Health literacy is the knowledge of basic health information and services that allows individuals to make good health decisions. Both the individual and the professional are responsible for one’s health literacy. That is why it is important that the government continues to enforce licensures across health professions, so that patients receive the best of instruction. In my expected career, speech language pathology, health literacy plays an important role because it is through effective communication skills that individuals make appropriate health decisions. I want to dedicate my life to being an SLP, so that patients with communication disorders can be health literate and their overall health improve.
People with speech and language disorders are at high risks for low health literacy because their impairment in the ability to receive and comprehend information keeps them from receiving health information effectively. Speech language pathologists, SLPs, are specialists in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication, voice, and swallowing disorders. In Texas, the introduction of House Bill 1684 has brought a lot of anxiety to both contemporary audiologists and SLPs. House Bill 1684 would eliminate licensure requirements in the State of Texas, placing patients at significant risk of harm, malpractice. Low quality care could possibly result. (why would that be bad?) An insignificant dollar value to renew the licensures is totally trivial, compared to the mass amount of people who could suffer from this bill; professionals and patients.
