The Harmful Effects of GMOs
According to Philips, altering the genomes plants and animals is nothing new; specific traits have long been selected artificially in order to produce the desire result; i.e. sweet corn or hairless cats (2008). However, these variations have been limited in that only naturally occurring variations have been used (Philips, 2008). In recent years, researchers have crossed the line from the natural to the unnatural; advances in the field of genetic engineering have allowed researchers to have complete control over what genetic changes take place and what the final product will look like, taste like, feel like, etc. Philips indicates that with modern technology, “…we can incorporate new genes from one species

Although it appears that both sides have justifiable stances, after exploring both sides of the argument, it is evident that the risks and threats associated with using GMOs despite not knowing what the long-term effects might be, do not outweigh the means. The risks and threats of using GMOs will now be discussed.
The Harms Associated with GMOs There have been numerous reports revealing the negative and potentially disastrous effects of GMOs on the farming industry, individual health, and the environment. In 2009, the National Academy of Science released a report which detailed the negative effects associated with GM products; of these negative effects: “…new allergens, toxins, disruptive chemicals, soil polluting ingredients, mutated species, and unknown protein combinations into our bodies and into the whole environment” were listed (Khan, Muafia, Nasreen, & Salariya, 2012). Khan, Muafia, Nasreen, and Salariya provide a detailed report which goes into further detail regarding these hazards providing evidence which support the risk associated with GM products. Essentially, there are two categories of risks – health and environmental, which are discussed below. However, there is also a significant impact on farming that will also be discussed further below.
Health Risks Associated with GMOs In regards to health risks, Khan, Muafia, Nasreen, and Salariya provide a
As said before, GMOs are genetically modified organisms, and can be dangerous, so experts say. They say that the GMO process causes diseases such as cancer or diabetes, and some also say that GM foods can cause allergic reactions. They are saying this because, as they have discovered, some companies have mixed protein from nuts and inserted into beans, which can be harmful
The American Academy Of Environmental Medicine have found out, Gmos also cause organ damage, gastrointestinal and immune system disorders. They also discovered the GMOs leave material behind that leads to long terms problems
Undoubtedly, GMOś are unhealthy and are bad for our health. The farmers contaminate their crops with pesticides and many more harmful substance.
GMOs can cause environmental damage and health problems for consumers. Anti-GMO organization Center for Food Safety said genetic engineering of plants and animals is, potentially. Lallanilla refers to GMO crops as “Frankenfoods.” The long-term effect of GMOs still remains unknown. They have been linked to toxic allergic reactions, sick, sterile and dead livestock, and damage to virtually every organ studied in lab animals.
According to Jeffrey Smith, this process can cause the organisms to have unknown effects such as toxins, diseases, and nutritional problems (2006). Along with that, the health risks from consuming products containing GMOs are enough to turn people away. According to the American Academy of Environmental Science, “several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food consumption including infertility, immune dysregulation, accelerated aging, dysregulation of genes associated with cholesterol synthesis, insulin regulation, cell signaling, and protein formation, and changes in the liver, kidney, spleen, and gastrointestinal system”(2009). Finding out that GMOs caused all of these issues to animals, people will start to question the safety of the GM food products. This alone can scare the consumers and discourage them from purchasing products containing GMOs. However, that may no longer be a choice
While the agricultural world is working hard to make positive influences on more efficient farming, individuals have treated GMO’s as a negative alteration in their produce. Farmers and researchers in the agricultural world claim no harm can be done by them. GMO’s have not yet been proven to be harmful to humans and have, in fac,t had a positive impact on the food industry today.
Despite the popular unfavorable side of GMOs, little to be known there could be a good side. Many farmers, scientists, and consumers say GMOs are helpful. Crops that are genetically engineered to fight diseases are saving not only the foods we love, but industries that grow them (Food Dialogues). With GMOs less water or pesticides are needed to grow food on less land. Scientists are working on a variety of genetically modifies seeds to create a hypoallergenic
GMOs are bad for your body, bad for the community, bad for farmers and bad for the environment. This is why: The health consequences of eating genetically modified organisms are largely unknown. Genetically engineered foods have not been shown to be safe to eat and may have unpredictable consequences.
When it comes to the topic of whether genetic modification are safe or unsafe for the animals, the environment and for human consumption, some of us will readily agree that they are in fact very dangerous for everyone. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how exactly they affect everyone. Whereas some are convinced that GMOs are not safe for anyone, others maintain that they are not a hazard to anyone. I agree that GMOs are not safe because while doing my research I found concrete evidence that proves that they are unsafe for consumption. All production of GMOs should be discontinued immediately since they are a danger for our environment and for ourselves.
Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs) are known to cause a swarm of controversy; a lot of experts disagree with the notion that if it’s economically successful, then the potential health risks found in Genetically Modified Foods can be overlooked.
why is GMO’s so harmful to humans? Many people are wondering about whether consuming food that comes , people and indicate some facts and Although genetically modified food may cause some product to not be labeled may cause serious disease instabilities of the inserted gene because of four reasons. crops can support and supply more population with the food needed in the future. crops can also carry beneficial medicines and vaccines to parts of the world where it is currently too costly to store and prepare them. Organisms are exposed to reaction or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change, and the humans, selective breeding, plant breeding, animal breeding, somaclonal variation
This essay is about Genetically modified organisms, in this paper, however, modified food will be talked about more so than any other modified organism. Genetically engineered food is, in some cases, is beneficial but to every good thing, there must be at least one bad thing. Many scientists and researches have been led to believe GMO’s will harm the body, but others believe it does not. With the mass production of GMO’s some think world hunger can be reduced and become a manageable issue.
GMOs are said to be even healthier and safer than non GMOs. But we don’t know if there are any negative (both long-term and short-term) effects associated with GMOs. GMOs could cause lifelong problems like for example: if somebody ate a strawberry that’s been genetically modified with a certain virus to
Breck Erickson “Based on animal research with GM (genetically modified) foods, the American Academy of Environmental Medicines (AAEM), an international organization of physicians, says that there are serious health risks associated with eating GM foods.” for these reasons we should not allow farmers to use GM products (2011, Smith). Based on many studies there are very many reasons to ban GMOs (Genetically Mortified Organisms). Although there are a few positive effects to GMOs like not having to spray the fields with different herbicides and pesticides, there are also many unfavorable reasons to use and ban GMOs. These include slight differences in yields, the inability to track GMOs in sugars, and the negative health effects.
Much of the public concern surrounding the safety of GMOs stems from the process of actually creating them. This is admittedly not a natural process, which is a surefire way to raise critic’s eyebrows in doubting their safety. However, there is no evidence that supports these myths. The Committee on Genetically Engineered Crops, The National Academy of Science, and the Board on Agriculture and Natural Recourses all agree after extensive testing and observation that there is no additional harm in the consumption of GMO food. The research conducted in animal studies, as well as chemical analysis of the crops, show no indication that GMOs are negatively affecting human health. The next allegation hurled at GMOs is that they may have
