tested in the following areas: Math, Language & Literature, Economics, Art, Music, Social Science, and Science. They also wrote essays, gave speeches, and were interviewed by the Academic Decathlon judges.
We will be helping with the Thursday Night meal at the Highland Center on the 5th Thursday of each month for the rest of the year. The next 5th Thursday is July 30th. Stephanie Slack will be heading up our group as Ronney Joe will be out of town.
Our topic is the societal impacts of technology, but because technology has drastically changed the way the entire world functions, the three authors have decided to narrow focus on two aspects of life: economics and mental health. While the two areas may seem incompatible, the economic state of a country directly affects the mental health of its citizens, and the economic estate relies on individuals. In order to accurately depict the two areas of effect, the author's focus is the United States, but compare technology use and mental health rates in the United States to the technology use and mental health rates of both China and Russia in order to generate a better understanding of American society. By understanding the impact of technology on economics and mental health, individuals are capable of making informed decisions about technology use, in doing so they directly impact their surrounding society.
I think the argument does effectively persuade its intended audience. The article is relevant and current. Even though there was not a lot of cited data the points that are brought up are convincing, like how Stanford has designed a curriculum to teach students how to evaluate the information they are looking at. The writer addresses the idea that many people who do not know how to find credible information believe things on the internet that could be very fake. This information causes them to look at issues and make decisions based of off these fake news articles. This idea is very relevant and even affects me when I question if something is real or not. I agree with the writer. All ages need to learn how to find credible information on the
It was the awards ceremony of the State Championship Gymnastics Competition of 2015. All the gymnasts were sitting in circles on the floor with their teams, listening to the announcer name off the state champions of the floor exercise. Many were crying, happy or sad tears I couldn’t tell, but quite frankly I didn’t care. I knew I didn’t place on floor so I laid back and stared at the ceiling thinking that if Newton Gymnastics did not get first in team placements, I’d probably refuse to move from the spot I was in until they changed the placement. We had worked far too hard for anything less than
“A few years back, Perez says, several young men visited him with YMCA baseball trophies they'd received as kids. And these weren't fancy, first place trophies. They were "tiny," given simply for participating. But the men had kept them and clearly valued them.” It was a motivation to those people, but to others it made that lack of motivation worse. Those awards, or lack there forth of, should motivate kids to play harder, longer, more or until those without an award do receive one. Even if the coach gives out a teamwork award to the entire team, it’s better than an award to show up and do
Everybody is different. Must of us have our own personal beliefs and opinions. It is our beliefs that make us who we are and differentiate us from everybody else. However, we often step aside when it comes to standing up for what we believe in.
The keywords include the following: “synthesize,” “at least three of the sources,” and “defends, challenges, or qualifies.” “Synthesize” indicates the kind of essay required. “At least three of the sources” specifies the amount of evidence required in the essay. “Defends, challenges, or qualifies” tells the writer to take a stance on the issue, which is a crucial element of the essay. These words are the most significant keywords because they either give a direct command to the writer or describe how the writer should qualify the essay’s points.
