Harmful Effects of Social Media on the Identity of Teenagers Thesis: The use of social media causes various harms to the identities of all around the world’ teenagers due to three reasons.
I. Despite the fact that the name of social media is social but teenagers become asocial as they use social media. A. Young people do not leave the social media when they meet their friends and they spend their time, which they can spend with their friends. B. Teenagers are separated from their family because they are in the social media although they are together with family.
II. Young people want to be popular with what they share with the time they use social media also like famous people.

They reflect their lives differently from their real life because of desire of popularity in social media. With that lying is becoming a habit. The young people who have not formed social identity easily express themselves with social media. They talk shamelessly and easily convey ideas. They try to be popular in social media to show that they are not alone. They want to have what they see in social media. The things they see in social media cause young people to feel insufficient. For example, when they see a sportsman who has photographed in the gym, they want to see themselves in the same way as they are. The girls learn artificial beauty by not admiring themselves as they see the popular people who make up. Young people become narcissists with social media. The characteristics of people with narcissism cannot tolerate unilateral hearing, selfishness, breaking rules, and criticism. What is the relation between of social media and narcissism? Narcissists often change situations to show themselves, constantly uploading their own photographs, showing everyone their own views. They do not accept criticism. They have a lot of self-confidence. The narcissists have arrogance in their attitude and behaviour. As AJ Agrawal
Studies have shown that social media has a direct correlation to a college students social life. Teenagers in this time
The age group that uses social media the most is 12-17 but the majority of people who use it all together are under the age of 30. 42% of adults online use social media and 97% of teens online use social media. Three in four teens access the internet on cell phones, tablets, and other mobile devices. Ironically, even though it is called social media, it actually causes a lot of people to become less connected with other people in real life. Steven Strogatz of Cornell University says “ social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections will weaken.” What this means is that we spend a lot of our time and energy online trying to create relationships with people online that distracts from real life people and social situations. Sure, social media is good for connecting
Many adolescents consider social media as a way to belong in accordance with societal expectations. With the development of the first recognisable social media site, Six Degrees, in 1997, several other sensations have been created. This site enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with others, beginning the social media revolution. During its peak in the 2000s, social media’s prominence occurred with the creation of several popular sites.
In contrast to all these, the internet (social media) has wrecked the mind of teenagers by inflicting them with negatives thoughts and ideas about how the world whirls around them. Then again, the essence of giving out their personal information to strangers they do not even know nothing about.
As this class has progressed, I have learned vast amounts of information on current societal issues, such as the inundation of technology and the value of college, through the assignments given in class. In the case of technology, I have discovered the extent of how influential it is on the youth of today, especially with teens and young adults. According to a Pew Research Center survey conducted by Amanda Lenhart, over 70% of teens use more than one social media platform. When taken into context, that amounts to millions of teens and young adults who can connect through social media. As a result, Forbes reporter AJ Agrawal notes that social media is one of the best sources of information for teens and young adults, influencing their outlook
There are some concerns and effects of technology and the use of social media. It is taking over our youth. I myself have gotten rid of my social media accounts. I feel other should as well, because it can be a danger to us and others. “Teenagers do not think before they post things on social media.”(E.g.
Social media is a very big deal in today's society, teenagers use it to socialize, find information and for entertainment. The first thing we could find on social media is really nice comments on teens photos. The second thing we could find is teens speaking out and being heard. Social media is helpful to teens because it boosts their confidence and lets teens have a voice. Despite this, some people say social media leads to cyberbullying, but only a small percent of teens said it made them feel less.
A majority of teens that use social media say that they feel more connected to their friends. This instant connection can have a positive influence over teens as peer acceptance can increase the self-esteem and well-being of adolescents (Valkenburg, Peter, & Schouten, 2006).
For Freshman Lyana Delgado at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, social media was key in establishing relationships with her neighbors before school started. By joining a Facebook group for residents of Bromley Hall, meeting her neighbors was not an uncomfortable or awkward task. (Rodriguez). This is just one of the many ways that social media sites, like Facebook, help guide face-to-face interaction and aide in creating relationships. Social media sites help teenagers meet people that have similar interests and experiences as them.Social media sites are not detrimental to teenagers because it allows teenagers to meet other likeminded people, and it makes young adults feel better about themselves.
2. Adolescent 's are now receiving new messages from social media, which then make them grow into a different person then they wouldn 't have without media.. During the ages groups
Social media is causing teenagers to be negatively influenced. This is an issue, because teenagers are extremely impressionable and social media is negatively impacting their lives each day whether they are conscious of this or not. One anonymous author who wrote the article, “Teen’s Use of Social Media: Positive or Negative?” states, “90 percent of teens have used social media” (Teens’ Use of Social Media). In this statement, it is clear that a large majority of teenagers have already been exposed to some type of social media. Since teenagers learn from direct observation and experience, it is a huge problem when they witness things on social media that concern sexist, racist, or homophobic content. Many teenagers even say that they have an addiction to social media. Teens who have had bad experiences online or who do not use social media on a regular basis said that they have a stronger urge to stay away from the internet. Even though there are many negatives to social media there are some positives as well. NickMcGillivray who is affiliated with the website, TurboFuture wrote the article, “What Are the Effects of Social Media on Youth.” In his article, he states, “There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs” (McGillivray). In this statement, he makes it clear, that social media has both positives and negatives. One positive of social media that impacts teenager’s lives would be, how they are able to communicate with their teachers and other classmates at any time. This makes it easier for
Thesis Statement: Social media is something a majority of people use but, causes a lot social issues and economical issues for adolescents.
A recent study titled #StatusofMind, surveyed young adults from the ages of 14 to 24 revealead the negative effects that social media has on one’s life. The study uncovered that social media brings upon undermining mental health issues, influences self-identity and degrades body image. Social media has made it easy to make anyone's life superficial, especially that of teenagers who are more susceptible to society's standards and expectations. Social media is infamous for creating phony personalities, bringing down self esteem, and influencing users to alter their identity because society has set standards for the “perfect” person.
Conventional wisdom has it that technology is an ever-growing industry. Whether it be cars, computers, machinery, or even homes, it is no doubt that it is opening a new window of opportunity. One piece of technology that has grown quite a bit in the last 10 years is the smart phone. This technology has unfolded a new way for people communicate, social media. According to Social Media Social Life: How Teens View Their Digital Lives, “Almost all teenagers in America today have used social
Some of the top benefits of social media over the years are that it is free to anyone, the content can get out to resources virtually immediately, and it can be delivered to a wide variety of people. For these reasons, communication through social media has become an extremely accessible and convenient way to communicate. It is also popular for those who need to be in contact with others. One example that comes to mind is a teenager who goes away on a trip to visit a friend or family. They can be hundreds of miles away but still talk to their parents as if they weren’t. Another example is a person who is shy and has a hard time making friends face-to-face, social media sites are a great way to meet people and build relationships.
