Leadership is a constantly changing role; to be considered a good leader one must adapt to the changing times while upholding established values. While leadership is a position of status and importance, it is first and foremost an opportunity to set an example. In my experiences with leadership, whether it be a captain of a sports team or a leader in an organization, leadership is a learning process. Rarely do excellent leaders appear out of thin air with a well-formulated plan of success. An individual with the desire to be a leader must dedicate themselves to serving the people they plan to lead. My chief leadership opportunity in high school as captain of the cross country team began long before my senior year. I had to earn my position
I believe that a strong leader should lift people up and put other people first. A leader builds followers with their knowledge and will to want to make people around them better. In my experiences my captains or coaches ,for the most part, have been able to make us better day in and day
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
Leadership is a personal skill that has to be developed and improved upon daily, just like an athlete works on his craft. We all come from different walks of life and that is often a factor in the way our leadership styles are shaped. Our differences of race, gender, religion, home environment, and lifestyle all have an effect on the way we are led growing up. It is a skill that is mastered over time, while never being perfected. Like anything else in life, leadership skills are often developed from who we are, where we come from and the people in our life who have taught us their knowledge.
According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Being a leader is being a role model and striving to make a positive impact on those around you. In order to be a successful leader, you have to put yourself second and your peers first. For example, my younger sister and I both play softball. I have played on several travel teams during the summer and this year, she tried out for her first competitive travel team. I was asked to aid her by helping her with the mechanics of the game. During this time, I sacrificed my time to put the needs of another person before my own and it paid off, because she made the team and I got to witness the results of my
I found a passion for swimming at a young age and I've been in the sport for over a decade now. As I grew, I noticed I had a leg length discrepancy. This was due to the cancer treatment I recieved when I was 2 years old. As I grew older I saw only horror as my left leg not only grew longer in length , but also larger in circumference than my right , due to the radiation treatment. There were points on the journey where I wanted to quit as I underwent surgery after surgery. For a while I continued to swim , but I didn't care about it much until something changed , this school year ( junior year). I asked myself, "Is this what I want in life? To continue to be held back while watching others succeed?" From then on I started to overcome many
My leadership experience started at a young age with my parents. Not only did my parents set the right example through their actions, they encouraged me to take risks and always challenge myself. While they were tough and expected a great deal, I always knew they believed in me which gave me confidence and a healthy self-image. Through a positive parental relationship and example, I was able to learn essential leadership qualities and build a solid foundation for further development. Throughout my childhood and even through college, I played competitive team sports (basketball and softball).
For my final exam project in teen leadership class, the idea that pop up first in my head was volunteer at my church for the free truck. I was a member of the Vietnamese Youth. As a member of this group, we do many volunteering and activities. The one that I did for my final project is the latest activity that I’ve attended. It was on a sunny Saturday, me and my dad drive us to the church early and there wasn’t many people at that time. As I patiently waited for other people come, I helped the elders preparing the tables and chairs. After that, the truck come with full of foods. As the guys bring the foods down from the truck, we bring it to the table and put it in the bags. Unfortunately, there aren’t so many people coming to take it. We giving away as much as we can and bring home some of it. Since, many people didn’t come we have to throw away all the left over to the trash.
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and
A strong example of my leadership experience is my senior season of football. Following the 2016-2017 academic year, our head coach resigned on short notice and lacked any coach to fill the position. Because he left on such short notice, we didn’t have a coach for the first two weeks of the preseason, a crucial developing point in the season. However, a small group of other seniors and I were able to schedule workouts until we got a new coach. This established our group as team leaders and allowed us to lead the team to success in the regular season. I was later named a team captain for my leadership on and off the field. This gave me the ability further lead by example as well as keep the team’s morale up in the face of adversity. I ran extra
There have been many challenges that I have faced throughout my high school education. I had to work harder than most people to maintain my GPA and be ranked in my class with the rank I currently have. Most of my extracurriculars and sports take up a lot of my time where I do not get enough time to study, finish my homework, etcetera. I constantly have to work hard and make time for everything on my schedule despite how tired I am or how much I would like a break. Many of the extracurricular activities that I am involved in, I also hold leadership positions. This improves my leadership skills as I have to use them on a daily basis. I have had to face the challenge of competing with other people to receive the positions that I hold. However,
Leadership is defined as the position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned from personal experience. Being a captain of a football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader.
Growing up I always heard adults say high school will be the best years of your life and with less than twenty days left of high school, I can honestly say they are correct. I am so grateful for the opportunity to experience high school. I have taken advanced placement classes, CLEP exams, and every honors class possible. I am in four clubs and organizations and hold three leadership roles within those clubs. Unlike you commonly see in movies and shows, I genuinely loved high school and know I will have that same passion for college. I have gained so much knowledge, skills, and friends within four years of high school that will last a lifetime. I cherish every experience and relationship that I have made in my years of high school. Of course,
My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn’t think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. Some of the most valuable leaderships traits that I acquired and fortified are:
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human
