After the success of her popular Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling has recently branched out from writing children’s literature. Her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, explores more mature topics and is aimed at a new demographic than her previous works. She challenges social issues with her dark themes and her impeccable writing style captures the wide range of problems at the heart of a small town. It becomes more apparent throughout the novel that each character is connected in a web of misfortunes. Each individual has their own flaws and it becomes more apparent that there are additional underlying issues at the center of the “pretty little town” (Tait). J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, Krystal Weedon is the troubled hero of the novel as she struggles to overcome difficulties in her life after the death of her mentor, Barry Fairbrother. The author behind this controversial narrative has become one of the world’s most decorated authors due to the widespread success of her novels. Although she is well-known today, Rowling had very humble beginnings. Born on July 31, 1965 to Peter and Anne Rowling, Joanne became the newest addition to her family beside her older sister, Diana. During her childhood, Rowling lived in several different places throughout Great Britain. Her family moved from Chipping Sodbury to Winterbourne, and then again to Tutshill (“J.K. Rowling”). Rowling took an interest to writing at a young age and began composing stories at the age of
She grew up in the backwoods of eastern Kentucky, among plains and pastures where she and her siblings roamed and read every book their family owned (Kingsolver). Her love of literature was born at an early age. Even though
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland into a Christian family. His parents were Albert James Lewis and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. He had a brother named Warren Hamilton Lewis. When he was younger, he had a dog named Jacksie, who was hit by a car. He “changed” his name to Jacksie which he later shortened to Jack. A name he would go by the rest of his life. As a child, Lewis and his brother loved Beatrix Potter’s books and often made their own stories and own worlds. One of those worlds was called

The overwhelming emotions that come from reading literature are crucial to finding the right novel. It has to make me cry, laugh, or form an attachment to the character. I have to become both mentally and emotionally invested in the book because that causes me to continue reading. Jellicoe Road is one of the books that feed my curiosity. In this book, Taylor Markham goes through her own journey while another story is being told. Taylor Markham was left by her mother at a 7-Eleven store that was located on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven years old. She does not have any memory of her father except for one when she was sitting on his shoulders. As she reaches her eleventh year at the Jellicoe School, she becomes the leader of her House. After school hours, the adults do not know what the students are up to. There is a territory war between her school, the “Townies”, and the “Cadets”, who are the other two house leaders from a school located in Sydney. As she
In the book Outliers, sociologist Annette Lareau states that concerted cultivation is a middle class “parenting style” that attempts to actively “foster and assess a child’s talents, opinions and skills,” granting the child earlier advantages such as self esteem and additional education (Gladwell 104). In Rowling’s early childhood, she was often encouraged by those around her to write when she first showed an affinity towards writing. Both of Rowling’s parents were very fond of reading, and Rowling remembers that her childhood house was full of books, giving Rowling endless books to read ("JK Rowling Biography." , Bibliography). Her grandmother often praised her writing and gave her an autobiography of a female writer by the name of Jessica Mitford, inspiring Rowling to become a writer as well (“People’s World.”). By having parents who were fond of reading and an environment that gave her unlimited access to books, Rowling was exposed to what would later become her passion early on. Like her parents, Rowling learned to love reading, and her grandmother even encouraged her, pushing Rowling on the path of becoming a writer. As Rowling grew older, she would create stories specifically tailored for each of her friends during lunchtime, all centered around heroic deeds. Her friends were delighted to hear themselves placed into one of Rowling’s stories, and Rowling would constantly think of new and exciting tales in order to please them ("J. K. Rowling Biography." -
For the first fifty years after its publication, Charlotte Temple by Susanna Rowson endured as the bestselling novel in America. Its popularity in part came from concerned parents who wanted their daughters to learn the lessons that the novel had to offer. The character of Mademoiselle La Rue from this story helps to convey one of these lessons. Susanna Rowson uses the morally corrupt, yet socially successful, character of La Rue in Charlotte Temple to show that human beings should not confuse moral virtues with societal virtues.

Rowling had an early start to beginning to her career path. Rowling’s mother was a big influence on who she became today. The start of her career was very early. Rowling loved to read and write even as a young child. Her favorite books included the stories of “The Little White Horse” by Elizabeth Goudge, “Manxmouse” by Paul Gallico, and “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis. As a young six year old, she wrote a story about a rabbit who was named Rabbit. In 1990, she started writing the first Harry potter book after a train ride with her boyfriend. She has said that she had many ideas but she did not have a pen on the train and why very shy at this point, so she didn't want to ask for one. When she got home, she started writing all her ideas and the first chapter. She wrote nearly every night and then sent the first three chapters to an agent in 1996. Rowling has always had thoughts of publishing. She even thought as a six year old to do this, sadly this never happened and we will never get to read the story of Rabbit the rabbit. She had to overcome the decease of her mother (who she was close to) to continue writing and coming up with ideas. It is a good thing she did, otherwise we would not have the amazing works of fantasy today. J.K. Rowling has always been interested in her field of

The Casual Vacancy follows the lives of eight households in the aftermath of Barry Fairbrother’s death (Foreman). Through these characters, Rowling explores the complexity of human nature and actions driven by personal bias. As a result, no character in the novel is fully likeable because of the troubling revelations made by the reader about each individual. With this, the reader may place the characters on a scale of disagreeability in comparison to the other residents. The disconcerting flaws exhibited by each character eliminate any chance for improvement in the reader’s mind (Perez).
During her adolescent years, Joanne was not particularly close with her father, Peter Rowling. This distance exacerbated after Joanne’s father had remarried to another woman, one year after the death of Anne Volant Rowling in December 1990. Joanne and Dianne Rowling were strongly against this remarriage. Furthermore, the relationship between Joanne and her father aggravated, as Peter sold a rare collection of “Harry Potter” first edition novels to cover his £100,000 debts. These major events caused Joanne and Peter Rowling to ‘share’ an estranged relationship with each other.
