High School Activities Worth Joining
So you are going to be in or currently in high school. Great! These can be the best years of your life. You better make the most of it.
These activities are a great way to get social (especially if you are an introvert). So don’t skip them while in high school.
A Sport, Any Sport!
Before you say you aren’t a jock, just hear me out.
You are young and probably injury-free. This is the BEST time to get into the shape of your life. You don’t want to start when you are in your 20s or 30s. You will be so far behind by then you’ll probably never catch up. Besides, even by then you might have chronic injuries you are fighting. Trust me, your body will just get more and more injuries as you get older.
Anyone can tell you consistency is key to getting into shape. And once you get into college and your career, you’ll find out being consistent on your own is virtually impossible. Life just gets in the way. But in high school, you have to go to class every day and if your class is a sport, you’ll never miss a workout.
“But I don’t want to get injured!”
I completely understand. Injuries, especially chronic ones, are some of the most frustrating and depressing things you’ll experience in life. The simple solution is to join a sport that is relatively injury free such as tennis, swimming, golf, and dance if they offer it. Yes, you can get injured in these sports, but it is not like football where you can literally break
When students participate in extracurricular activities they learn lessons and concepts of leadership, teamwork, organization, analytical thinking, problem solving, and time management. In high school if a student wants to do a sport or other activity they will pick the activity that they like and enjoy. This is the kind of decision making skill that could help determine the type of career path for a student. By participating in extracurricular activities youth can find something they enjoy learn to use this in a career. “Participating in certain extracurricular activities having to do with the field that the student is interested in could help them find a job. If someone is looking at a resume for a potential employee, and they see they have experience or interest in what they are looking for, they will be more likely to hire that person” (Massoni). Having been apart of a particular extracurricular activity can be a positive influence in a job resume. This will cause students to find a new ambition in a career. Even on college applications these activities will affect if a student will be accepted, and in some circumstances many activities can earn a student thousands of dollars in scholarships (Massoni). Extracurricular activities can benefit students in teaching them long term commitments. When youth participate in
Tendonitis, concussions, shin splints, torn ACL’s, pulled groin muscles, sprained ankles, dislocations, and torn rotator cuffs are just a some of the many injuries you can receive while participating in any type of sport. Many athletes’ injuries start small, and escalate depending on how hard and how often the person works. This leaves two of the biggest decisions for injured athletes. One, knowing when to stop before they hurt themselves more. Two, deciding when to get come back. Even after surgeries, physical therapy, and time off, these can be two of the hardest decisions an athlete can make after being injured.
Many people say that high school should be the best four years of your life. Most of us entered high school with this idea in mind, determined to enjoy every second of it. The confidence and energy that we held that first September allowed us to dive right into what has been an amazing four
You get to wake up earlier and do less work. Next year I probably will be wishing the same thing, but to be in middle school. I am excited for highschool next year, but also nervous. I am petrified of getting lost or walking into the wrong classroom. Many of my freshman friends tell me they love highschool.
Getting hurt while playing sports is no fun, especially if it happens to you twice in the same season or should I say year. Having to watch your teammates train and compete while you are sitting on the sidelines really stinks, in fact it sucks.
Prior to this injury I had sports that I enjoyed and more importantly, kept me in shape. Its really discouraging at the age of 16 to hear that there is a high possibility you may never be able to do what you love again. It has been like a big game of chutes and ladders where the chutes represent, the times of surgery and pain and having to work hard and the ladders represent me getting back on my feet and climbing all the up to reach my goal . Chutes and ladders is such a tedious game involving a lot of ups and downs which correlates highly with how knee surgery
But I promise you, you will blink and it will be over. Do not wish away your high school years. There will be times in which you will say "I hate high school, I’m ready to graduate." In fact, during your senior year, you will develop a serious case of "senioritis." Even in those times, do not wish for time to go by faster. Enjoy your high school years. Some of the things you experience during high school you may never experience again. Freshmen, it goes by quicker than you think.I know the thought of high school can be intimidating, but I promise it is not as scary as it seems. If you take the time to get involved and put yourself out there, you will have a blast in high school. So get involved and make new friends. Stay on top of your schoolwork. Ask questions and make mistakes. High school is a place to discover your strengths and weaknesses, and figure out who you are. I was once in your shoes. I asked the same questions and felt the same fear some of you freshmen are feeling. The fear does not last forever. You will find your niche in high school, and once you do, you have the power to have four amazing
Eventually though, my frustration through this injury disappeared, and I can contribute that to physical therapy. I was entranced by the profession. Keeping active and healthy while helping all sorts of people regain their confidence in their own bodies. The environment was relaxing yet productive and I immediately felt at ease. I could trust these people and they could get me out of my slump. As I finished up my rehabilitation (that went without a hitch I’m glad to say) I realized that a job like physical therapy was something I felt an extreme passion for.I could see myself as a Physical Therapist, and the qualities clicked with me; patience, empathy, optimism and determination. I may have given up football, but a new path opened up for me. The ascent into my future had finally begun, and stopping is not an
Sport injuries are impossible to avoid. All athletes at one point or another in their life experience some kind of injury. With injuries, they can begin gradually and worsen over time without proper care or they can come on at any given point. Shin splints can easily turn into stress fractures, but anyone in football can get tackled and end up with a broken bone or torn tendon in a matter of seconds. Athletes are known to push through the pain in practices in fear of not being able to compete in the upcoming game.We are so dedicated and passionate to our sport that even the thought of taking time off to heal is far from actually happening until the injury becomes serious. Athletes become hostile when it comes to the physical aspect of the recovery, however they do not put nearly as much time into the
Same goes for workout at home. It takes a serious amount of dedication to not fall off and most people do not reach this point until they are months or years into their new fitness life style. (Personal story about highschool to now)
I remember being an anxious eighth grader thinking about starting my freshman year of high school. We went from being at the top of the school to being at the bottom of a new one. All of our middle school teachers always told us about how our high school teachers wont “hold our hands” and how we will be on our own. Being in high school is completely different than being in elementary school and middle school. Its almost like each year we have more and more freedom but more responsibility.
My experience with injuries aren’t a whole lot, because I would like to say I don’t put myself into situation to get hurt a whole lot. I have faced a lot of bruises in lacrosse and they hurt, but they eventually go away. I have been in a lot of pain after a few slashes to my hand, I came out right away because of the pain. I hung in there and finished and it eventually went away. I’ve never broken a bone, and I have never gotten hurt to the point where I won’t play and go out and give everything I
Hello Oleg, you are 14 years old now, just going into grade 9. Your high school experience is going to be a blast, but if you'd like to make it even better I'd recommend you listen to what I have to say.
It is important for adolescents to participate in extracurricular activities. Student who participate in these activities improve their academic scores and social life. Extracurricular activities can also help reduce many peer pressure related problems. “They enrich the lives of the students, their families and our communities. These activities create well rounded children who learn what their interests and talents are because they have been exposed to such opportunities” (Extracurricular Activities, Blogadmin). For most adolescents extracurricular activities should be required among what they do outside of school.
Now high school can be a big pain in the butt, but in reality, what would you be doing at home if you weren't in school? Probably just sitting down and eating. High school is a big responsibility and a big change. Teacher's don't mean to scare you by giving you a ton of homework they're just getting you ready for the rest of your life because that is their job. You do get a lot of freedom, stress really kicks in and the people in the hallway can get on your nerves, but in the end High School is a great
