Everyone was curious of Harry because of his legacy and parentage. During Harry’s first day in his Potions class, his potion teacher Snape is very disappointed with him because he does not know “‘the difference...between monkshood and wolfsbane’" (Rowling, Sorcerer 's Stone 109). Harry does not understand why others had such high expectations of him because he never wanted them and starts to resent them when he cannot produce the results that everyone expects of him. As Harry grows up, other people 's expectations of him grow too. When Voldemort rises back to power, Harry learns from a prophecy that between Voldemort and him, “either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives” (Rowling, Order of the Phoenix 841). Harry realizes the he is expected to kill Voldemort and again has to struggle with these expectations that he did not chose himself. Harry erupts in disbelief, as he does not want to be the Chosen One. He cries out that Voldemort “‘might have chosen wrong! ... He might have marked the wrong person!’” (Rowling, Order of the Phoenix 842). After the death of his mentor, Harry finally faces his expectations and decides that if he does not try to overcome the challenges that everyone expects him to, then there would be no one
Charles Dickens’ aptly titled novel Great Expectations focuses on the journey of the stories chief protagonist, Pip, to fulfill the expectations of his life that have been set for him by external forces. The fusing of the seemingly unattainable aspects of high society and upper class, coupled with Pip’s insatiable desire to reach such status, drives him to realize these expectations that have been prescribed for him. The encompassing desire that he feels stems from his experiences with Mrs. Havisham and the unbridled passion that he feels for Estella. Pip realizes that due to the society-imposed caste system that he is trapped in, he will never be able to acquire
Harry Potter at first didn’t know anyone and didn’t know anything about Hogwarts. His goal was to fit in. Throughout Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Harry seems to make new goals for himself. Then one of his quests/goals is to go and stop who he thought was Snape but it was actually Professor Quirrell and Voldemort. Harry Potter’s quest changed from fitting into saving Hogwarts from Voldemort, or as they say He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named. In trying to fulfill his quest he met some friends and of course some
Harry Potter is a fictional character invented by J.K Rowling in the series of seven books starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher 's Stone and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Wikipedia, 2015). Harry is the main character in this series whose parents died when he was young and he was brought up by his aunt and uncle (Philosopher’s Stone, 1997, p.5). Harry was neglected by his aunt and uncle (Philosopher’s Stone, 1997, p.27). Harry is presented a whole new reality when he goes to the zoo one day and his integration into the magical world changes him from the foundation. These changes within him will be analysed using the developmental psychology theories of Lawrence Kohlberg and Erik Erikson to explain how the environment aided or obstructed Harry’s development.
How do you define a hero? Some may define a hero with the ability to fly, or run fast; to others a hero may be saving someone who is in dangers; others may define a hero as one who is able to help another in various ways. Harry Potter is a orphan boy who find out he is a wizard and goes to a magic school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While he is at Hogwarts, he develops his supernatural qualities, goes on a journey, and defeats evil. Although Harry Potter is not a Epic hero in the same way as Odysseus, Harry Potter still fulfills the stages of epic hero cycle and proves that he is a hero by overcome obstacles and showing his bravery, and selflessness.

Other obstacles come to place when Harry travels down the trap door into the chambers; such as devil’s snare, a human wizard’s chess game, and the room of keys (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone). The series of tests make Harry’s mission difficult; however, the knowledge he gains from the unsuccessful trials bring him closer to his main goal. These minor bumps in Harry’s journey strengthen him emotionally and physically, readying him to defeat the traitor at the end of his succession of tests. Joseph Campbell once said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. According to his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, a hero could be anyone. In his book, he introduces ideas that suggest that all stories follow a pattern. He tells us that the hero of the story goes through a 12 step process. They are introduced in their world, presented with tasks and training, face death, and ultimately retrieves some type of treasure. This is true for most stories, Including Harry Potter during the movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Throughout the movie, Harry successfully goes through all of the stages.
Sometimes people don’t appreciate what they have until they lose it. They set standards for people that are unattainable for them. These standards make the person only want the person with all the standards. In Great Expectation, Pip, Charles Dickens gets Pip, the main character, trapped in this mindset. As a child Pip is growing up in a blacksmith household.
If there are two names that can be recognized anywhere in the world, one would definitely be Harry Potter, and the other would surely be Jesus Christ. On one hand, Harry Potter is known as the protagonist of the best-selling Harry Potter book series, which was written by JK Rowling. He is a boy wizard who encountered many different trials and tribulations during his stay in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The seven books have been read by millions of children and adults all over the world, and its popularity was evident when four books in the series were on the New York Times bestseller list all at the same time (Brown 32). On the other hand, Jesus Christ is one of the main religious figures of Christianity,
Harry Potter is a hero that is well known to almost all people of all ages as the hero that thrived in the magical wizarding world that lied in the most unnoticeable places in London, England. In the novel Great Expectations, Charles Dickens uses hyperbole, repetition and imagery to illustrate how allowing expectations to dull reality leads to unhappiness. For example, when Pip addresses Biddy and explains, “`Biddy,...I am not at all happy as I am. I am disgusted with my calling and with my life. I have never taken to either, since I was bound. Don't be absurd.'” (Ch 17). This texts illustrates how Pip believes that it is impossible for him to be content with a normal life not of high class, but instead thinks he is destined to be a gentleman. This is ironic because Pip is unhappy about being “bound” to good, honest labour, but is not disturbed by how he is more deeply bound to his expectations. The word “bound” emphasizes how Pip relates his unhappiness
Superheroes helped find shared values through these socio economic challenges. In the same way Lt Leo Gradwell helped the people on his group of boats, as well as the people of the USSR and the Allies, to trust each other, and step by step, through extraordinarily tough circumstances, to persist in honouring his task of bringing relief, whilst not losing his men.
It is human nature to make mistakes. Failures in life are unavoidable. Some failures, however, can be prevented by carefully examining one’s place in the society. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Pip was setup to change his entire lifestyle and become a gentleman. Because Pip was so focused on obtaining acceptance from the society, he failed to form close relationships. It wasn’t until Pip discovered who his real benefactor was, that Pip’s view of reality changed, and he became one with himself. As the title of this novel suggests, Pip had many expectations in life, but Pip’s desire to reach unachievable goals led him to numerous disappointments with himself and those around him; however, in the end of the novel, Pip learns valuable lessons that come from failure.
Charles Dickens wrote this story in the Victorian times. Hence we seem to think what ‘does he mean’ by “Great Expectations”. By us the readers, knowing and understanding what it means, we can get a rough idea of what the story is like. By Great Expectations we mean having high expectations for life, class and dreams for a better life.
