Herbal medicine is an aspect of the medical field that seems to have been overlooked in the past few decades, with the majority of focus on being western medicine. For thousands of years, indigenous peoples, and explorers alike counted on herbal remedies and medicines for treatment of wounds, personal hygiene, and curing sickness. The Aztec were a group that held a vast array of knowledge and skill in natural medicine, and even invested a great deal of energy into further researching herbal medicine. Unfortunately, Spanish friars destroyed all of the Aztec’s written records of botanical successes. After all, the priests considered the Aztecs’ as savage at the time. Even though there is much to be learned about Aztec natural medicine, there were many records kept by employees of the more enlightened members of the Spanish government. In this essay, the author will cover the few aspects known about Aztec medicine including the research they carried out in the name of Herbal medicine, a historical context behind medicinal practices among the Aztec, and also the plants and their uses. As stated previously, the Aztec invested a great deal of time, and resources into botanical research for medicinal purposes. The Huaxtepec garden, for example, devoted entirely to this purpose, had a seven-mile circumference. Montezuma 's gardens are described by Cervantes de Salazar in his1554 book entitled "Dialogues," and here we learn that there were some two thousand species of
“Use of herbs as medicines dates back to the beginning of civilized man. The earliest known written records of herbal medicines were inscribed on a six thousand year old clay tablet written by the Sumerians, who lived on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now known as Iraq”(History).
As historians overview the history of the Aztecs they need to make sure to emphasize the importance of the human sacrifices that we completed by the Aztecs daily. This feature of the Aztecs is more notable because they deliberately didn’t occupy land for later sacrifices, it was the reason for many’s death, and they were willing to sacrifice warriors. It therefore must then be clear that the human sacrifices of the Aztecs must be emphasized more than the agriculture of the
The ancient Aztec civilization is usually thought of as a barbaric, unintelligent people throughout modern society. This could be an ideal carried down from the Spaniards that concord the native lands or even something as simple as today’s society creating overblown stereotypes because of conjoined lack of understanding and overall knowledge. But, because of the extensive research and studies done by Miguel León-Portilla we are able to discover the true nature of the Aztec peoples way of life. Within the book “Aztec Thought and Culture” the author explains the develop of the Aztec civilization through education and philosophy as well as describing the Aztec people as an advanced society rather than the popular belief of a savage people and culture.
Not soon after the first Europeans set foot on American soil at the end of the fifteenth century, they began take note with varying degrees of fascination and revulsion of a strange indigenous custom psychedelic plant ritual. They were later to recognize this occurrence as an indispensable aspect of aboriginal religion and ritual in many parts of the New World. Intoxication by certain plants were ascribed supernatural powers by indigenous people.
The scientific interest in cocaine was part of an awakening of Peruvian scientific nationalism. Lima’s medical elites and modern chemistry transformed the coca plant into medicinal cocaine in the nineteenth century. Peruvians took an herb that held deep cultural meanings in Incan history and changed it into an exclusive and modern good. This early study of coca combined science and patriotism. Peruvian scientist’s proximity and experiences lent a privileged place as compared to scientists in Europe. With help from Peruvians like Moreno y Maíz and J. C. Ulloa, elite scientific nationalism made local and traditional coca and universal and scientifically modern cocaine into national subjects, or what Gootenberg calls “highland
I also really want to know whether some uses have died out or changed after contact and an increase of integration with the white settlers. For example whether there was a plant mixture to cure or minimize the effects of small pox and whether that same plant is now used for another medicinal purpose as a result of small pox no longer being a threat. It was also quickly touched on the video about providing herbal medication to individuals with known substace abuses problems and asking them to try and substance while taking medication. I would like to know more as to why whether it makes the treatment not work at all, alter the possible affects like western medications or if it is has separate problems than western
These natural herbs not only provide healing purposes to the Aztecs but also created a living for them as well. Throughout Mexico, marketplaces are important areas that provide the sale and distribution of not only medicine but other very useful sources (“Medicines”). Aztecs have used markets as a way to sell the different medicines they make and earn a profit and living for their families. Along with medicine, Aztecs also used the plants to sell different potions that were believed to heal the strongest of diseases and instill or break different magic spells that were practiced (“Aztec Medicine”). The use of natural herbs was a way of life for Aztecs. For many, different combinations were the answer to any problem that life could face them with.
The roles of women are useful to historians because they provide an insight into the life experiences, cultures, thoughts, and every day life of a historical period. Similarly this essay will examine the roles of women, which provide insight into the Aztec civilization’s many strengths. The Aztec child bearer/warrior, priestess and sexual being will be analyzed to display that gender relations were complementary that produced equality. The midwife and weaver reveal that the Aztec’s specialization proved successful through fields like medicine and the market. Finally the Aztec daughter and mother will be examined to show that the Aztec’s had a strong socialization system established through education and the family. For these reasons
Many ideas have come into circulation explaining the Aztecs population loss, disease, drought, famine, are all suspected reasons. In this article, the writes describe the epidemic of cocoliztli and “megadrought”. Specifically they claim the drought may have caused the spike in diseases of that time. They provide evidences based on tree rings found in Mexico, it indicates both of the major droughts occurred during both major Aztec epidemics. Although, the Aztecs use of ritual sacrifice is not mentioned in this article, noting other possibilities will benefit my research proposal by adding an opposite view as to why the Aztec civilization diminished.
Mesoamerica was once a place filled with growing, ruthless empires and civilizations, although not one was like the Aztecs and their empire. Although they started off with a humble beginning, they quickly grew into a great civilization that dominated present day Central Mexico. They conquered and expanded into an empire stronger than the other neighboring empires. The heart of the Aztec empire, Tenochtitlan, was a grand capital filled with many people and astounding temples. The Aztecs were also ahead of their time with fully-functional government and irrigation systems. They continue to astound many historians with their diverse way of life. They impacted the way of life for many people today with their customs and ways of life. Throughout the years, the Aztecs were able to grow and prosper with their sufficient supply of agriculture and blessed fertile lands of the Mexican Valley, and demonstrated to be an important part of Mexican heritage. Because of their history, unique culture, and beautiful architecture, the Aztec Civilization truly is one of Mesoamerica’s most influential early empires.
For this paper I will be discussing and comparing the medical practices and belief system surrounding medicine in the Maya and Aztec cultures. This will be accomplished through a discussion of the archaeological evidence at ancient sites, testimony from the Spanish conquerors who were witness to these practices and modern medical practices in rural areas of Mesoamerica that have persisted from ancient times to the present day. These methods have been tested and found to be somewhat effective in treating a wide range of ailments and are still useful today. (CITE)
