I always hear how special Hawaii is to the world, that it is where the people take care of the land as well as each other, that its aloha spirit. But I never knew what was the reason why, for me, growing up my parents never showed any signs of the aloha spirits that often, usually they would be very distant with people especially with family members. Since they believed that the only reason they are nice to you is to benefit themselves. So I was very shy and quiet to distant myself from my peers at school because I knew that they might just want to benefit themselves only. American Hawaii Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, it’s nice year-round weather, and its culture. Thousands of vacationers come to Hawaii each year to get away from the stressful city and relax. But do they know how cruel the Americans were to the natives? Do they know how we corrupted their culture and their religion? Do they know how Hawaii really became a state? Probably not. When most people think of Hawaii, they think of happy Hawaiian babes hula dancing and palm trees swaying in the warm breeze. Hawaii has still held on to many of their traditions although they were invaded by Americans. But you have to go to a museum to see their old way of life. Hawaii is now populated mostly by Americans.

Culture is defined as a whole basis of knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, and customs that define a person or group of persons. Culture differs is so many ways and that culture is what defines each of person as an individual. This concept comes from the cultural that was taught and developed from after birth and through our adolescent years. Our culture is the foundation of who we are. It identifies the lifestyle and pursuits that are practiced in the group of people we interact with in our society. Culture beliefs, values, and practices are learned from birth.

According to Clark (1986), Polynesians brought domesticated pigs, dogs, and chickens as food sources along their voyage. The pig was an important food source to Native Hawaiian Society. They would feed and fatten the pig and cook it on taro. It was also a sacrificial offering in the Hawaiian Kingdom. The sacrificing of the pig symbolized purification through feasting. In modern society, the Luau is a feasting event that has been a universal form for celebrating the Hawaiian culture.

On the 21st of August 1959, a small colony of inhabited Polynesian volcanic rock located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean became the 50th state named “Hawai’i”. Before Hawai’i became the 50th State, foreigners from the United States attempted to annex Hawai’i from its people and the Hawaiian Monarch for political and military gains. It all started as far back as 1893 when Hawai’i was ruled by Hawaiian Kings and Queens. All three attempts at annexation the United States Diplomats and foreigners failed until 1959 when Hawai’i declared Statehood. The United States Government and its political leaders celebrated along with a small portion of native islanders but sadden and dismayed the majority of native people felt it’s island being stolen

Hawaii was once filled with warm weather and aloha spirit. Well, atleast thats what I once remembered. Two centuries ago, America sent out a signal to Shuttle Delta 400, a satellite research base stationed up in space. Without Intelligence knowing, the signal was accidentally transmitted to Russia's Satellite defence, triggering their nuclear weapons on their own territory. It was just the beginning of World War III. For years both countries fought, one seeking revenge, and another seeking apologies and pity. The war escalated into a nuclear war, killing those by the hundreds, and vaporizing others by the thousandths. America, the land of the free, the land of the brave , and the land of justice was left with nothing but rebel and crime.

The main way I plan on giving back to Hawaii is to make sure that everyone I come across knows that this land has shaped me into what I am today. Akin to a piece of clay, I was molded into all that I am by my environment and the people who cared for me. Making sure that everyone knows, no matter the part of the country I am in, that I am from Hawaii. My major concern is to be successful and for everyone around the country to know that people from this state are capable and amazing, in ways that people from every other state are. I want people to know, I’m giving back in a way that isn’t really physical or tangible in any sense of the word, but in the recognition that I want this state and the people to receive.
